I always have a weather eye out for any info relating to the influence that African & Afro American sailors had & to what extant they had on maritime culture in the age of sail. I just came upon a reference to Easter & Christmas mummer festivals in the Bahamas, Jamaica & North Carolina. "John Canoe" is the prominent mummer. I'm looking to find out any info on mummer's history & use & any relating songs/music from this area that would have an African/Afro American connection. Thanks, Barry

Barry, it's too late to call tonight, but I'll check with my son-in-law tomorrow. He is from Antigua and still has lots of relatives there, plus he was really into the local music when he was in school there. If he doesn't know, someone else in his family may have some info.

Barry, the Bahamas Mardi Gras celebration is called "Junkanoo". Never knew about the John Canoe character.
