This waltz by Oli Thorsteinson is named for the community of Gimli, Manitoba and I'd like to find the tune. Anyone familiar with it?? Thanks.

Oh, I'm disappointed. I thought it was Gimli the Dwarf's dance from Tolkein. I thought I might have been able to help!! Callie

My thought's exactly, Callie! Gimli was also a giant in Norse Mythology...

Really? Do tell! What did he do? And how did little Gimli be named after big Gimli?! Callie

He got ripped apart and the world was made out of him--so next time you see rocks, you'll know that's the Giant Gimli's mashed bones!

Thanks Mbo! I will remember the Norse giant respectfully on sighting rocks!

That doesn't explain Tolkein. Maybe he never heard of the giant and just got the name out of his brain - sort of a parallel-universe-but-centuries-later thing. Then again, maybe he was having a wee joke and laughing at we Norse-ignorant folks.

Callie

Tolkien, being the guy who was interested in the languages and lore of other folks, would probably have known exactly what he was doing when he named Gimli the Dwarf, a character who lives in and works closely with rocks, after a Norse Giant whose bones are the rocks that made the earth. However this still isn't getting us any closer to the original request. It sounds like it could be interesting. Is Gimli Manitoba a rocky sort of place?

But I found this neat site on the town of Gimli. Thay have music playing but I somehow suspect that it is not the Gimli Waltz.

Oh yes, Tolkien was VERY aware of Norse sagas, in fact he loved them! I.e. all the dwarves names in "The Hobbit" come from Snorri Sturluson's Elder Edda, except Balin! Tolkien was also up on Finnish mythology, but I won't go into that. BTW can you tell that I'm a diehard Tolkien scholar?

No - I never suspected. you've been very subtle about it. (Sarcasm stops here. Resume normal programming...)

Thanks for the info on Elder Edda. I'll look into it! How interesting! Callie

Perhaps someone had better write the Gimli Waltz. (It would have very small steps!) -Callie

I don't know if this will help, but there is a cassette available here, title and order number are--Johnny and His Musical Mates, The Gimli Waltz, CAT. #SSBCT-435 (cs)

I care, Meebee! :-)

Thanks, Sorcha, I'll check it out. I know someone who knows someone...who lives in Gimli. Remarkably far from nowhere, he said after visiting. But they have some sort of music festival, which I recommend attending only by cassette or CD - the skeeters in Manitoba are so bad it's like holding a bush party in the Everglades!

Sorcha, Did you find any prices or ordering info on that website you found? Maybe I didn't look far enough, but usually record folks are willing to put prices and "order here" all over the place. Meanwhile, I e-mailed them to ask about Gimli Waltz in particular, so with any luck we'll have some solid info from one source (you) or another (them).

CH.
