The "Dennis Karjala" of the ballad is clearly a mythologization of the ASU Law Professor who maintains this website, and who submitted this testimony to the house in 1995.

The "wise man Peter Jaszi" appears to be based on the law professor who gave this testimony to the Senate in 1995

The "valiant maid Mary Brandt" would be based another law professor who set up the EXTENSION-L mailing list.

One suspects that the alligators are a fictional embellishment.

at an informal geekfest a few weeks ago, we downloaded an mp3 of this from RMS's website where he sings the song himself. The recording is very low quality, and the tune seems to be fairly open as well.

Here is the Music Relief Association which seems to want to narrow the public performance right from a right of public performance to its older form, a right of public performance for profit. (As I understand the history, the "for profit" qualification was dropped in the 1978 revision of the copyright law.)

Narrowing the public performance right has advantages and disadvantages. I wouldn't want to broaden it, but regardless of whether we narrow it or not, I think we need a thorough reforem of the music licensing system and (I never tire of stressing this) a shorter copyright term.

"I had a little agent, my agent pleased me" (to the tune of "I had a cat and the cat pleased me", which unfortunately I can't find in the DT) is another lyric which deals with copyright issues.
