Mysterious doctor X, I don't know the lyrics, but I think once they are posted here, they might be a good candidate to be posted in the current thread Help: Songs That Make Us Happy.

Little Neo of the razor wit. I certainly couldn't argue against you, but surely there must be a person who truly did like their mother-in-law.

You know what paddymac, I loved my mother-in-law.
The problem was my boyfriend Lenny and I made a big mistake. We had lived together for 7 years, got married on the 8th year and within 9 months we were divorced.
I loved my mother-in-law; she was the best.
I think Lenny and I should have just kept on living together.

Yeah, heck, my mother-in-law was great. A brilliant woman, with a heart of gold. She kept me as her son-in-law, even after I got divorced.

allmusic lists an amazing number of songs/recordings with "mother-in-law" in the title. (American practice is to spell it with hyphens. Am I right in guessing that British spelling leaves them out?) It might be interesting to see how many songs we can get lyrics to:

Mother-in-Law - 116 recordings
Mother-in-Law Blues - 50 recordings
Boogie Woogie's Mother-in-Law - 8 recordings
I'm Gonna Marry My Mother-in-Law - 3 recordings
Day at the Mother-in-Law's - 2 recordings
Evil Mother-in-Law - 2 recordings
Gonna Marry My Mother-in-Law - 2 recordings
Mi Suegra (My Mother-in-Law) - 2 recordings

Subject: Lyr Add: MOTHER-IN-LAW (Ernie K. Doe)
From: PoppaGator
Date: 21 Sep 04 - 01:04 PM

Then there's the 1960 pop hit written and recorded by my mentor and idol, the late great Ernie K-Doe, featuring piano by producer/arranger Allen Toussaint and bass vocal by Benny Spellman:

MOTHER-IN-LAW
Ernie K-Doe

Mother-in-law, mother-in-law
Mother-in-law, mother-in-law

The worst person I know
Mother-in-law, mother-in-law
She worries me so
Mother-in-law, mother-in-law
If she'd leave us alone
We would have a happy home
Sent from down below

Mother-in-law, mother-in-law
Mother-in-law, mother-in-law

Sin should be her name
Mother-in-law, mother-in-law
To me they are about the same
Mother-in-law, mother-in-law
Everytime I open my mouth
Then she tries to put me out
How could she stoop so low

Mother-in-law, mother-in-law
Mother-in-law, mother-in-law

I come home with my pay
Mother-in-law, mother-in-law
She ask me what I made
Mother-in-law, mother-in-law
She thinks her advice is a constitution
But if she would leave that would be the solution
And don't come back no more
My mother-in-law, mother-in-law.....

I wonder how many different songs are represented among the 116 recordings of this title?

To The Villan (and others):

Ernie K-Doe, "Emporer of the World," passed away on July 5, 2001; his "jazz funeral" was, without a doubt, the largest in the history of New Orleans, with thousands of mourners parading in the streets.

K-Doe recorded many truly excellent sides which sold well in the immediate area of New Orleans and in the all-black "race records"/"chitlin circuit" market, but to most of the rest of the world, he is known only for his one big novelty-song hit, "Mother-in-Law." He was an outrageous performer, pretty much in the style of Joe Tex (his own favorite) and James Brown, noted for his elaborate costumes and his *huge* ego.

I could go on and on, but the easiest thing for me to do would be to provide this link to his website:

http://www.k-doe.com/

(Check out the "Image Galleries" for photos of the funeral.)

Jim Dixon,

Near the bottom of your second list of "Mother-in-Law" recordings appears this one:

Mother-in-Law/Lipstick Traces - 1 recording

These two tunes are closely associated, but were not originally the two sides of a single record.

1) The "Mother-in-Law" on this particular recording has to be K-Doe's, for reasons that will be apparent momentarily.

2) Benny Spellman was the bass vocalist whose repeated intonations of the title phrase are such an important feature of K-Doe's "Mother-in-Law." In fact, after the record had become such a huge international hit, Spellman felt he was unfairly excluded from profiting from it, since his contribution was (arguably) the key to the song's wide appeal. In response to these complaints, Allen Toussaint wrote and arranged "Lipstick Traces" for Benny Spellman. It's a great record and Benny's single greatest success, but remains unknown to most of the world outside New Orleans -- not nearly as successful as "Mother-in-Law."

To sum up, "Lipstick Traces" was a sort of follow-up to "Mother-in-Law," albeit recorded by and credited to a different (lead) singer. The two songs, obviously, were originally released separately, several months apart, but some enterprising soul seems to have packaged the two in a single recording.

"Allen Toussaint wrote and arranged "Lipstick Traces" for Benny Spellman."

It's interesting to note that ' "Lipstick Traces (on a Cigarette)" is a song first recorded by New Orleans singer Benny Spellman in 1962. It was written by Allen Toussaint under the pseudonym Naomi Neville.'
