Subject: Lyr Add: THE NEW MAN WHO COMES AROUND (Terry Shand From: Jim Dixon Date: 24 Jun 19 - 06:53 PM You can hear this on the Internet Archive. THE NEW MAN WHO COMES AROUND (Bud Green; Tommy Tucker; John Lair) As recorded by Terry Shand and His Orchestra, 1940, on Decca 2997 A. CHORUS: There's a man who passes our house ev'ry single day, Plays his little song and then goes away. I asked the man his name and, queer as it may sound, He told me he was just the man who comes around. 1. The man who passes our house is quite a jitterbug. He comes to beat the carpet; he likes to cut a rug. He beats it on the line and he beats it on the floor. When Papa comes home, he beats it out the door. CHORUS 2. The man who passes our house repairs the Frigidaire. He hangs around the kitchen but Sister doesn't care. He stays all day but the time is never lost. If he didn't come around, Sister never would defrost. CHORUS 3. The man who passes my house is the bashful beau. Though he's a swing musician, his boiling point is low; But Sister says he's diff'rent when he takes her for a ride, For he's a sound sender on the Jersey side. CHORUS |

Subject: Lyr Add: WHEN MAMA GOES OUT THE MAID COMES IN From: Jim Dixon Date: 10 Mar 16 - 03:10 PM Heard this on the radio today. A similar story with the genders reversed. It's on an album called "Western Swing Heaven, Vol. 1" (2013). WHEN MAMA GOES OUT THE MAID COMES IN As recorded by the Bar X Cowboys, 1940. Mama goes out 'most ev'ry night; she's in society, And when Mama goes out, the maid comes in to keep us company. With no one there but Papa and me, we'd be lonesome, don't you see? So when Mama goes out, the maid comes in to keep us company. The maid's a little blue-eyed blonde, as cute as she can be. We always play some funny games and we sit on Papa's knee. She always helps him with his work; she's as nice as she can be, So when Mama goes out, the maid comes in to keep him company. Papa gets up 'most ev'ry time and turns the lights down low, For he always says they hurt his eyes and they have to be just so, But why they talk so soft and low is more than I can see, But when Mama goes out, the maid comes in to keep us company. Papa is awful good to me, and so is Nursie too. Nearly anything they ask of me they know that I will do, But why they put me off to bed I really cannot see, But when Mama goes out, the maid comes in to keep us company. |

Subject: Lyr Add:THE MAN DON'T COME TO OUR HOUSE ANYMORE From: GUEST,Mike in San Antonio Date: 03 Feb 12 - 10:34 AM Different versions of this one probably exist, but I transcribed these words directly from the old 78 [which you can hear at the Internet Archive]. Someone wrote "36" on the flip side, so it may have cost 36c when my mother bought it many years ago. THE MAN DON'T COME TO OUR HOUSE ANYMORE (Tucker/Somerville) As recorded by Tommy Tucker Time, with vocal chorus by Kerwin Somerville. Okeh 5717 (Matrix W 28039), 1940. CHORUS: Oh, the man don't come to our house anymore. He used to come around and knock upon the door. We still live where we always did before, But the man don't come to our house anymore. 1. The man that came to our house that used to bring the ice, He was the nicest ice man that ever brought our ice, But he came around so often when my papa wasn't there That Pop put out the "No Ice" sign and bought a Frigidaire! CHORUS 2. The man that came to our house to bring us eggs and butter, He couldn't talk so very good; he always had to stutter. It seemed a shame he had to go; I always wondered why. I guess because it took so long for him to say "Goodbye." CHORUS 3. The man that came to our house that used to bring the milk And walked right in the kitchen 'cause he talked as smooth as silk, He liked my mama very much and brought her a corsage, And now we've got a Jersey cow that lives in our garage. CHORUS 4. Now when I get big and get to go to school, I want to learn a few things so I won't be a fool, But before I learn my A-B-Cs or how much is a pound, I'm gonna ask the teacher why the man don't come around. CHORUS Easy, Lad; easy! TAG: I wonder why—wonder why—why the man don't come to our house anymore. [The same recording was also released on another label: Conqueror 9593.] |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: There's a Man that Comes to Our House From: GUEST,Clive Stone Auckland New Zealand Date: 19 Jan 11 - 01:49 AM My father was an anti-tank gunner stationed on Stirling Island in the Treasury Group in the war. There were Catalina PBY flying boats in Blanche Harbour between Mono and Stirling Islands. This is what he wrote in his diary: A ship is at anchor permanently as a tender for the flying boats, its name is the "Coos Bay". The flying boat tender has an amplifier or an electric gramophone (…a gramophone and amplifier on board) and it's pretty loud – we can hear the music from here and it's pretty good. (They thrash one song, "There's a man comes to our house every other day, Poppa isn't home, so the man comes to stay." How true in America these days.) SATURDAY 8TH. JANUARY 1944 |

Subject: Lyr Add: THE MAN WHO COMES AROUND (Will Osborne) From: Jim Dixon Date: 18 Jun 09 - 06:56 PM See the link given by GUEST,Dave above. [And there are additional copies here and here.] Here's my transcription THE MAN WHO COMES AROUND (Tucker; Lair; Green) As recorded by Will Osborne & His Slide Music, 1939, Varsity 8143. "Vocal by Dale, Barbara, Stinky, Will & Members of the Orchestra." 1. There's a man who comes to our house ev'ry single day. Pappy comes home and the man goes away. I asked the man his name and, queer as it may sound, He told me he was just the man who comes around. The man who comes around, the man who comes around, He told me he was just the man who comes around. 2. [CHILD'S VOICE] The man who comes to my house he comes to bring the milk. He walks right in the kitchen and talks as smooth as silk. I always have to hold his horsie out by the gate, 'Cause he always stays so long, the horsie hates to wait. CHORUS: There's a man who comes to our house ev'ry single day. Papa comes home and the man goes away. Papa does the work and Mama gets the pay. The man comes around when Papa goes away. 3. The man who comes to my house isn't such a dope. He rings the bell and says, "I hope, I hope, I hope." I know that he's a salesman by the way he steps inside. He never sells a single thing but walks out satisfied. CHORUS 4. [ELMER FUDD VOICE] Greetings ...(?) I'm never gonna be A carpenter or a plumber, no siree. I'll never be a doctor with an office downtown. I'm gonna be just the man who comes around. CHORUS 5. [POSH BRITISH VOICE] The chap who's coming to my house had better watch his footing For if he isn't careful, he's going to get a booting. He comes and goes so quickly, the neighbors all declare That he must be surely the little man who wasn't there. CHORUS 6. The man who comes to my house comes to fix the phone. He brings his tools with him but he always comes alone. And just before he leaves the house, I guess I ought to mention, He goes upstairs to Mammy's room and fixes her extension. CHORUS |

Subject: Popular song circa 1940 From: bfrey@mail.bbsnet.com Date: 27 Jul 97 - 05:00 PM A song I recollect (part of) from my childhood. Very popular for a short while. Surprised that it was on juke-boxes then, and that I was not chastised for singing it around the house. Probably nobody listened. Chorus: "There's a man who comes to our house every single day. Poppa come home and the man goes away. Oh, Poppa does the work and Momma gets the pay, And the man comes to our house every single day." It goes through the days of the week, with the man in a different guise each time. All I remember now is that on Wednesday he comes "in a little white jacket and a little black moustache" and that's when he come to "take away the trash". Pretty funny song. I'd like to know the rest of it. Bill Frey |
