Thanks, ketchdana. (I don't play ABC myself; I was asking for the file on the behalf of others who might want to play the song.)

leeneia...
Might this help?:

The program "abcm2ps -c lonerobin-inC-3.abc 2>/dev/null " will create
a postscript file called Out.ps (assuming you put the abc code into a
file named lonerobin-inC-3.abc

(I'm hoping the combination of Automatic Linebreaks and html pre tags
gives something useable.)

Thanks, Joe. I think that arrangement would make a nice number for a bluegrass band.

I've made a MIDI of this song, which I remember from childhood. I've left ii in the original key, which was B flat.

It has three parts - banjo, recorder (which represents voice) and a violin descant when the chorus repeats. I worked from the recording by Jane Turzy, which I found on YouTube. It's a delightful little thing.

I've sent the MIDI to Joe, and I hope it appears soon. Perhaps somebody who knows how will make an ABC of it.

(Cy Coben)

There's a lonely little robin in a tree by my door
And it waits for it's mate to return evermore
So remember, please remember, that I'm lonely too
Like the lonely little robin I'm waiting for you.

When you went away dear you promised that you'd write
And I thought that you would be true
But I find the mailbox as empty day and night
As empty as the arms that held you.

There's a lonely little robin in a tree by my door
And it waits for it's mate to return evermore
So remember, please remember, that I'm lonely too
Like the lonely little robin I'm waiting for you.

--- Instrumental ---

I walk down the lane down the lane we used to walk
Where we strolled together for years
And my cheeks are red, as it's hard for me to tell
If raindrops are falling my dear.

There's a lonely little robin in a tree by my door
And it waits for it's mate to return evermore
So remember, please remember, that I'm lonely too
Like the lonely little robin I'm waiting for you.

Like the lonely little robin I'm waiting for you...

There's another verse:

Oh, how I miss you when night begins to fall, and my heart recalls memories.
From outside my window I seem to hear you call, butit's only THE wind in the trees.

I think 'THE' gets two notes.

I'm working on the melody and chords for this song. Give me some time, as I'm transcribing it from a video on YouTube.

Meanwhile, are you a soprano, alto tenor or bass? Do you know what your first chord is? That should give a hint as to what key you need.

This is the version I'm using, but it seems to be in the key of B-flat, so I'll be transposing it once I get it down.

LONELY LITTLE ROBIN. I sing it all the time.
As sung by Rex Allen

CHORUS: There's a lonely little robin in a tree by my door,
And it waits for its mate who'll return nevermore,
So remember, please remember, that I'm lonely too.
Like a lonely little robin, I'm waiting for you.

1. When you went away, dear, you promised that you'd write,
And I thought that you would be true,
But I find the mailbox is empty day and night,
As empty as the arms that held you. CHORUS.

2. I walk in the rain down the lane we knew so well
Where we strolled together for years,
And my cheeks are wet and it's hard for me to tell
If raindrops are fallin' or tears. CHORUS.

When you went away dear, you promised that you'd write
And I thought that you would be true,
But I find my mailbox is empty day and night,
Just as empty as the arms that held you.

I used to sing that when I was about 6! Can't remember the next verse tho'. I thought it was Lonely Little Robyn.
Little Robyn (not lonely anymore)

If you still need the words to Lonely Little Robin, I have the song in ra format. (Just downloaded it on 8/12/4). You can play it and write down the words. I couldn't find the lyrics written down anyplace either. Which surprises me as the song goes back to the late 40's and early 50's. Not sure what year the Browns (Jim Edward, Maxine, and Bonnie Brown)recorded it, but they did a good job. Your memory of the chorus was better than mine...I had rememberd it somewhat differently....of course I was just a youngin back then, so memory gets warped. Also I have the ra format of Knoxville Girl that I can send you if you want. Send your email addy to:
