Subject: RE: mother-in-law From: Little Neophyte Date: 13 Feb 00 - 10:26 PM Mysterious doctor X, I don't know the lyrics, but I think once they are posted here, they might be a good candidate to be posted in the current thread Help: Songs That Make Us Happy. Little Neo |
Subject: RE: mother-in-law From: paddymac Date: 13 Feb 00 - 11:25 PM Little Neo of the razor wit. I certainly couldn't argue against you, but surely there must be a person who truly did like their mother-in-law. |
Subject: RE: mother-in-law From: Little Neophyte Date: 13 Feb 00 - 11:30 PM You know what paddymac, I loved my mother-in-law. The problem was my boyfriend Lenny and I made a big mistake. We had lived together for 7 years, got married on the 8th year and within 9 months we were divorced. I loved my mother-in-law; she was the best. I think Lenny and I should have just kept on living together. Little Neo |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: mother-in-law From: PoppaGator Date: 22 Sep 04 - 11:16 AM To The Villan (and others): Ernie K-Doe, "Emporer of the World," passed away on July 5, 2001; his "jazz funeral" was, without a doubt, the largest in the history of New Orleans, with thousands of mourners parading in the streets. K-Doe recorded many truly excellent sides which sold well in the immediate area of New Orleans and in the all-black "race records"/"chitlin circuit" market, but to most of the rest of the world, he is known only for his one big novelty-song hit, "Mother-in-Law." He was an outrageous performer, pretty much in the style of Joe Tex (his own favorite) and James Brown, noted for his elaborate costumes and his *huge* ego. I could go on and on, but the easiest thing for me to do would be to provide this link to his website: http://www.k-doe.com/ (Check out the "Image Galleries" for photos of the funeral.) |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: mother-in-law From: PoppaGator Date: 22 Sep 04 - 11:26 AM Jim Dixon, Near the bottom of your second list of "Mother-in-Law" recordings appears this one: Mother-in-Law/Lipstick Traces - 1 recording These two tunes are closely associated, but were not originally the two sides of a single record. 1) The "Mother-in-Law" on this particular recording has to be K-Doe's, for reasons that will be apparent momentarily. 2) Benny Spellman was the bass vocalist whose repeated intonations of the title phrase are such an important feature of K-Doe's "Mother-in-Law." In fact, after the record had become such a huge international hit, Spellman felt he was unfairly excluded from profiting from it, since his contribution was (arguably) the key to the song's wide appeal. In response to these complaints, Allen Toussaint wrote and arranged "Lipstick Traces" for Benny Spellman. It's a great record and Benny's single greatest success, but remains unknown to most of the world outside New Orleans -- not nearly as successful as "Mother-in-Law." To sum up, "Lipstick Traces" was a sort of follow-up to "Mother-in-Law," albeit recorded by and credited to a different (lead) singer. The two songs, obviously, were originally released separately, several months apart, but some enterprising soul seems to have packaged the two in a single recording. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: mother-in-law From: GUEST,# Date: 23 Mar 15 - 05:59 PM "Allen Toussaint wrote and arranged "Lipstick Traces" for Benny Spellman." It's interesting to note that ' "Lipstick Traces (on a Cigarette)" is a song first recorded by New Orleans singer Benny Spellman in 1962. It was written by Allen Toussaint under the pseudonym Naomi Neville.' |
