Subject: RE: desperatly seeking danny boy sheet music From: GUEST,Bruce O. Date: 24 Feb 00 - 03:36 PM There's an ABC on my website, along with those of variant versions, and I think Micheal Robinson has a gif as well as the history of the tune at www.standingstones.com |
Subject: RE: desperatly seeking danny boy sheet music From: Gypsy Date: 24 Feb 00 - 07:28 PM Remember, the tune is actually Londonderry Aire. You ought to be able to find it in Richard Robinsons Tunebook has gif, as well as ABC. Might be at the Kitchen Musician site, as well. |
Subject: RE: desperatly seeking danny boy sheet music From: GUEST,DougR Date: 24 Feb 00 - 07:31 PM Benjamin: Thank you for that lead! As many of the oldtimers on the Mudcat can tell you, I have been searching for a Scottish Ballad, "Think on Me," by Alicia Anne Scott for almost a year. The sheetmusic company you recommended has it and it is on order. I appreciate it. DougR |
Subject: RE: desperatly seeking danny boy sheet music From: GUEST,PEtr Date: 25 Feb 00 - 11:45 AM Why? I thought it was the London Derriere |
Subject: RE: desperatly seeking danny boy sheet music From: Amos Date: 25 Feb 00 - 12:18 PM You think you're desperate now, wait til you get the sheet music! Just don't take any gigs in bars on Saint Pat's day or you'll wish you'd never heard of anyone named Danny, regardless of gender, anytime! A |
Subject: RE: desperatly seeking danny boy sheet music From: DougR Date: 25 Feb 00 - 10:25 PM Ah Amos, how did you become so jaded? DougR |
Subject: RE: desperatly seeking danny boy sheet music From: Gypsy Date: 25 Feb 00 - 11:13 PM Ah, lad, do ya no ken that it is a eulogy from faither to son is the song? Have some sma' respect. |
Subject: RE: desperatly seeking danny boy sheet music From: Crowhugger Date: 25 Feb 00 - 11:45 PM If you know anyone with piano books and don't mind wilfully infringing upon copyright, thumb through their books of popular tunes, or sing-along etc. till you find it under either of its names (Londonderry Air or Danny Boy, the latter more likely to include lyrics) and hit the copy shop. Crude, illegal and effective. Following these instructions will make you a criminal, thieving from the hardworking soul who made the arrangement you shouldn't be copying without written permission. Which, if you partake of any number of recreational substances, you already are. |
Subject: RE: desperatly seeking danny boy sheet music From: Amos Date: 26 Feb 00 - 12:00 AM My apologies, you hopelessly sentimental wanks! I got jaded from having to sing the -)(&$@Q^ tune so many times in a row I lost my voice for a week. In a bar. On Saint P's day. Many years ago.. I love good rich sentiment as much as anyone, I guess, but boy did I get overdone on that one...burned to a crisp. A |
Subject: RE: desperatly seeking danny boy sheet music From: DougR Date: 26 Feb 00 - 11:41 PM Well Amos, I sympathize, I really do. Many performers I know that have the same experience simply say, "Been there, done that earlier in the set. If you want to come back next St. Pat's day .." Make a bet though. Suppose you recorded "Danny Boy" and it sold 100 million records. When doing personal appearances, would you deny your live audiences the pleasure of hearing you do it live? :>) DougR |
Subject: RE: desperatly seeking danny boy sheet music From: Bob Bolton Date: 27 Feb 00 - 12:53 AM G'day GUEST wcrs@indigo.ie, If you are still seeking the sheet music ... and if you are worried about the copyright police - don't. Fred. E. Weatherly, who wrote it (the lyrics to the air collected - around 1853 - in Londonerry by Miss Jane Ross of Limavardy) died in 1933. That puts it out of copyright- irrespective of whatever the Americans do to their own copyrights - since he was a Pommy: an Oxford tutor, author of books on logic, Bristol Lawyer ... and lyric composer. Danny Boy was a failure when he composed it in 1911 (there were, after all several good sets ofwords to the tune) but he sent the lyrics to (a sister?) in America and any soppy Irish song went over like a bomb! The original American sheet music, by Boosey & Hawkes New York, is reproduced in Popular Irish Songs, Ed. Florence Leniston, Dover Publications Inc, New York, 1992 and is marked: Copyright MCMXIII by Boosey & co. You may find the book in a library (or it may still be in print). Failing all else, I could copy the 4-page arrangement and email you 1-bit GIFs ... but I doubt that it should come to this. Regards, Bob Bolton |
Subject: RE: desperatly seeking danny boy sheet music From: Amos Date: 27 Feb 00 - 12:58 AM I'd still only be singing it roughly twice in your scenario -- the other million renditions being mechanical reproductions. But I'll stop whining. Wouldn't want to ruin anyone's Snakes day :>) |
Subject: RE: desperatly seeking danny boy sheet music From: Benjamin Date: 27 Feb 00 - 04:35 AM Doug, I'm glad it helped. Could this be the end of people asking for sheet music? I should try ordering something sometime. BMW |
Subject: RE: desperatly seeking danny boy sheet music From: Crowhugger Date: 27 Feb 00 - 06:51 AM Dear Abby, *BG* (sorry, couldn't help it) I have developed a serious problem since last night. It began when I innocently explored your Danny Boy link to the Scriptorium at Duke University. I can't get my eyes off my computer screen. I can't get my hands off the mouse and keyboard. I can't sleep; what's worse, I don't want to. And now I'm nearly out of paper since finding the section on cakewalks and schottisches (sp?) and the stores don't open for hours yet. The old crow is pecking at my butt, which is her signal that it's time for a hug, but I can't part with the Scriptorium. Please help! P.S. I need a new cupboard for my growing collection of black music (cakewalks) being appropriated by The White Establishment. What colour should the new cupboard be? |
