I have heard that Great Dreams was orginaly in an old Methodist hymnal I would love to know if there are more verses. I learned it of of his record years ago but have forever been curious of its orgin

There is a songbook which transcribes the first few minutes of each of the songs on the Folkways recording mentioned above (1959). Joseph Spence is as much about where the music isn't as where it is. If you like syncopation, look no further.

Incidentally, it might be worth mentioning the existence of the Hokey Pokey collection called Out On the Rolling Sea HPR 2004.2, which includes a version of Great Dreams [sic] from Heaven by Michael Chapman, and I Bid You Goodnight sung wonderfully by Blue Murder (Watersons and friends).

It is "a tribute to the music of Joseph Spence", but does not include the man himself.

Joseph Spence, if you haven't herd him, sounds like he's picking an old plywood guitar with a bent neck using a manhole cover as a pick, while he mumbles the words. THis said, I must add that I think he's absolutely wonderful. An acquired taste but, IMO, one well worth acquiring.

And an absolutely superb "laying down" hymn in each manifestation! Have you heard the Carthy/Waterson performance of the English version? Or, if you ever get the chance, listen to Mudcat's own LaMarca and her husband George sing it. They grace the Washington, DC, region with some damned fine singing. Caroline and I were hoping to sing it at the memorial service for Gerry Armstrong, but ran out of time, so her daughters and granddaughters led us all in a spirited rendition of the Bahamian version. A fitting conclusion to the service.

The Cyber Hymnal gives Sarah Doudney as the writer of the words and Ira David Sankey as the writer of the tune of 'The Christian's Goodnight'. I noted from a thread - quite some time ago now - that you have the Yazoo set 'How Can I Keep from Singing'. On volume 1, there is a 1928 recording of Memphis gospel/blues singer Lonnie McIntorsh 'Sleep, mother, sleep'. Its first verse goes:

Sleep on, mother, sleep on, lie down and take your rest
You've got to lay your head upon your Saviour's breast
I love you lord my saviour and my God
Sleep on, sleep on, sleep on

The first verse of the Doudney/Sankey hymn is:

Sleep on, belovèd, sleep, and take thy rest
Lay down thy head upon the Savior's breast
We love thee well, but Jesus loves thee best
Good night! Good night! Good night!

Fascinating spread of versions from Bristol, the Bahamas and Memphis.

Ira Sankey??? The Ira Sankey I knew was a PRCA rodeo contractor out of Rose Hill, KS! (Doubt if he ever went to a "buildin'" church in his life......bull ridin's was on Sunday!

I learned it from one of the great folk recordings of all time: The Real Bahamas on Nonesuch. That's the album we all learned "I Bid You Goodnight" from, too, long before we discovered IBYG was an Ira Sankey hymn.

Sandy, I don't know because I pasted the song from the URL. The notes there said he learned it from his teacher. GUESTchrish said he/she was having trouble 'cause of the dialect,so not having heard it, I suppose it could be either.

Calling all Bahamians!

I love the Joseph Spence song "The Great Dream Of Heaven" (turned into a famous guitar instrumental by Ry Cooder). Sadly, I can't make out all the lyrics, due to Mr. Spence's idiosyncratic performance style.

Can anyone help? Many thanks.
