STRIKE UP THE BAND (HERE COMES A SAILOR)
Words, Andrew B. Sterling. Music, Charles B. Ward.
New York: Charles B. Ward Music Pub. Co., 1900.

1. Jack is the king of the dark blue sea.
Jack is as brave as the brave can be.
He's the boy the girls adore.
Oh, what fun when Jack's ashore!
For he is the fellow can make things hum.
Oh, how they sigh when they see him come,
Loaded down with gold so bright.
Welcome home, Jack. You're all right.

CHORUS: Strike up the band. Here comes a sailor,
Cash in his hand, just off a whaler.
Stand in a row. Don't let him go.
Jack's a cinch, but every inch a sailor.

2. Jack on his ship o'er the sea has skimmed.
Jack on the seas has the sails well trimmed;
But when Jack is on the land,
He gets trimmed to beat the band;
For he has a sweetheart in ev'ry port.
Love to a sailor is rare old sport.
When he's broke, it's Jack good-bye.
When he's flush, you'll hear them cry: CHORUS

Look up The Binghamton Crosbys on Youtube. This is their signature song. They have recordings of their group doing it going back 25 years. They do an amazing job with it.

The "folk" version (i.e., one that I either heard or more likely made up myself, can't remember) has "Grab all his dough" instead of "Don't let him go."

I remember a Popeye cartoon with a song that began "Strike Up the Band, for Popeye the Sailor!" - and thanks to the magic of YouTube, here it is. I'm guessing that this song (Strike Up the Band (Here Comes a Sailor)) is the source for the Popeye song.

According to IMDb.com, STRIKE UP THE BAND (HERE COMES A SAILOR) has been used 11 times in various movie soundtracks:

1. Navy Blues (1929) - played by the ladies' band at the party
2. Way for a Sailor (1930) - played during the opening credits; also played on a concertina by Wallace Beery and sung by the sailors
3. Suicide Fleet (1931) - played during the opening credits medley
4. Midshipman Jack (1933) - part of a medley played during the opening credits and at the end
5. The Bowery (1933) - performed by Pert Kelton and chorus girls
6. This Is My Affair (1937) - played at the Capital Cafe; also sung by a chorus at the end, with modified lyrics ("..., Here Comes the Navy")
7. Thunder Afloat (1939) - played and sung by a chorus during the opening and end credits; also played on harmonica by a sailor; also played as background music often
8. Hello Frisco, Hello (1943) - performed by June Havoc and chorus
9. The Naughty Nineties (1945) - played by the showboat band marching through Ironville
10. In Old Sacramento (1946)
11. Gobs of Fun (1949 Short Film)

The recording by June Havoc—presumably from "Hello, Frisco, Hello"—appears on two albums: "Famous Movie Melodies, Vol. 3" and "Movie Themes, Vol. 21," both of which can be heard on Spotify. However, she only sings one chorus and then segues into a different song: I'VE GOT A GAL IN EVERY PORT, which she sings as a duet with Jack Oakie.

The Bowery 1933 is available on YouTube with George Raft and Fay Wray. Cute version of the song.
