I am rephrasing this title, maybe someone will recognize it. It is very popular song from the Flapper era or later. 20's or30's. Hear it a lot played with a tenor banjo or a uke. Full name "Please don't talk about me when I'm gone." Jim

I recognize it, my banjo player plays it, I just fake along. I can't believe I couldn't find it on the net today! If nobody gets it before tomorrow afternoon, I'll call my banjo-er and get it for you. What's with all the ragtime stuff anyway? You are s'posed to be practicing for Paddy's Day!

The Mills Brothers had a big hit with this song in the 1940s. Might check their CDs.

Please Don't Talk About Me When I'm Gone
(Gene Austin or Bert Lown)

Please don't talk about me when I'm gone,
Oh, honey,
Though our friendship ceases from now on,
And listen,
If you can't say anything that's nice,
It's better not to talk at all,
Is my advice,
We're parting,
You go your way,
I'll go mine,
It's best that we do,
Here's a kiss!
I hope that this brings,
Lots of luck to you.
Makes no difference how I carry on,
Remember,
Please don't talk about me when I'm gone.

I have it on a tape by Liz Masterson of Colorado.

Patty Paige did it way back when, I think.

Don't know the chords, but if you get them, I'd love to have 'em.

OK, finally got a hold of the banjo player, and since the words are in the above post, what I am going to do here is give you the chords with just the word they are over on the sheet music. Do you want the melody line posted in abc format?
Please=C,(a)bout=E7,gone=A7
through=D7,(friend)ship=Ab7,ceases=G7,on=C
And=C/E,lis-=Eb07,-ten=G7/Dif=C,any=E7,nice=A7
not=D7,all=G7/4(this is odd-the 7 is over the 4),my=G7(ad-)vice=C
You=E7,best=A7,
Here's=D7,lots=G7luck=F#7,to=F7you=G7
Makes=C,how=E7,on=A7,
please=D9,about=G9,Pleas=C7,talk=B7,a-=Bb7,bout=A7,
Please=D9,(a)bout=G9,gone=C,C/E,Eb(0)7,Dm7-5,C7.
If this is not coherent, I'll go back and type in all the words again with the chords.

The Society for the Preservation & Encouragement of Barber Shop Quartet Singing in America, Inc. (SPEBSQSA) has done a great arrangement of this song. They're headquartered in Kenosha, WI, and easy to track down.

I always thought that this was a Billy Holiday song. I'm sure I heard her do it on one of her records. In fact, I can hear her singing it right now. Amazing.

Love, annap

Willie Nelson (believe it or not) did this one (and very well I might add) on a CD titled "Moonlight Becomes You." Justice Records, JR1601-2.

Subject: Lyr Add: PLEASE DON'T TALK ABOUT ME WHEN I'M GONE
From: Jim Dixon

Here are the lyrics with verses, from the sheet music at Baylor University:

PLEASE DON'T TALK ABOUT ME WHEN I'M GONE
Words and music by Sidney Clare, Sam H. Stept, and Bee Palmer. ©1930.

1. Years we've been together.
Seems we can't get along.
No matter what I do,
I don't appeal to you.
Makes no diff'rence whether
I am right or I'm wrong.
If we can't be sweethearts,
This much you can do:

CHORUS: Please don't talk about me when I'm gone,
Oh, honey, though our friendship ceases from now on.
And listen: if you can't say anything real nice,
It's better not to talk at all; that's my advice.
We're parting; you go your way; I'll go mine; it's best that we do.
Here's a kiss; I hope that this brings lots of luck to you.
Makes no difference how I carry on.
Remember, please don't talk about me when I'm gone.

2. Just before our parting,
Something I want to say:
I'm really sorry now
For ev'ry broken vow.
Sweetheart, now you're starting
On your own little way.
One thing please remember
In your mind somehow: CHORUS.
