Subject: Sonata Banjo; what do you know?

I have borrowed a banjo from a friend, while I determine whether or not, when and what kind of banjo to buy. I joined a Celtic band for a series of dates, and am playing banjo on a large portion of their tunes. The banjo is a blue grass style model made by Sonata. I know nothing about the company, but have been impressed with the instrument; it has a great sound, good neck (though the action needs a bit of work), good tuners.

Has anyone any experience with this banjo? And any comments on the manufacturer?

By the way, I still presume I will purchase an open back, maybe even long neck banjo. I presumed long neck because these guys like to sing in B, Bflat, F ... but I must say I have had much trouble with those keys yet ... but maybe I'm just too ignornant to know better!

Have you asked the Elderly people what they know?

Are you having fun with it?

At least you will be able to joke when asked what you are playing,

"This is SO not a banjo."

Or if you are Italian,

"This izza da son o' da banjo."

I have recently bought a sonata tenor banjo from eBay, I was the only bidder and although it has some damage it sounds really good and looks great, but like everyone else, I can’t find any info about it
