Subject: Thought for the day - February 19, 2000 From: katlaughing Date: 19 Feb 00 - 08:59 AM Instead of the Y2K bug, it seems many have caught the flu bug of the "pseudo" millennium in the first two months of this new year. Though in the long run, I guess we should all be glad it didn't catch our computers, when I hear of dear friends, like Catspaw, or PeterT, earlier, being down with the bug, I wish we had a capacity for transference. Just send all the germs to our computers, let the Virus Detector take care of it and go on our merry way! But, wishful thinking that it is, I am left only with the small bits of comfort I can offer, so, with that in mind, I'd like to say, "Spaw! Get better and kick those bugs out! We love you and miss you, darlin'!" luvyakat |

Subject: RE: Thought for the day - February 19, 2000 From: Little Neophyte Date: 19 Feb 00 - 02:05 PM The Advantages of Having the Flu. 1) Usually you lose some weight and for a moment in time you remember what it was like to be slender. 2) You gain a new appreciation on simple things like breathing and being able to walk down the street. 3) Once you survive the critical point, but are just too drained to start up the old routine, you can rent a stack of videos and catch up on all the movies you have been meaning to watch. 4) At the tail end of the flu, you can milk your condition and not be available to the outside world for as long as you can push it. 5) I personally believe the flu may toughen us up, building a resistance like genetic transmutation. If an insect can build up a resistance to agricultural herbicides & pesticides, maybe the flu allows us an opportunity to build a resistance to all the environmental hazards we are subjected to every day. Subject: RE: Thought for the day - February 19, 2000 From: Peter T. Date: 19 Feb 00 - 03:15 PM The Disadvantages of Having the Flu: 1) You are reinforced in the desire for Cartesianism, already prevalent, which would separate the body completely from the mind. 2) The relationship between each layer of blanket and keeping it over you, after three days of thrashing around legs entangled in them, is more complicated than any mathematical formula and makes you doubt your already doubtful sanity. The only answer is to get up and make the bed again, but you can't. So you lie there and work out how to reorder the blankets properly while you are still entangled in them. This eventually affects the mind in permanent ways. 3) You learn to hate food, all food, and are well on the way to being one of the those chalked up sannyasins with no stomachs on the road to Benares. 4) People begin to get used to avoiding you like a leper, which carries over into future life (cf. Ben Hur or Donald Trump) 5) Since there are only 100 days of the year when any real work gets done -- Jan 15-June 1, Sept 15 - Dec 10 (excluding weekends, Friday afternoons, lunchbreaks, shopping time, coffee breaks, and holidays), 4 weeks sick in January means the loss of 1/6 of the working year, which messes up substantial parts of the other 5/6, unless you are very organized, and can begin to encroach on the other 265 days. This is how your brain works when you are sick (see disadvantage 2 for further pointers). yours, Peter T. |
