Could somebody explan what Hereme is.

I'll reply so you get at least a start on an answer, but I don't fully comprehend this. Basically, Hearme (hear me) is how a group of Mudcatters go online at the same time with microphones hooked up to their computers, and then take turns talking or sharing songs, live. They also can chat in text form while doing this. Everyone who is hooked up listens. Kat/katlaughing and Jon Freeman are the people I know who know more, and I am sure they will say more when they ee your message. In the meantime, enter [Hearme} in the filter and do a 3-dy seach for some more clues.

I downloaded the HearMe program earlier tonight, but not in time to get in on the sing-song. Enter in your browser, and it will lead you to the site where you will be able to register and download the soft ware. It's free, and a bit of a chore to load and learn, but I'm hoping the enjoyment will be well worth it. If your machine has a soundcard, you can pick up a microphone for about $10 US which you simply plug into the appropriate port in the back of your machine and you can then participate. If you don't have a soundcard, you'll have to upgrade or replace your system. I think the "HearMe" crew have decided to do the sing-song each Sunday at 7:30pm EST, so you'll have more opportunities to "play along".

Some distinctions:

There is the basic site/service HearMe.Com, which is part of a larger complex called MPlayer.Com. MPlayer is very much into online games and so forth, but HearMe is audio chat. If you look into this, you need to go to the section of HearMe called Entertainment, On Stage. There are a number of rooms going at all times, most of which are merely bad karaoke. I go there some nights and set up a room called LIVE ACOUSTIC BANJO, GUITAR, ETC.

However, this is not where the Mudcat sessions occur. For that, go to

The Hearme described in the paragraph above allows other sites--such as, in this case, Jon Freeman's site--to set up satellite operations, so to speak. The operations at this HearMe are very simple.

I think that one distinction that needs to be made is that the downloads for the above versions of hearme are different. The service offered at the Hearme.Com to join their chatrooms involves visiting there site and downloading and intalling the program. With pages like mine, when you visit the page and you have not got the neccesary plug in, you are promped to accept an agreement and the plug in is installed for you - it took less than a minute for me to get started.

Although pages like mine are very basic, as Dave has said, they do use the same servers. I am not sure what the full blown chat rooms are like but I would imagine that it involves somebody going there to open a room up wheras the setup I am using is open all the time - ie anybody who has the URL can pop in as and when they please and is not dependent on me starting anything or in my case, even whether my computer is switched on.

To add to the confusion, Hearme does offer a SDK which makes it possible for people to develop more advanced applications to host on their web sites but I think that costs money. I think that this is one of the possibilites that Max is evaluating at the moment.

The only thing I have against hearme is that it has yet to offer Mac support (not to mention ther PC operating systems) but hopefully that will change soon. It works well and has enabled a few of us to get together but I hope whichever way Max decides to go in the future is a little less exclusive than this.
