"Oh Lordy what to do"? I thought. Peter T. and Troll have battled it out on Mount Olympus, and the Prince of Pithy Polemics has tasted defeat. Not so. I guess my poor overworked brain will just have to absorb a bit more. Oh well, at least the "Song of the Day" idea never caught on! On the other hand..."Rant of the Day" might allow us to get it all off our chests early and then go to the post office with a big smile, and hearty "Howdja-do"!

Ok Rick, here goes! I get so pissed at folks who ignore signs that read "Right Lane Closed Ahead." Those folks just barrel on in that lane expecting those that adhere to the warning to let them into the flow of traffic when they get to where the right lane finally peters out! The offenders should be "strung up!"

Actually Sorcha, the guests probably DO come back after the song, they just never acknowledge that they have it.

I received instant gratification on my first visit where I asked for lyrics, now you are all stuck with me. At least once you are thus gratified, if you then join out of delirious gratitude, you get a personal page where veteran 'catters can tell you when you're full of sh*t. I consider it a main membership benefit.

BTW, some of the "bad" drivers are just lost in the song they are playing in their car at that particular moment. Don't we all take a turn at being incredibly dumb and unaware from time to time? Who was that I just passed, picking their nose and singing along with Barry Manilow, hmm? It's not nice to tell.

I think since so many sign is as Guests we have begun to think of them as one person who has all the characteristics each of us thinks is the worst. Each one is a human SOB like the rest of us, and personally I think we should be good hosts if we are going to label them guests. IMHO. In my newbie sort of way. Hoping not to offend. Caring how other people are. All of them.

If my blue clickie trickie is working today, here's the easy way to have two thoughts in one day.

Just Click here

AND

And if it didn't work, I'm sorry, I must need my nap.

Rants of the day???? ;0-- methinks this occurs in a fair percentage of the posts already!!!
I was thinking a Quotation of the Day night be nice; although Peter often offers a quotation with his TFTD, more often it is his own creation (and always a joy to read)--but it is nice to remember and honor the little known wit and wisdom of others who have gone before...

Song for the day was attemped, Jeri suggested it and tried implementing it, but it wasn't very popular, at teh time (last Oct/Nov).

Mbo tried doing a Quote of the Day and that kind of fell b the wayside, too.

NOT that I am trying to put a wet blanket on things, just relating past history.

For my part, on the weekend Thought for the Day, I usually do try to include some sort of quote unless I am waxing in a poor imitation of Peter's eloquence.

For What It Is Worth,

What about a Mudcat User's Feature of the Day?

... where a feature is named as the day's feature and all interested go there and comment or share tips on using that feature of the site well? It would then pile up as a series of threads to use as a user's guide, easily retrieved, always being updated, save a lot oh help time.

Best if it had its own thread prefix for ease of retrieve.

I think would appeal to and help orient newbies. I am taking that approach to learning what all is in here and have not exhausted any one feature yet, nor found them all.

Yeah, I tried a Quote of the Day thing for a bit, but some comments were made about it on a thread, saying it wasn't music-related enough. So I dropped it rather than be attacked. Also, sometimes the things I wanted to express in the quotes I posted were often taken too seriously. Often I was berated for anything from not caring about the present to being an unsympathetic bigot. I've often thought of doing a music quote for the day, by my constitution isn't quite up to it these days.

I look forward to reading the Thought of The Day.
It is part of my daily ritual. Like tearing off another page of my Larsin cartoon calendar.
I turn on the computer, make a strong cup of Starbucks coffee, pull up the Mudcat and look for Peter's posting. Then I pull out the Webster's New World Dictionary to look up half the words I don't understand. I call my sister about the other half because I have no clue what Peter is talking about.
Usually when I post, it has little to do with the topic but I can at least say I have intellectual friends.
On the weekends my postings tend to be more on topic because Mamakat is my mama and I don't need no dictionary to understand her.

OK, one more: How come I can't eat a huge dinner now without wanting to have a nap, like my father always did? Oh, it just ain't fair!

