Subject: Head on Back to Bowlegs
From: Lonesome EJ
Date: 23 Feb 00 - 02:06 AM

Wondering if anyone remembers this snippet of a song that's been running around in my head for about 25 years. Seems to me it concerned an Indian who was from a town in Canada called Bowlegs. When things got tough for him, he would

"Call in the dogs
Piss on the fire
and head on back to Bowlegs"

Thanks to gargoyle for reminding me about this one, in the New Members February 22 Thread.

Subject: Lyr Add: BOWLEGS (Jeff Hanna)
From: Jim Dixon
Date: 14 Jan 10 - 10:48 PM

Transcribed by me from the Live recording:

BOWLEGS
(Jeff Hanna)

Sometimes things don't work out, but that's how life is, son:
All them little miseries to keep you on the run.
One mornin' you may wake up with your face down in the eggs,
So just put out the fire, call in the dogs, an' head it on back to Bowlegs.
Y'all just put out the fire, call in the dogs, an' head it on back to Bowlegs.

Well, lots o' people in this world are tryin' to make a buck.
Some folks ride in a limousine while others drive them big ol' Peterbilt trucks.
Remember that ol' saying 'bout the round holes and square pegs,
An' just put out the fire, call in the dogs, an' head it on back to Bowlegs.
Well, just put out the fire, call in the dogs, an' head it on back to Bowlegs.

There's no use tryin' to be what you're not.
You run on a treadmill and you'll get tired a lot.
Why not take some advice from me,
Even though I ain't no McCartney? (Yeah, yeah, yeah.)

Well, the moral of this story escapes me at this time.
I've been too busy standin' up here just tryin' to make this shit rhyme.
I'm a crazy drunken fool. When I finish off this keg,
I'm gonna piss on the fire, call in the dogs, an' head it on back to Bowlegs.
Piss on the fire, call in the dogs, an' head it on back to Bowlegs.

Why thanks Jim. Its just as morally uplifting and joy-inspiring as I remember! I will have to learn to perform this for some select friends.

Thanks for digging up an old favorite. I believe the reference is to Oklahoma. This album also featured the chestnut "Jeff: I'm headin' down to the Jerome. They got a beer down there with my name on it. Jimmy: They got a beer named Jeff?"

Ah yes, Aspen in the high old days when skiiers, debutantes, hippies, and cowboys scuffed the floor in the Hotel Jerome and danced the two-step at Little Nell's. Coulda got a little shack and a parcel o' land down valley for about 50K in them days. Shoulda. Any town with Hunter Thompson as it's Winterskjold Parade Marshall guaranteed you a passel o fun. Then came the Deluge...

Bowlegs is in Seminole County, Oklahoma.

I can't find any other settlement with that name.

I don't see that Aspen has anything to do with it. Is that where you heard the song, LEJ?

The song is about Bowlegs, OK, but the NGDB, at the time they did the album, were performing in Aspen and living in that area.

On the live recording of the NGDB I have, the song intro. refers specifically to Bowlegs Oklahoma. Incidentally, I've been singing this song for years.
