My husband is going to be trapped in Montreal over night on Mon. Mar. 6 due to the vagueries of Vermont's "public transit" system. Anyone got ideas for cheap hotels, floor space, rides south that miight resolve this one? I believe there are some Quebec folks, although the locator doesn't show any. Respond to my personal page if you've any thoughts. Thanks.

Susan A-R

hmmm, poor husband trapped in Montreal for the evening by himself ... the city has many 'attractions' to keep him occupied ... but I'm not sure any of them are cheap!

just kidding, of course. I can't really help since I haven't been there in years, but I did always enjoy the city.

Smoked Meat at Ben's, Susan. 'Nuff said!

He could stay away from the St Laurent Rooming house though, but that's another story.

Rick

Rick,

The smoked meat at Ben's is not very good. THE place for smoked meat is Schwartz's. Ask James Keelaghan, I took him there in November.

Susan,

If your husband likes old-time country music, there's "Hillbilly Night" at the Wheel Club on Monday nights. This is the "Hillbilly Night" that was famous at the (now defunct) Blue Angel for several centuries (decades really). But beware, it can be very smokey.

There are cheap hotels and motels in Montreal. You can get a decent room downtown for about $80-Canadian (about $50 in Yankee money) and much cheaper on motel strips.

Oh my! I don't think I am going to let my husband read this one. I'll just edit a bit and let him know about the down town stuff that Mike R mentioned.

He had best not follow Liam's advice. He doesn't eat meat, smoked or otherwise, but maybe he'd bring some home for his omnivorous wife, He hasn't got a proper appreciation of Hillbilly music, or smoking.

Gee, maybe I should go up on the 6th and meet him, just to make sure . . .

Susan

Susan - you definately should go and meet him. While the city does have fine male oriented entertainment (so I've been told - I wouldn't know from personal experience) ... the city really does have so much to offer, and I am sure you would enjoy seeing the sites, hearing the music, partaking of the fine dining, and my wife always found it a shopping paradise!

Get suspicious if he says anything about Saint Catherines Street. And if he wants a GREAT Greek seafood meal for not a lot of money, try MOLIVOS, on Avenue Guy

I once heard a comedian talking about Montreal who asked if St. Catherine was the patron saint of strippers.

Hmmm, looks like my cousin and I will go and pick him up at the station. I am sure some good food will be had along the way. As I am only two and a half hours away, I do appreciate the charms of the city, but the public transit between here and there is a bit odd. Thanks for all of the suggestions, well some of them anyway BG

Susan

I'm just back and planning my next trip! Does anyone have any experience of the Taj Mahal Hotel at Berri-UQUAM metro?

Anyone know of any collections of tunes or songs from Quebec?

What is a Danseuse Nue?

Jonathan
