So am I the only one here that well and truely hates Real Audio? I've never messed with the Real Producer, but every Read Audio thing I've ever heard on the net sounds like it was recorded in a empty bathroom in an asylum...
Maybe I am an audiophile... Won't mom be proud!
LOL!!

WOW! Thanks, Joe and Jon! That is, so far, a wonderful program. Just converted my wav into a nicely sized file and sent it to Max and a few family members. Sheesh! I feel so high tech for real now!

Kat, I can not advise on what is better. All I can say is I opted for the version 7 beta. It is early days for me and this product but my instinct tells me it is good.

Thank you very much!

Kat, try the Real Producer that Joe Offer provided a link to. One of the things it is capable of doing is reading a .wav file and producing both .rm files and .mp3 files. When I tried, I had a 20mb .wav file reduced to 2mb in .rm format. I think the mp3 conversion came out around 500k

How do I compress a wav file? I just figured out how to record voice into the computer using the Windows program and the quality is really great, but, as Jon said, the file came out HUGE for the amount of material.

Joplinfan: you could also use MediaRing. If you do a SuperForum search of all the threads with HearMe; MediaRing; or, ICQ, you will find info with links on each of those programs, which will make it easy for you and your friend to exchange tunes.

The quickest and easiest way would be for you both to go to the latest HearME thread, the one which has 2/13 in the title, both of you click on the link in there, during a pre-arranged time, and then you just hold down your F9 key and talk or sing. That particular link is one we use for Mudcat Virtual Song Circles. If you can and would like to join us for the next one, this comng Sunday at 7pmEST.

If you have any trouble, holler.

Exactly "of the programmers" - it's as if you had to learn to drive from a book written by the people who build the cars, or learn to play an instrument from an instrument maker.

McGrath - a comprehensible manual is against the code of the programmers. Besides, it's cheating if you read one.

I agree, the so-called instructions usually are useless. 90% of my job is learning to decode the instructions and figure out which ones are wrong.

As I said, the only place you can get any sense about this kind of thing is here, so far as I can see.

I've tried recording songs singing into a mike plugged into the computer - but I find it really off putting, what with the screen looking at me and the little lights flashing and the graph display jumping up and down.

So what I'm thinking of doing now is recording via a mike into a tape recorder, probably the mini one I take down the pub for sessions sometimes, because that's a bit less intimidating - and then playing that into the computer through a wire plugged into the line-in socket or the microphone socket, and turning it into some kind of music file, and shrinking it to some useable size. (Which then, if I can make the Real Audio work, would mean when I put a song up on my website, I could put up a verse or so of the tune as well.)

But I wish I could find some patient, detailed, but comprehensible, written guide to all this stuff, geared to my level of understanding, which technologically is not high...

OK, I'm not quite sure what you are running but I will assume it is a PC running Windows and that it is fitted with a soundcard.

To make the type of recording that you are taking about, you will need a microphone to connect to plug into the Mike socket of your PC. I only use a cheap one but it works well enough for me. Other recording operations can be carried out using your computers CD player and possibly even your hi-fi (I have my hi-fi headphones socket connected to my soundcards line in and this enables me to record from lp's can cassettes).

As regards software. Windows comes with a program called sound recorder which will do the job but the resulting .wav files are quite large. I have only just started to use it but perhaps Real Producer that Joe Offer provided a link to would prove to be useful as it is free and it is capable of producing much smaller files that still sound good.

With regards to humming a tune, I have done that on a few occasions lately but mostly as the result of live chat. ICQ (http://www.icq.com) has the ability to send 15 seconds of sound which has proved useful in identifying a song or a tune during the course of a conversation. I have also used Hearme for similar purposes but mainly to play a clip from a recording.

Seems like this thread I began a few days ago really started something. But, as an aging non-technophile, exactly WHAT must I do to send and receive music via the Net. Much of what you technophiles are saying is way over my head.

