I just thought I'd tell any British old time Appalachian fans about a few music opportunities in the UK. This weekend is the Gainsborough old time festival run by Friends Of American Old Time Music And Dance (FOAOTMAD), a fine club to which I belong. The Konnarock Critters, Bob Carlin, The New Deal String Band (Tom & Ben Paley & Joe Locker), The Rough Deal String Band (Dublin)and lots of other good people will perform and hold workshops (fiddle, guitar, banjo). Most of the audience bring instruments and have sessions all over the place all weekend. See the FOAOTMAD web page for details. http://freespace.virgin.net/zam.max/foaotmad/

The spring bank holiday brings a great FOAOTMAD old time camp at Sacrewell Farm, near Peterborough, where you can camp for a ludicrously low price (£1-50 a day last year!) and play music for three days - we had 40 or so people last year, and some really good sessions. We also have a week's camp in August and we will have Dwight Diller and Dave Bing from West Virginia doing 4-day banjo and fiddle workshops next winter. There are some keen old timers in the UK! Cheers Ray

When I moved away from Chicago, I left all folk music behind, I thought. I was absolutely bereft. Now I am here at the 'Cat and I find my favorite Chicago folk radio show online too.

Your post reminded me how much people need to connect with the music of their heart, and although I am not in the UK, thanks for helping people find what they need!
