Subject: Lyrics req.: Farewell Faroes

I faintly recollect a song titled Farewell Faroes, or Farewell to the Faroes, sung, perhaps by the MCCalmans.

Can anybody help with the lyrics? Thanks Wolfgang

spelling "Pharoah"

'fraid I can't help with the lyrics but it is also known as 'Farewell the Faroe Isles' and is I think on 'House Full' by the McCalmans.....a cracking song; the album notes will also give a composer as it is not, I think, Trad; Orrabest! J

I have the House Full album, and will try to make the lyrics out for you, though it's not going to be easy.

Subject: Lyr Add: FAREWELL THE FAROES (McCalmans)
From: Wolfgang
Date: 09 Jun 10 - 09:30 AM

I've found the lyrics now here.

Wolfgang

FAREWELL THE FAROES
C F C G
Fare-thee-well the Firth of Fourth and all the pubs and lassies to.
C G C F C G
We'll traw the Northern Seas and seek the harbours though they're few.
C G C C G C

Oh, we fight the wind and the rain, so here we go again.

There is beer enough to drink, but never time to see it through.
Pray God we'll se some land, to rest a while and try their brew.

Oh, we fight the wind and the rain, so here we go again.

The shipping forecast says: Gale force, winds and stormy seas.
So take a break ashore, The Faroe Isle so let it be.

Oh, we fight the wind and the rain, so here we go again.

We make a round for shore, maybe craps will damp her toe.
We'll make a few men sour. To a bigger town so wide and tall.

Oh, we fight the wind and the rain, so here we go again.

Farewell the Faroe Isle, we saw the sun, we felt the wind,
and though we often tried, we often tried but never sinned.
And farewell land-to-leave and through the laughter and the smiles,
we'll think in harmony of people in the Faroe Isle.
And still we must go on we fight the sea, the wind and rain.
And still we must go on, oh let us be away again.

We'll go away again, we'll go away again.

Bright coloured houses stands together in Torshavens bay.
The only potent there, where there is no spot to spend your pay.
There's dryfish for your tea, there's dryfish for your lunch my dear.
For dinner there is dryfish, when it comes to it they dry your beer.
And still we must go on, we fight the sea, the wind and rain.
And still we must go on, oh, let us be away again.

We'll go away again.

Maybe not 100% correct, but a bit better than the above version:

Fare thee well the Firth of Fourth
And all the pubs and lassies too
We'll trawl the Northern Seas
And seek for harbours, though they're few

[Chorus 1]
Oh, we'll fight the wind and rain
So here we go again

There's beer enough to drink
But never time to see it through
Pray god we'll see some land
To rest a while and try their brew

[Chorus 1]

The shipping forecast says
Gale force winds and stormy seas
We'll take a break ashore
The Faroe Isle, let's let it be

[Chorus 1]

We'll make a run for shore
Maybe cramps may damp her so
May make a few men sour
To a bigger town, so away we go

[Chorus 1]

[Instrumental]

Farewell the Faroe Isles
We saw the sun, we felt the wind
And though we often tried
We often tried but never sinned

And farewell land-to-leave
And through the laughter and the smiles
We'll think in harmony
Of people in the Faroe Isles

[Chorus 2]
And still we must go on
We'll fight the sea, the wind and rain
And still we must go on
So let us be away again
We'll go away again

Bright coloured houses stand
Together in Torshaven's bay
They all day pulled in there
Where there's no spot to spend your pay

There's dry-fish for your tea
There's dry-fish for your lunch, my dear
For dinner there's dry-fish
When it comes to it, they dry your beer

[Chorus 2]

And again and again and again and again and again and again

Thanks Frank but it's Firth of FORTH, the River Forth being the one with all the famous bridges, including the very new Queensferry Crossing.
The fourth verse looks a bit odd, in both versions: will check the YouTube clip if it's still available.

Listened repeatedly to that 4th verse, but still can't quite get it all, even with headphones on and slowing it down! But what I have so far...

Let's take her ROUND once MORE,
..... this glass with amber ....,
They say if you must ......
Then pick a time, .........or small

Make of that what you will, but I can't make sense of v 4 in either of the other 2 versions!

Have checked Ian McCalman's own lyrics site, but not there.
