While the 'Cat was down today, I went net-surfing and found a great radio show called 'Folkal Point' on the Net from Belfast. Click here for the homepage for Downtown Radio. Here's the show description and times:

Folkal Point, SUNDAY - 10pm (Belfast time); 2200-2300 GMT; North America: 5-6 pm EST, 4-5 pm CST, 3-4 pm MT, 2-3 pm PT. Folkal Point has been running for over 20 years with an emphasis on traditional and contemporary Irish folk music; however, other ethnic music is covered such as Breton, Canadian and American. Irish and Scottish Gallic songs are included in most programmes. Over the years Maurice (Leyden) has interviewed musicans and singers live in the studio and also examines the lost folklore customs of Easter, Mayday, Halloween and Christmas.

haven't heard Downtown mentioned in years... when it first started it used to broadcast from Newtownards, ( a twon just outside Belfast).... they always played a nice mix of music.

A station I rarely listen to. More out of habit than anything else. My time is restricted. But I remember the night it first went on air. A lot of hype preceded it. After the first 5 minutes - blank, zilch, nada, rien, dadaí. It turned out that a minion had tripped on a stray cable and had pulled out a simple plug that supplied the station with power. Red faces all round !! Needless to say, they haven't loked back since. Interesting to point out that the electronics were designed and fitted by Peter Lloyd, a friend of Phil Coulter, Dan Farmer (Canada take note), Bernard Mc Laverty (Cal etc.), Joe Mc Williams (Artist), John Moulden (Who?), Sally Ogle (California take note), Henry O'Prey (Who ???) and other heads including Jimmy Deane, Séamas Heaney (Yes, the very same)etc. What a generation THAT was !! Unfortunately, Maurice Leyden's programme was axed. Tommy Sands "Country Ceili" which used to be broadcast on Sat, was moved to the Sun. night slot. I was listening last night and luckily heard Bobby Hanvey's "Travelling Man" programme at 11 pm. He rebroadcast a Dec 2006 interview with the late Tommy Makem. Much of the discussion was about the significance of crows!

Also mention of a Tommy Makem album of workers'/trade union songs whet my curiousity. I don't think I've heard any tracks from that recording.

I expect the programme will be archived on line for the rest of this week?
