I heard this song at a pub about a year and a half ago and it's been bugging me ever since. I believe (but don't know for sure) that it's an Irish song about death. The line I can remember goes somthing like this:

I couldn't follow you Even if I wanted to.

I'd appreciate any help you folks can give me on this. Thanks.

Sounds like Christy Moore's 'Ride On' (written by Jimmy McCarthy). This is all I have:

True you ride the finest horse I've ever seen
Standing 16' 1" or 2" with eyes wild and green
And you ride the horse so well, hands light to the touch
I could never go with you no matters how I wanted to

Ride on, see you
I could never go with you no matter how I wanted to

When you ride into the night without a trace behind
Run your claw along my gut one last time
I turn to face an empty space where once you used to lie
And look for a smile to light the night through a teardrop in my eye ^^

Aha!

A topic I've been meaning to ask about myself! I found this marvelous, wonderful song when someone sent me Christy Moore's recording of it, and it's haunted me ever since... Does anyone know anything more about the origin of the song, what it's about, if there is more of it, etc? A friend told me he touhgt it was traditional, but now you list an author... Help! It's such a beatiful piece of a story, I can't help but want to know more...

HELP -- TRYING TO GET COPY OF MUSIC FROM OLD TUNE, THOUGHT TO BE RECORDED BY JAN PIERCE:

riding down from Bangor, on an eastern train, after weeks of hunting, in the woods of Maine, quite extensive whiskers, beard, moustache as well, sat a student fellow, tall and slim and swell.

into village station, glides the eastern train, ---etc.

Amergin.....The song is definately McCarthy's "Ride On", the definitive version being from Christy Moore. The lyrics to your second reply are it. The song is short and to the point. All the best.....calach

*ponder* Thanks for the link, Alison... As I mentioned, I've spent a while thinking about the song's meaning myself... I always wondered if it was a fairy lover, not quite human, maybe... could explain the claw, and the fine horse, as the fey folk were known to have the most beautiful horses anyone has ever seen, and why he couldn't follow... I wish there were more of it, but maybe that would destroy the mystery.

You folks were right, Christy Moore's version is the definitive version....I just picked up a cd of his the other day that had Ride On on it and was very beautiful...I then had to go back and pick up another of his cds and on it heard the most wonderful cover of First Time That Ever Saw Your Face on it....Thanks for the tip. The guy is very talented.

If all of you interested in Hi Lilly, Hi Lo will do a forum search on it you will find the words and tune posted. It is a good idea to start a separate thread with a few key words in the title when you are looking for a different song, and that is what happened to Hi Lily.
For one (of many) threads discussing this, try this blue clicky thing.

Barbara

"Hi Lili Hi Lo": attributions, words and chords.

It’s best not to mix discussions of different songs in one thread. Please go to one of these threads if you want to discuss one of the songs mentioned here:

RIDE ON written by Jimmy MacCarthy, recorded by Christy Moore and others.

HI-LILI, HI-LO