How does one get the sound into the computer in the first place? Microphone, what kind? How? What programmes would sender/receiver need.

If my friend in Florida wants to send me a (hummed) melody to a song, and I want to send one back, what do we need to have/do?

Dont forget, I'm aging , and not too swift. E-mail me direct if you prefer.

Thanks again, all.

Reading this with interest but to change the subject slightly.

I have trouble receiving the Mudcat Radio RA stuff, both the live and the recorded stuff. I don't have too much trouble with other RA sites, is is just me? Can anyone suggest any tweaks and adjustments, I could try?

Thanks folks! Me mind is reeling trying to make sense of it. I'm gettingnthe odd glimmerinmg of understanding. Maybe in the morning I might be able to make more sense.

So far I've always found that, when you actually get round to working out how something is done, it's normally pretty easy. Much easier than playing a musical instrument. But the manuals get written by people who seem to have different shaped brains.

And that applies just as much to all these series of boopks with titles like "Computers for really stupid people like you". Jokes and cartoons and pseudo hippy chit chat to soften you up - and then, wham, they hit you with a lump of undigested technology. About the only people I can understand when it comes to conmputers are on the Mudcat.

Mostly I just put the manual on one side, and fiddle away until something goes right.Like putting flkat-pack furniture tiogether, chuck away the instructions once you've checked that all the bits are there, and try to think like Robinson Crusoe.

Joe, I am using the one that your link took me to which is Vesrion 7 beta. In the middle of the main window, there is a combo box labeled "Output Type". This can be changed from "RealMedia" to "MP3 audio". I have converted a couple of wav files using this option and they seem to play OK.

Well, my first try at free RealProducer was last August. I uninstalled when it didn't work. Now that I've just downloaded the current version of free RealProducer, I see that I was using the Publish Wizard, I did everything according to the rules before, so hopefully this version will work where the last one failed.

I have also used Vocaltec to send sound files, posted the info at Mudcat, but not too many people seem to be interested in doing it that way.

Joe - I just qoute 'em. I DO know that one of the problems McGrath had was that when someone tried his links, RealAudio would try to find the file on their local drive, even though his links read for the network drive. Did a search in the Realaudio database for that problem and those were the two answers. the references evidently are built into the files themselves, not just the HTML code. Have seen several other references to this, but can't locate the blasted things.

With all due respect, MMario, and with no offense intended, etc., etc.... what you quoted borders on being mind numbing, but now I get it.

If you produce your web pages offline with a web page editor, what you said applies. If you're one of those raw, primitive types like me who does HTML editing online, it doesn't apply. I upload my RealAudio files to the great webpage provider in the sky, and then edit my pages online and provide links as needed. In that case, the fancy doodads don't apply.

Now that I have an adequate computer, maybe I'll try the fancy doodads. If BillD can do fancy stuff now, so can I....

Jon, what version of RealProducer are you using? The free one? I haven't found the MP3 capability yet, but I'm off to look for it. Where do I look?

I KNEW i'd seen something regarding this before, but couldn't find it until now.... from the knowledgebase at realaudio:

"RealProducer G2 uses local file references to produce the initial preview page. The localreferences are automatically updated to the correct server references when RealProducer's Publish Wizard uploads the .ram/.rpm file to a remote Web server. If you are a content creator using RealProducer and the links on your Web page give an invalid URL message, then you need to re-upload the files. When you upload the files, be sure you are using the Publish Wizard to transfer the files to the servers."

AND

"The uploading of RealProducer files must be done using RealProducer's Publish Wizard. RealProducer uses local file references to produce the initial preview page. The local references are automatically updated to the correct server references when RealProducer's Publish Wizard uploads the .ram/.rpm file to a remote Web server. If FrontPage or another HTML editor is used to upload the files, the references will not be updated and the links will be invalid."

