SB's Protege,

Chords for which tune among several mentioned?

I have chords in a Word file for the Dempsey/Mitchell (1909) version via Mike Dowling. I've not had much luck with copy/paste on-line, but if this is the version that interests you, ship me an e-mail at merritt@itol.com and I'll send as attached file. I don't know any of the other Ace variants discussed above.

ACE IN THE HOLE
(Cole Porter)
(From the show "Let's Face It," 1941)

Sad times may follow your tracks.
Bad times may bar you from Sak's
At times, when Satan in slacks
Breaks down your self-control.

Maybe, as often it goes,
Your Abie may tire of his Rose;
So, baby, this rule I propose:
Always have an ace in the hole.

REPEAT

[This song has been recorded by Kenny Ball, Beryl Bryden, Barbara Carroll, Bobby Darin, The Dukes of Dixieland, Ella Fitzgerald, Sandy Graham, Hildegarde, Barbara Lea, Andrea Marcovicci, Johnny Mathis, Mabel Mercer, Cole Porter, Marcus Roberts, Bobby Short, Vestre Jazzvaerk, and Mary Jane Walsh.]

ACE IN THE HOLE
(Paul Simon)

Some people say Jesus that's the ace in the hole
But I never met the man so l don't really know
Maybe some Christmas if I'm sick and alone
He will look up my number
Call me on the phone and say
Hey, boy, where you been so long
Don't you know me
I'm your ace in the hole

Two hundred dollars, that's my ace in the hole
When I'm down, dirty and desperate
That's my emergency bankroll (I got . . .)
Two hundred dollars, that's the price on the street
If you wanna get some quality
That's the price you got to meet (and the man says...)
Hey, Junior, where you been so long
Don't you know me
I'm your ace in the hole
(Talk about ace in the hole)

Once I was crazy and my ace in the hole
Was that I knew that I was crazy
So I never lost my self-control
I just walk in the middle of the road
I sleep in the middle of the bed
I stop in the middle of a sentence
And the voice in the middle of my head said
Hey, Junior, where you been so long
Don't you know me
I'm your ace in the hole (oh yeah)
Ace in the hole
Lean on me
Don't you know me
I'm your guarantee

Riding on this rolling bus
Beneath a stormy sky
With a slow moon rising
And the smokestacks driving by

In the hour when the heart is weakest
And the memory is strong
When time has stopped
But the bus just rolls along
Roll on, roll on
Roll on, roll on
Roll on, roll on

Some people say music that's their ace in the hole
Just your ordinary rhythm and blues
Your basic rock and roll
You can sit on the top of the beat
You can lean on the side of the beat
You can hang from the bottom of the beat
But you got to admit that the music is sweet

Where you been so long
Don't you know me
I'm your ace in the hole (oh yeah)

Ace in the hole
Lean on me
Don't you know me
I'm your guarantee

Some people say music that's their ace in the hole
Just your ordinary rhythm and blues
Your basic rock and roll
You can sit on the top of the beat
You can lean on the side of the beat
You can hang from the bottom of the beat
But you gotta admit that the music is sweet

Hey, Junior, I'm your ace in the hole
Hey, Junior, I'm your ace in the hole
Hey, Junior, I'm your ace in the hole
Hey, Junior, I'm your ace in the hole

[Recorded by Paul Simon on "One Trick Pony."]

ACE IN THE HOLE
(Dennis Adkins)

CHORUS: You've got to have an ace in the hole,
A little secret that nobody knows.
Life is a gamble, a game we all play,
But you need to save something for a rainy day.
You've got to learn to play your cards right
If you expect to win in life.
Don't put it all on the line for just one roll.
You've got to have an ace in the hole.

If you're headed down a one-way street
And you're not sure it's the way you wanna go,
In money or love, or all the above,
Have a little more than what you show.
When life deals out a surprise
Have a few surprises of your own.
No matter what you do, no matter where you go,
You've got to have an ace in the hole. CHORUS

Don't put it all on the line for just one roll
You've got to have an ace in the hole.
No matter what you do, no matter where you go
You've got to have an ace in the hole.

[Recorded by George Strait.]

Actually there are several songs called "Ace in the Hole."

(That site has also provided a midi file: Click to play.)

ACE IN THE HOLE
(James Dempsey, George Mitchell, 1909)

This town is full of guys
Who think they're mighty wise,
Just because they know a thing or two.
You see them every day
Walkin' up and down Broadway,
Telling of the wonders they can do.
There's con men and there's boosters,
Card sharks and crap-shooters.
They congregate around the Metropole.
They wear fancy ties and laces,
But where do they get their aces?
They all have got an ace down in the hole!

CHORUS: Some of them write to the old folks for coin,
And that is their ace in the hole;
And others have friends on the old Tenderloin;
That's their old ace in the hole.

BRIDGE: They'll tell you of trips that they're going to take
From Florida to the North Pole.
The fact is, their name would be mud,
Like a chump playing stud,
If they lost that old ace down in the hole!

REPEAT BRIDGE

Listening to 2 different Beryl Bryden versions of Ace in the hole I noticed one was attributed to Cole Porter from the 1941 show Let's Face it and the other to "Trad-Dave Stewart".
Her version of the Boy from New Orleans, which she was "given" by Louis Armstrong and adapted slightly after he died, is also given different attribution on 2 different cuts: to "Trad,-Beryl Bryden" and to "Roberts/Katz/Thiele!" (the tune is "the Saints"). Just an example of the Copyright minefield that other threads have touched on.
I don't really need to know which is right!
