From: Little Neophyte Date: 23 Feb 00 - 12:11 PM After drinking too much the night before at a party I held at my house, I was told tomato juice would help me feel better. So I went to the refrigerator and pulled out an already opened bottle of tomato juice. I poured myself a nice cold tall glass of the stuff. I was so dehydrated I downed the entire thing only to realize it was mixed with vodka for the Caesars we were making the night before. Then there was the time I had a terrible stomach ache and thought I should take some Kaopectate medicine. I was pretty young and had no clue how much to take. I started drinking it from the bottle only to realize it was Calamine lotion which has the same pink colour. Bonnie |

Knowing Rick all to well, I'm sure he put this in as a reaction to all the "something of the day" posts. Didn't Art Theime do that with condoms a year ago? However, just to throw a monkey wrench into his satirical plans, I'll ask a serious question. Two out of three people that I know are currently on some form of anti-depressants. Most have regular office jobs and certainly credit work pressures for much of their depression symptoms. My doctor offered me that option but so far I'm staying drug-free, other than wine and detective novels. Are there any Mudcatters who'll 'fess up to being big financial supporters of the "Prozac" industry? By the way, Catspaw, when we met you and heard all that "rattling" we thought it was simply hunger pains! Duckboots |

Six years ago, after a family crisis, I went on anti-depressants. The change had beendramatic. I am a nicer person to be around and I like myself a lot better. Like you, I self-medicated with booze for years. Booze is not the answer. If you have been diagnosed with depression, get help. There are alot of different therapies out there and not all of them rely on drugs. The stigma of mental illness is slowly fading and as more and more of us come out the walls are coming down. Depression is a disease. It can be caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain. Find out! It is not a moral weakness. It is a disease and it is treatable. As you can tell, this is a topic that I view with some passion. If There had not been the stigma, I might have sought help sooner and some of the bad things in my life would not have happened. I do not hide my condition. I am rather an advocate for openness about mental illness. If you need someone to talk to, e-mail me.I'll listen. troll |

It worked pretty well and even though I wasn't depressed to begin with, I felt a lot better about life. It quit working on the headaches and I went off. Got a new Dr who put me back on - at more than twice my previous dosage. After a week, I had every nasty side effect in the book. I was on Amitryptoline (another anti-depressant) for migraines earlier in life. I felt half dead for the entire time. Funny, but the same chemical imbalances in the brain that contribute to depression also seem to contribute to migraines. Now I take an herb, feverfew, which works just as well at preventing migraines as the drugs did, but has no side effects. |

I stopped taking it four days later.... four days without a minute of sleep. I took Paxil once, and threw up. I use full spectrum light bulbs which more closely simulate natural light. They're about $5 a pop, but they work wonders for your mood, reduce eye strain, and last about twice as long as regular bulbs. My depression is more seasonal though, I have no symptoms in the summer. From: Duckboots Date: 24 Feb 00 - 01:05 AM Thanks for the concern Troll and Hagbard, but I have to say that very shortly after leaving a job that had become seriously unpleasant due to understaffing I felt a lot better. It's a rather frightening prospect to try and reinvent yourself at forty, but after having spent 15 years in high rise offices, surrounded by many equally frustrated, harried and unhappy people, I welcome the opportunity to try and find something more satisfying to do with my life. My doctor explained that if I went on the right medication, I'd be able to return to work in a few weeks, and things would "appear" much better. I guess I'm taking the long way around, but I think for myself, it's the best way. The "wine and detective stories" cure was meant as a joke. I guess I've been married to Rick long enough that I occasionally throw out the same kind of lines as he does, without realizing they might be taken more seriously than their original intent. Rick believes that one must "create one's own environment as fully as possible" to be happy. For years he played in bars, and tells me that he was not a contented person, constantly frustrated at the musical ignorance of his audiences, but unwilling to let go of the large-for a musician-paychecks he was earning. He only plays now where people value folk music and supliments that with teaching two days a week. He gets VERY involved with his students, and when someone makes real progress, he is ecstatic. I guess I'm looking for a job where I feel I can "make a difference",-although I wouldn't mind one that pays more than his. Duckboots |

From: Micca Date: 24 Feb 00 - 08:24 AM Duckboots, I was lucky enough to have a chemistry teacher when I was about 23yo explain this to me in words of one syllable(all I could absorb at the time) He said the choice is a job you dislike, that will bore you you rigid, and pays you lots of dosh to do what you like when you are away from it, or a job you enjoy and can get involved in but that will never make you rich, I opted for the second and It is still enjoyable, I became an administrator for 8 years and made dosh but not too much and was stressed out to almost breakdown level, then they did me the biggest favour ever, they made me redundant, I could claim my pension , and now I work part-time, with students again and I am enjoying life, my stress level dropped by about 99,999% overnight. You spend 1/2 your wakeing hours at work, if you are not enjoying it, get out.Plan and scheme and do it in your own time and when it suits you but life is too short for Crap eating. |