Nice Website, McGrath. You're right, though - I can't get the RealAudios to play.
Try this with RealProducer:
Go to Options, then Preferences.
In the box that appears, make sure you're on the "general" tab, and then check the first two boxes to allow recording and download (checking the third boy is a good idea - may protect you from copyright cops).
Click "OK," and I think that should do it for you.
Click here to get to my Website, and see if my audios work for you.
On many of the "free" Websites, you can't give people just a link to a particular file to play or download. You have to send them to an html page on your site, and have the links to sound and other files there. I think that's to force people to actually go to your site so your site provider can then expose them to advertising.

The free Real Producer did the same to me, also, McGrath. Are you by any chance using a Mac? I am. I could sometimes get it to attach a sound file to email, but when I would add it to a web page, it would not play. The files would be in my ISP folder along with everything else for my website, the link would be fine, but no go. I concluded that I would have to buy the application instead of using the free version... haven't done that yet.

What I want to be able to do is stick blue clickys on my own website next to songs, so that people can get the tunes via RealAudio, tunes which I've loaded on my webspace via Real Producer in some reasonably compressed form or whatever.

But when I tried that, I got some complication going so that it would only read the tunes from my hard disc. So when I tried it on my own PC it seemed to work fine - but it wouldn't work from any other computer, which defeated the purpose of the operation. So I put it on the back burner for the time being, until I could find someone or somewhere that I could get a guide to how to do all this in the kind of language I understand. Any advice ormpointers would be appreciated.

But that "Mydocsonline" that Clinton suggests might be another way of achieving much the same object. I'll try it out.

Joe, Thanks for the link for Real Producer. I have just installed it and have had a quick play and I am quite impressed with it. I have converted 2 .wav files and the resulting .rm files are roughly 10% of the size but sound good.

I don't know about the recorders but I have tried several free mp3 encoders and the results have been very variable and I have yet to find one that I would reccommend.

They've made it a bit difficult to find the free "basic" version, but RealProducer (Click here to get there the easy way) works quite well for recording things you want to e-mail or post at a Website. The sound quality is quite good and the file size is reasonable, less than half a megabyte for three or four minutes of sound. I haven't found a free MP3 recorder that totally satisfies me yet.
For MIDIs, I use Noteworthy Composer. It's a shareware program that costs $40 to register, but the unregistered version served me pretty well for a number of years - but I'm sure glad I finally registered.

A lot depends on what you are looking to send/ recieve. If you are looking at digital recordings, consider using one of the compressed formats like MP3 or Real Audio as the files are a lot smaller than say .wav files.

If you are looking to exchange notation, ABC is probably the most efficient method and cheap/ free ABC software is readily availble.

I also use MIDI as I tend to use MIDI software for editing and arranging. Part of the ABC vs MIDI issue depends again on the purpose. MIDI is better for more complicated synth arrangements wheras ABC is better for producing straight notation.

I perfer to avoid sending music as grapic files but will do if the person I am sending to can not use any of the alternatives. As with T, .giff is my preffered graphic format.

Another consideration is who/ where you are sending and I use several methods. If I am sending to 1 person, I will use email or amongst my ICQ list, will often send by file transfer while chatting.

If I am positing a melody to a news group, I normally use the text only ABC format but in most other circumstances, I place the file(s) on my web space and simply supply a link.

With Mudcat, the is also a program called Mid2Txt which allows you to post a Midi and an ABC in a format suitable for this forum. The resulting text can then be converted back to MIDI using Txt2Mid.

A better idea than emailing them is to sign up for a free account at MyDocsOnline.Com... then upload yer file... and when someone wants it you email them an invitation to download it... nice simeple.. and it cut's down on hassle of re-emailing files over and over again...

I send them out as .aiff files which an be played by Quicktime's player and many others. For small files Eudora has a little plugin called Purevoice which allows one to attach a spoken or sung audio within the email.

For larger files you might need to attach them after compressing them using Stuffit or Zip utilities.

I usually send music as

a) MIDI files (Musical Instrument Digital Interface)

b) ABC files

c) .gif files.
