Subject: HELP: Looking for Guitar Strings From: JenEllen Date: 15 Feb 00 - 06:14 PM Looking for a place/site to find Acoustic Country Gold guitar strings. I believe the manufacturer was Kenworth, but not sure. They are UK origin, and very tough to come by in the states normally, now they are impossible to find. I have been led to believe that they are no longer available and would like confirmation that there are indeed no Medium Gauge(ends not raveled)acoustics out there...Thanks, playing with crappy strings until then...Elle |
Subject: RE: HELP: Looking for Guitar Strings From: bill\sables Date: 15 Feb 00 - 06:32 PM Hi Jen Ellen I am in the UK and been playing for forty years and have never heard of the strings you mention However I will ask around and if I find them I will let you know |
Subject: RE: HELP: Looking for Guitar Strings From: catspaw49 Date: 15 Feb 00 - 06:56 PM Hey Elle.......I'm with Bill. I've never heard of them and Kenworth would have stuck in my mind since they make trucks!! Outside if hyping things, the only "Acoustic Gold" I recall is a Pick-up that's very tough to install, but works fair on classical guitars. Do you still have a package or something maybe? Any other info? Sorry. Spaw |
Subject: RE: HELP: Looking for Guitar Strings From: Mbo Date: 15 Feb 00 - 07:54 PM Elle, I've never heard of those strings before--but if you want a little secret about THE best guitar strings in the world.... --Mbo |
Subject: RE: HELP: Looking for Guitar Strings From: JenEllen Date: 15 Feb 00 - 08:24 PM Okay...I got strung up at a festival by someone who said they were the best he'd ever seen (minds OUT of the gutter). He was right, and I've sent to find out more information. Ta..Elle And Mbo..if you even mention gore-tex..... |
Subject: RE: HELP: Looking for Guitar Strings From: Mbo Date: 15 Feb 00 - 09:27 PM Hey, I think my Dad had some USMC boots made with Gore-Tex, whatever it is! No, the best strings in the world are Martin Silk & Steel--around here they're real cheap because they're not in demand. But my world-class guitar teacher LOVED them, and so do I. Mmm...mmm...like butta! --Mbo |
Subject: RE: HELP: Looking for Guitar Strings From: uncle bill Date: 15 Feb 00 - 10:54 PM try "elderly instruments" I believe they have a website. |
Subject: RE: HELP: Looking for Guitar Strings From: catspaw49 Date: 15 Feb 00 - 11:03 PM Elderly ain't got 'em. Neither does Mandolin Bros. or 8 other biggies I checked at. Sorry. Spaw |
Subject: RE: HELP: Looking for Guitar Strings From: Clinton Hammond2 Date: 15 Feb 00 - 11:31 PM Mbo... I gotta dissagree... I tried Silk and Steel and I couldn't get them off my guitar fast enough... The weren't bright enough... they went dead fast and on my buddies guitar, the actually frayed!! LOL! But I like something with a little more bit to them... both physically and tonnaly (?is that a word?) So I'll stick to martin Medium gague myself... JenEllen... I've only ever heard of one brand of gold guitar stings, and for the moment the name escapes me.. but I know I saw an add for them in Accoustic Guitar magazine... so if they have a web presence, ya might be able to find more info there... I'd look it up, but my mom stole all my copies... |
Subject: RE: HELP: Looking for Guitar Strings From: Mbo Date: 15 Feb 00 - 11:38 PM I guess I'm just an ant-bright kinda guy. I haven't changed them in over a year. To me, they're the closest thing to playing a classical guitar--when you're playing a steel string. Maybe not so good for strumming, but for classical guitar technique--wooo haa! Hands down! --Mbo |
Subject: RE: HELP: Looking for Guitar Strings From: catspaw49 Date: 15 Feb 00 - 11:53 PM Before this conversation runs too far amok.......... String selection has a lot to do with the individual instrument, player's style, type of music, etc., along with personal sound preferences. If you're going for volume with a dreadnought or a jumbo and you like the sound etc. of med. gauge phosphor bronze....Its unlikely you'll care doodly squat about S&S!!! Then again if you're a finger stylist with a OO, S&S might suit you just fine. Spaw |
