Subject: RE: Lyrics needed From: Willie-O Date: 20 Feb 00 - 09:29 AM The song by The Band? On the album "Cahoots". I have a good book about The Band (Across the Great Divide, by Barney Hoskyns), which devotes a whole paragraph to bad-mouthing this song: "...easily the worst offender in the didactic stakes, a desperately forced eco-lament for the American eagle, the railroads, and the buffalo. "It's a shit-headed version", admitted Robbie....There's a very moving thing in there wanting to come out, and it ain't there in this version. So good luck, find the lyrics, and you might do better than the original...of course you don't have to agree with everything in a book, the writer hated "Daniel and the Sacred Harp" too, a song I love and I'm an atheist. Incidentally Hoskyns lists what he considers their 20 best songs and his top pick I agree with: "Acadian Driftwood"--a truly magnificent ballad and arrangement which they don't pummel to death with attempted passion, the story of the Acadian expulsion from Nova Scotia has enough pathos and drama that it needs a lighter touch. And exile from Canada is something those guys (the Band) knew about... My number's north, I got winter in my blood... Willie-O

Subject: Lyr Add: WHERE DO WE GO FROM HERE (Johnson/Wenrich From: GUEST Date: 09 Sep 07 - 03:58 AM Where Do We Go From Here? Paddy Mack drove a hack up and down Broadway Pat had one expression and he used it every day. Any time he'd grab a fare to take them for a ride, Paddy jumped upon his seat, cracked his whip and cried Where do we go from here, boys, where do we go from here? Anywhere from Harlem to a Jersey City pier. When Pat would spy a pretty girl he'd whisper in her ear, Oh, joy, oh, boy, where do we go from here? One fine day, on Broadway, Pat was driving fast, When the street was blown to pieces by a subway blast. Down the hole poor Paddy went, thinking of his past, Then he says, says he, I think these words will be my last. Where do we go from here, boys, where do we go from here? Paddy's neck was in the wreck but still he had no fear. He saw a dead man next to him and whispered in his ear, Oh joy, oh boy, where do we go from here? Strange to tell, Pat got well, then the war began. He enlisted in the army as a fighting man. When the drills began they'd walk a hundred miles a day, Though the rest got tired, Paddy always used to say Where do we go from here, boys, where do we go from here? Slip a pill to Kaiser Bill and make him shed a tear, And when we see the enemy we'll shoot them in the rear. Oh joy, oh boy, where do we go from here? Far away, every day, on the fighting line, Paddy's doing all he can, of course he's doing fine. When the soldiers hear him sing it fills them full of glee, You can make them happy if you sing the words with me. Where do we go from here, boys, where do we go from here? Slip a pill to Kaiser Bill and make him shed a tear. And when we see the enemy we'll shoot them in the rear, Oh joy, oh boy, where do we go from here? One fine night, Pat got tight, had an awful time, Took a bunch of ladies to a swell cafe to dine. When the waiter came around the ladies ordered wine, Paddy scratched his head a bit and hollered, Not for mine! Where do we go from here, boys, where do we go from here? After that, I'll take my hat and quickly disappear. My mouth keeps saying "Champagne" but my pocket book says "Beer." Oh joy, oh boy, where do we go from here? From the 78 by Arthur Fields, c1918. The verses seem to be slightly out of order. The last verse and chorus should probably be in second place, which is where they occur in the Billy Murray version. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Where Do We Go from Here? From: Bru Date: 09 Sep 07 - 06:22 AM Funny thing about theses lyrics. Sometime in the mid 1970's there was a song with excactly the same title, by group called Arkwright. Got plenty of Radio play at the time, but never appeared in the charts. Despite extensive googling in the last few years, and the resources of a radio station prior, I've never been able to track down either the song or the group, or any information. Anybody ever heard this one? Opening lines were: Arthur Edward Pickersgill, working down at mill Sorting out the . . . .. the ones to empty and to fill. |
