The booklet to Frank Harte and Donal Lunny's CD "1798 - the first year of liberty" starts with the following quote: "Those in power write the history, those who suffer write the songs". Does anybody who is quoted here?

Angelika

Probably the same guy who wrote "History is written by the winners." Other than that, can't help much.

Here is an interesting one on the subject, by Shelley:

Most wretched men
Are cradled into poetry by wrong;
They learn in suffering what they teach in song.

GUEST,Angelika Thiele--

I don't know the answer to this, but are you familiar with the Gourd Records recording, The World Turned Upside Down? All material is American Revolutionary War period. Good stuff.

And there's Arthur O'Shaughnessy's The music-makers

We are the music-makers,
And we are the dreamers of dreams,
Wandering by lone sea-breakers,
And sitting by desolate streams;
World-losers and world-forsakers,
On whom the pale moon gleams:
Yet we are the movers and shakers
Of the world for ever, it seems.

With wonderful deathless ditties
We build up the world's great cities,
And out of a fabulous story
We fashion an empire's glory:
One man with a dream, at pleasure,
Shall go forth and conquer a crown;
And three with a new song's measure
Can trample an empire down.

We, in the ages lying
In the buried past of the earth,
Built Nineveh with our sighing,
And Babel itself with our mirth;
And o'erthrew them with prophesying
To the old of the new world's worth;
For each age is a dream that is dying,
Or one that is coming to birth.

Ask Mudcatter Martin Ryan. He probably sees Frank once a month.

All the best,

While looking, I did come across something that said,"As Frank Harte says often......." Maybe he quoted himself?

On the page of the notes which would be eleven, if they had been numbered, Frank says at the bottom: "As I have said many times before: ...."This in power ... songs." and we have an awful lot of songs."

It seems that he *is* quoting himself.

Angelica Theile

Angelica,

Regarding that quotation;

I have not visited the Mudcat for a very long time and so I was unaware that there was a question about whom I was quoting, until I met with Tom Munnelly and Nicholas Carolan at the recption for Altan's new record last night.

Well the answer is ...either with or without quotations... I was indeed quoting myself.

Frank.

Glad to see you here, Frank. When is your collection of Napoleonic songs due out? Any chance of "Say Me a Song" being re-released on CD, too? I was really happy to hear you in person at the Washington Irish Festival in 1998 (after playing "Daybreak and a Candle End" to death). Hope you will be touring over here in the US again soon!

Frank,

I'm so glad you replied to my question. Thanks!! I'm writing a textbook unit on Ireland for German learners of English and I desperately wanted to use this quote but couldn't very well have done so without knowing who to ascribe it to. But now I can. I hope you won't mind being quoted in the book.

Regards,

Angelika Thiele

I forgot to say that I think the Mudcat is one of the best places I've come across in the net. I'll definitely be around regularly from now on - thanks to Wolfgang who drew my attention to it.

Lamarca,

Regarding the CD. of Songs on Napoleon Bonaparte...the date of issue really depends on Donal Lunny and at the present moment he has little time available.... he is very busy recording and completing recordings with his band Coolfin.

With a bit of luck I hope that it may be issued some time in May.

Slan........Frank

the next line Frank often said was "and given our history, we have a lot of songs" Mick Moloney or Robbie O'Connell(?) wrote a song tribute to Frank Harte which features the line "those in power write the history; those who suffer write the songs". I'm trying to track down the lyrics online and in the process, I came upon this tribute by Mick Moloney to Frank Harte after Frank died in 2005: http://journalofmusic.com/focus/those-who-suffer-write-songs

I haven't found the lyrics yet, but I've found the chords!

Freddy,
I'm glad you like The Keeper of the Songs. I pasted the lyrics to below. If you want to put it on Mudcat, that's fine with me.
Robbie

The Keeper of the Songs
A tribute to Frank Harte

© 2007 Robbie O'Connell Slievenamon Music [BMI]

That once brash voice is silent now, no more we'll hear it soar
To call us back to Dublin's streets or Napoleon's cruel war
To feel again the nation's pride as our heroes made a stand
Or the sorrows of our countrymen when great hunger gripped the land

And though his voice rings out no more, his words still linger on
Those in power write the history, those who suffer write the songs

It was on the streets of Boyle one day, he heard a tinker's song
Of those heroes bold in Knockanure who bitterly were wronged
His life would never be the same from that fateful moment on
For he realized he'd found the truth in the verses of a song

And though his voice rings out no more, his words still linger on
Those in power write the history, those who suffer write the songs

For the voices of his people and the stories that they told
He cherished like a wealthy man might treasure bars of gold
Their songs like ghosts that long endured through centuries now gone
Were proudly given life once more by the keeper of the songs

And though his voice rings out no more, his words still linger on
Those in power write the history, those who suffer write the songs

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
