The song was written by Paddy Reilly, now with the Dubliners, with whom he had often appeared before. It refers to Luke Kelly, one of the founders of the Dubliners, who died from a brain tumor in his mid 40's. A very sad and sweet song, especially as Paddy does it.

The Dublin Minstrel - Paddy Reilly

From Dublin's streets and rows, all down the years,
Came great musicians and balladeers.
There was a special one, a red-haired minstrel boy,
And when he passed away, a city mourned its favorite son.

    CHORUS
All 'round the markets and down the quays,
The sad news spread to the Liberties.
The minstrel boy was gone, he'll sing no more,
And Luke, somehow, we know we'll never see your like again.

He liked to laugh and sing, he loved a jar,
And his songs rang out in many city bars.
I walked by the old canal, near which he used to live,
Down Raglan Road, I'm sad, as he'd so much left to give.

    CHORUS

INSTRUMENTAL BREAK

Now the show is over, the curtain's down,
A flame no longer burns in Dublin town.
While the Liffey flows beneath the Ha'penny Bridge,
You'll be remembered, Luke, for all you've sung and all you did.

    CHORUS

I just did a net search with MSN and Google and this is the closest hit I've had for The Minstral boy... if you ever come back here and see this and have the Minstral Boy Lyrics in a sendable form my e_mail is Mt-Mt@juno.com

in this time of war drums I'd like to know the whole lyrics to it. That is the one that starts with "The Minstral Boy to the war has gone in the ranks of death you will find him..."

BTW Colm Meany of Star Trek and many great movies sang part of the minstral boy on an episode of ST: the Next Generation... "the Wounded"

Thanks from the Bonnie High lands of the Pacific North West Montana that is...

Hi, Nick, Paddy Reilly wrote it, I was looking for the music for the tune. As a matter of fact, we will be seeing Paddy tonite in concert in Conklin, Michigan at a tiny pub 'the Fenian'. My husband sings the song, but I was looking for the music to accompany him. He plays by ear and it takes him a long time to plunk out the notes for me.

I'm not sure who wrote it, but it's a song about Luke Kelly.

Thanks Molly. You are correct. It is not this one. It starts out something like this - "Round Dublin's streets and bars...."

Are you talking about the one that starts out,
The minstral boy to the war has gone?
