Thought I'd exchange one desert for another and try the Tundra-like thrills of Vermont. Are there any folk song circles happening between about 21 and 25 Feb close to slopes of Killington or Burlington? Do sea shanties and snow mix?

There's a small group that has an open sing-around at the Episcolopian Church in Rutland on 1st and 3rd Wednesday nights, which should mean there'll be one the 23rd. I will miss it as I will be visiting my baby girl amongst the Latter-Day Saints - and maybe hitting Alta once or twice - that week, but can give you more specific info if you need.

Hi Brian, I am about to embark on a new session tomorrow, and will let you know how it turns out. (I suspect it's a good one) It'd be here in Montpelier, kinda midway between Burlington and Killington, and the food is good and free.

Some friends and I were planning to go to an open mic on Thursday of that night, also in Montpelier, but as the Sables and I discovered, they are a bit heavy on the singer/songwriters. We could either instigate a takeover, or just do an impromptu session here. Let me know what's up.

We gather every Thursday eve at about 6 to 10 PM in S. Royalton, at Randy Leavitt's Freight House woodworking shop. Singing has been getting displaced lately by a surplus of fiddlers (and pipers, banjos, etc.), but its always a gas.

Yeah, I just got in from the monthly Forestdale jam which was over-banjoed, largely by shapely wimmen from your neck of the woods. Lea Kacha...Katchty...Catch A...oh, the hell with it..and Gail, whose last name eludes me....Ye gawds, what a racket. Good, though....

Buy Jeesum, I just went to that session up here, and it was all tunes. As I'mone of those fiddlers, it was fine for me, but I still want some singing. P'raps I'll instigate something. I've been accused of that now and then. How far would you folks travel for a weekend sing?

Peter, I guess I'm one of them wimmin that makes a racket, but as to shapely?? hmmm.

Shapely is as shapely does. And there's nothing wrong with wimmen making a racket. The mother of my children, who is also one of my music partners, does...but on vocals and phiddle, not the (shudder) b*nj*.

So you're in the Montpelier area. I never go there while the legislature is in session if I can possibly avoid it. You know the old quote about no one's life, liberty, or property being safe....

Maybe we need a central location. We could descend on the South Royalton session and announce: "Hi! We're glad you invited us and now we're going to sing!

Not the 24th. I will be among the Saints. (If the plane flight goes well, I'll be in Salt Lake City, visiting my little girl [who is pushing 30 and is a physician, but is still my little girl. Any other questions?]. If it goes exceeding badly, I'll be in the next life. The advantage of having it go well is that I can be among the Saints even though I'm a sinner. But I digress.)

We should try something like that in March, however.

I can play many of the tunes I listed pretty well, although my stamina isn't of that ilk (I don't think. Maybe I should go back and try to play what I wrote) I haven't been playing much, but did just start attending a session where I'm hoping to get the tunes back under my bow again. I prefer singing to fiddling by a bit, but if fiddling is what I find, that's what I do.

The legislature will go home, making Montpelier safe territory at some point in April/May. I don't drive, so it does complicate matters now and then.

Midchuck, I do have to ad the caviat that I may well have to be started on the tunes by someone who actually sorts out which tunes go with which names. I have a horrible time with that. I do know what goes with Fishers, Wind that shakes the Barley, Soldier's Joy, Swingin' on a Gate, Billy in the Low Ground, Smash the Windows, St. Anne's Reel, Gaspe Reel, Whiskey before Breakfast, Kitchen Girl (of course) Arkansas Traveller, Haste to the Wedding, Opera Reel, Boys of Blue Hill, the Scholar, Flowers of edinburgh, and a few others. I know Rakes of Mallow, Coleraine, Rockberg Castle, Morpeth Rant, Harvest Home, Cherish the Ladies, and a host of other tunes to which Idon't even know the names, let alone which names go with which tunes. I learn them by ear, and then something happens to the names. My fingers still know 'em but my brain, well that's another matter.

While you are in Vermont, stop by Middlebury College and visit the Helen Hartness Flanders Ballad Collection. This is one of our treasures. Look it up on the web.

Just wanted to say a public "Thank You" for the hosts of the sings in Vermont. Although the Episcopal Church parish office gave me odd looks, I did find a locale in Rutland: The Creative Art Space runs a sing called Open Voices (ok nobody showed up except the owner but we did make pottery). The voices were a match for the fiddlers at the Freight House in South Royalton, and landlubbers got a pretty full menu of sea shanties at Montpelier. Overall a pretty good way of spending the evenings when off the slopes!

I'd love to know about a local venue for traditional music, which probably isn't commercially viable. Susan's right in that what seems to attract interest isn't the old stuff we love dearly.

Joan, just had an interesting conversation with a couple of folks at the Tony Cuffe concert (Live Art does do a decent mix, it's the open mike stuff that gets, well, uninteresting) about the possibility of starting some sort of singing session at Fiddleheads/now Julio's W'll begin plotting with Jane E. (who has expressed an interest) at the Irish session on Saturday. Wanna come??

Greatly enjoyed singing with Wotcha last Friday. He braved some threatening weather conditions to come up here and sing, and sing we did. I just picked up a book out at The Country Bookshop which has Away Rio in it. For the next shanty sing.

(Susan who is rambling after too much caffien, which she does only on evenings when she heads for Live Art concerts, cause it keeps her awake when out on a week night. buzzz buzzz)

Interesting news, Susan. Saturdays have become a bit iffy for me, since I'm now working part time at the previously mentioned Country Bookshop--sometimes can leave in early afternoon though. I guess you know Ben's specialty is folklore and folksong books; he has scholarly collections and not-so-scholarly collections that are difficult to find. Joan
