Subject: RE: Lyr Req: russian folk song_million's rose From: Crowhugger Date: 26 Feb 00 - 11:04 PM This might take a while, but I have a half-Aunt who was born and raised in the USSR and now living in either North Carolina or South Carolina, USA. My mother probably has current contact information. Her father, my grandfather, was a complete convert to communism in the years following 1932 when he went there ostensibly to make a film (it fell through). He stayed in the unshakeable belief that anything was better than being black in 1930's America. (My white grandmother escaped with my mother just as Stalin was slamming the door shut.) My grandfather's other kids were raised entirely in the Russian culture. Since he was a performing artist - acting, playwriting, dancing, anything for a ruble, let's hope he knew the song you want and taught it to my (half-) Aunt. Maybe some sort of update in a day or two. Hope so...I'm curious about this because it kind of relates to a lost part of my personal history. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: russian folk song_million's rose From: Crowhugger Date: 26 Feb 00 - 11:33 PM Here is a lead that might help. I found it at Indiana University's Russian and Eastern European Institute (REEI) web page. There's a program open to musicians, tourists, you name it. Along with studying the language and culture, there are workshops to study song, dance etc. The person to contact for info would hopefully know who on the REEI faculty is familiar with Russian songs. The contact names are:
Dr. Marina Oborina, Academic Programs Director, and Good luck! |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: russian folk song_million's rose From: Crowhugger Date: 26 Feb 00 - 11:43 PM Sorry, that was a waste--the URL's exist no more. Maybe you'll find someone actually at Indiana State U in the Russian and Eastern European Institute who can help you. Go to Indiana State U -- Majors and scroll down, down, down, till you get to Russian and Eastern European Institute. I checked this URL, and it works for me. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: russian folk song_million's rose From: AKS Date: 27 Feb 00 - 03:37 PM Hello, this 'Milliony Alyh Roz' of Alla Pugacheva was quite popular in the SU back in the 80's. The song - if I remember correctly - was composed some twenty years ago by Latvian composer Raimondas Paulas and the lyrics are by Voznesensky whose first name escapes me now. Paulas is 'guilty' of a mighty bunch of good melodies which were recorded by many famous soviet performers. I think he lives in Latvia now and is still active. I found this site where they claim (in Russian) to have more than 250 Alla P. song lyrics, roses included, but somehow the catalogues refuse to open from here. Anybody else manage? If not, I could type them for you. AKS |