This just in, has nothing to do with the topic. I offer it in penance for being crabby earlier.

"Fallen"

There's an old priest who got sick of all the people in his parish who kept confessing to adultery. One Sunday, in the pulpit, he said, "If I hear one more person confess to adultery, I'll quit!"

Well, everyone liked him, so they came up with a code word. Someone who had committed adultery would say they had "fallen."

This seemed to satisfy the old priest and things went well, until the priest died at a ripe old age. About a week after the new priest arrived, he visited the mayor of the town and seemed very concerned.

The priest said, "You have to do something about the sidewalks in town. When people come into the confessional, they keep talking about having fallen."

The mayor started to laugh, realizing that no one had told the new priest about the code word.

Before the mayor could explain, the priest shook an accusing finger at the mayor and said, "I don't know what you're laughing about, your wife fell three times this week."

I could handle a "Rant of the Day." Hell, I could write one. Lemme see. It's February for crying-out-loud, and we're supposed to have some New England atmosphere fall on us tomorrow. A big pile of it. And the price of heating oil just went through the roof, so to speak, so I'm burning all the wood up in the fireplace, along with anything else combustable. Now where did I put that oil bill? I'm sick of winter. I can't wait for the grass to pop up on my lawn so I can anticipate ranting about crabgrass and lawnmowing. I can't wait for the flowers to fight their way toward the sun so I can bitch about weeds. I anxiously await the birdies starting outside my window and waking me up every blasted morning - "Hey! Go find a laylum, willya."

Hmmm...rant of the day. Maybe someone could just post a subject, and everyone could join in.

don't understand the problem.

Can we not all, start a thread with our thought, song, poem, quote, rant, limerick, joke, question, answer, or whatever, of the day, week, month, year, century or whatever? Is that not the reason the forum has grown to be the place that it is and will continue to grow into the place it will be (hopefully).

Just start a thread on the forum using any title you choose. If Max asks you not to do it on that subject (which is indeed rare), then don't do it but don't take any notice of any other opinion. For the only opinion that matters is shown by the contributions to that thread. If the subject is not generally appreciated the thread will die of 'starvation'. Which is the very best criticism and the only effective method of dealing with an 'unsuitable' subject (or poster). If contributors keep posting to that thread to say how unsuitable the subject is and try to 'bully' their opinions on others, then they are defeating their own end and should start their own thread and open up their opinions to the same "effective method".

I would make a distinction to posts to existing threads, where the tone set by the originator of the thread should be respected.

"If you build it they will come" Some may come. Some may come to knock it down and you should ignore them. Some may not come at all and you have your answer. …But you do have to be positive and build it first.

The Mudcat Songbook is a good example of this. …Just, do it!..…Start your thread…. I'll read it…Once anyway…

Well, I have even been known to have THREE thoughts in one whole day!

Thanks, Peter! Music is what makes up most of my psyche, and I derive a lot of my personal philosophy from the songs I hear and play. I was thinking of posting some of them--that way the would be quotes, thought-provoking, and music-related at the same time.

Go for it, Mbo -- there are always snipers -- I would sort of like somebody to do a traditional Song for the Day that someone could tell us the history of, or any interesting stories attached to it. It could even summarize a thread here. Even very well known songs like Shenandoah, or whatever. I haven't got the repertoire, or I would start it myself. Just to say: today's song is -- X, out of the DT -- and this is what it is about, or who first sang it, or something like that. Or why one likes it. I think other people would chime in.
yours, Peter T.

The only trouble I get with threads with the date in the title is that I get my dates mixed up, and they die away before they've got where they should be going, and (anyway until the SuperSearch comes back on line), it's pretty hard to check back and find posts you are looking for once they've drifted out of the present...

So I'd like to see a mnemonic word or so in with the title of Threads of the Day and Quote of the Day or Song of the Day or Grouch of the Day or whatever.

And I take it Doug is from one of those places where they drive on the wrong side of the road?...