Subject: RE: HELP: Looking for Guitar Strings From: Clinton Hammond2 Date: 16 Feb 00 - 01:55 AM I really gotta learn to type!! LOL!!!!!! But that was exactily my point folks... everbody uses different strings... I recally having to use classical strings when I started and absolutly hating them... I could never get over the feeling that I was playing with a kids toy with plasitc strings... I also found Inever really developed any calouses with classical strings, and so could never really play for any length of time.. now I've been playing brass wound for so long, my left arm is nearly dead from the elbow down... I can amaze my friends by doing things like crushing out cigarettes or picking up hot plates from out of the oven with my left hand! And for my next trick... watch very carefully... Nothing up my sleeve.. and at no time will my hands leave my wrists... But Spaw?? What's a OO?? |
Subject: RE: HELP: Looking for Guitar Strings From: longhair Date: 16 Feb 00 - 07:29 AM If you like a bright sounding set of strings try DR phosphor bronze(a vietnam vet buddy calls them "willie pete" or white phorphorous, LOL). I tried these a while back on my Gibson and have been using them every since. They have a really good sound and seem to stay bright longer. As alway YMMV!!! longhair |
Subject: RE: HELP: Looking for Guitar Strings From: catspaw49 Date: 16 Feb 00 - 07:45 AM OO is a body shape/size designation used by Martin and now pretty well established around the business. From small to large is O, OO, OOO, OM, OOOO(sometimes M), D (for dreadnaught), J (Jumbo). Some manufacturers use other terms as well to replace Martin's or to designate a difference in shoulder slope or other things. Spaw |
Subject: RE: HELP: Looking for Guitar Strings From: Mbo Date: 16 Feb 00 - 10:02 AM Ahh..my friend Clinton--I've been playing Classical guitar for 5 years--and let me tell you--nylon strings DO give you callouses--I can slice the tip of my finger with a razor blade and not draw blood. But then again, in Classical guitar, your fingers are moving so much that heavier "super callous makers" would hinder speed and comfort--not to mention your hand would fall off--especially after playing an 18-minute fugue by Bach. Everone to their own taste, I suppose--but we CG's like 'em. --Mbo |
Subject: RE: HELP: Looking for Guitar Strings From: Clinton Hammond2 Date: 16 Feb 00 - 12:21 PM Oooo! LOL!!! show's what I know... But I'm still sticking to Bronze Wound Good Old Martin Medium Gague... ;-) And the only 18 minute fugue I've fallen into was when a pal of mine accidently dropped part of a tree we were falling on me... Oh.. wait.. that was an 18 minute FOG!! sorry... |
Subject: RE: HELP: Looking for Guitar Strings From: Terry Allan Hall Date: 16 Feb 00 - 06:37 PM I've bought them up in Canada a few years ago, haven't seen them in the US in several years. Sorry I can't be of more help. |
Subject: RE: HELP: Looking for Guitar Strings From: Murray MacLeod Date: 16 Feb 00 - 09:11 PM Most of the guitar players I know use D'Addario strings, either light or medium, and having tried every brand under the sun I concur with them.Nothin else lasts as well or sounds as bright. Martin strings ? Dead in ten minutes |
Subject: RE: HELP: Looking for Guitar Strings From: kendall Date: 17 Feb 00 - 08:33 AM I've tried every type of string on at least a dozen guitars over the years, and, it has been my experience that much depends on the guitar itself. My old Gibson J 45 preferred Martin Bluegrass. (Blue steel strings really sucked) My Taylor likes D'Addario medium bronze. They stay alive much longer than any other I've tried. I also use a cleaner called FAST FRET. It extendes the life of any string. |
