Subject: Lyr Add: BAIDIN FHEIDHLIMI
From: GUEST,Anna
Date: 12 Feb 00 - 08:33 AM

Baidin Fheidhlimi d'imigh go Gola
Baidin Fheidhlimi's feidhlimi ann.
Baidin Fheidhlimi d'imigh go Gola
Baidin Fheidhlimi's feidhlimi ann
Baidin Bideach Baidin Beosach
Baidin Boideach Baidin Fheidhlimi
Baidin Bideach Baidin Beosach
Baidin Fheidhlimi feidhlimi ann.

Baidin Fheidhlimi d'imig go Torai
Baidin Fheidhlimi's feidhlimi ann.

Baidin Fheidhlimi briseadh i dTorai
Baidin Fheidhlimi's feidhlimi ann.

Can somebody translate it?
Is Torai Tory Island, off the cost of Donigal?
(Nice and strange place, really)

HTML line breaks added. --JoeClone, 29-Mar-02.

You can also find the Irish lyrics here. As for the translation:

Feidhlim's little boat went to Gola,
Feidhlim's little boat and Feidhlim in it,
Feidhlim's little boat went to Gola,
Feidhlim's little boat and Feidhlim in it

A tiny little boat, a lively little boat,
A foolish little boat, Feidhlim's little boat,
A straight little boat, a willing little boat,
Feidhlim's little boat and Feidhlim in it.

Feidhlim's little boat went to Tory,
Feidhlim's little boat and Feidhlim in it,
Feidhlim's little boat went to Tory,
Feidhlim's little boat and Feidhlim in it.

A tiny little boat, a lively little boat,
A foolish little boat, Feidhlim's little boat,
A straight little boat, a willing little boat,
Feidhlim's little boat and Feidhlim in it.

Feidhlim's little boat crashed on Tory,
Feidhlim's little boat and Feidhlim in it,
Feidhlim's little boat crashed on Tory,
Feidhlim's little boat and Feidhlim in it,

A tiny little boat, a lively little boat,
A foolish little boat, Feidhlim's little boat,
A straight little boat, a willing little boat,
Feidhlim's little boat and Feidhlim in it.

Thanks Aine. Now I know that Torai and Tory are the same island. I went there five years ago, but I could stay there only an afternoon, so unfortunately, no music for me. Anna

Dear Séimí Beag,

I translated bóidheach as 'silly' because that was the word that was given to me by my Irish teacher, who was from Donegal. There is no word 'bóidheach' in any modern Irish dictionary that I've seen. However, there is the word 'boidheach' in Scots Gaelic that does mean 'pretty'; but, there is no fada on the 'o'. It could very well that 'bóidheach' is the same word as 'boidheach'. My teacher, who had a masters degree in the Irish language, researched the word and 'silly' or 'foolish' was the translation that she settled on.

Le meas, Áine

I'm afraid your Irish teacher is going to have to buy a new dictionary. See "Foclóir Gaeilge-Béarla" by Dinneen, page 101. In many respects this dictionary has more to offer than Ó Dónaill's. You speak of your teacher in the past tense. I hope that she is still with us. Séimí Beag

Seimi Beag, when I was taught the song boidheach was lively, a lively wee boat tossing on the waves.

Hi, Ken, welcome to Mudcat. You will be more likely to find what you are seeking if you first try the 'search' button at the top of the page. If that does not locate what you need, try individual threads for each title, using the request and song title in the thread title, as in,
TABS REQ: Michael *(Johnny McEvoy)

It is not in all of the smaller dictionaries but is in Dineen as beautiful or pretty. Remember that Gola and Tory are in the Gaoth Dobhair and Cnoc Fola area and the Irish spoken there is Ulster Irish which is a bit closer to Scots Gaelic than Munster or Connaught Irish. A couple of native speakers from the Teileann - Gleann Cholm Cille area have told me that the Irish in Tory can be tough even for them as native Ulster speakers.

Also, givin that all of the other adjectives describing the little boat are positive a more positive translation makes sense. Besides, for foolish or silly Donegal speakers would likely use "amaideach".

Your spelling of my grandfather's and my own name is incorrect - correct spelling and pronunciation is given above!!

My grandfather died in his bed at the age of 93.   He lived in Rann na Feirste in North West Donegal. The ruins of his house are still there to be seen.   I have a son Felimy living in Singapore and he sent me this site.

The best rendition of the song is probably by the Emmet Spiceland with Donal Lunny. It's the only version of the song which uses the correct pronunciation of my name!!

Feidhlimidh O'Grianna
