Subject: Gaelic speakers in Niagara Region? From: Tchaikovsky Date: 02 Mar 00 - 01:38 AM I've been doing some research on Canadian folk music and I have run across many interesting Gaelic songs. I've considered arranging them and singing them with harp. Does anyone know of any Gaelic speakers in the Niagara Region of Canada?...or even in Toronto or any other surrounding areas? I would just like to have some help with pronunciation and emphasis....just to make sure I'm not making a fool of myself. Even any advice on singing in Gaelic or resources that I could use would be helpful. Thanks! |
Subject: RE: Gaelic speakers in Niagara Region? From: GUEST,Sian in Wales Date: 02 Mar 00 - 03:54 AM There's an old gentleman in Port Colborne by the name of Douglas Burr - I don't think he speaks Scottish Gaelic but he may know someone ... or he may know enough himself to help ... I think he lives in the Portal Village Seniors complex, but - sorry - I don't have a proper address or phone number. Sian |

Subject: RE: Gaelic speakers in Niagara Region? From: Mooh Date: 02 Mar 00 - 09:12 AM Check out the Celtic College, held in Goderich Ontario every August. Contact through the Goderich Celtic Festival(Earth, Air, Fire and Water) web-site. They sometimes have instruction which would interest you, and/or could refer you to the right folks. Good luck. |

Subject: RE: Gaelic speakers in Niagara Region? From: GUEST,Jeremy Date: 03 Mar 00 - 10:18 AM I don't know how your search is going, but there are several books at the Niagara University library across the river that might be able to help you. They also have an old Gaelic dictionary in their rare book collection that might be of help to you. |

Subject: RE: Gaelic speakers in Niagara Region? From: Crowhugger Date: 05 Mar 00 - 06:51 PM If St. Cath or environs doesn't have a folklore centre, Hamilton might, plenty of music thereabouts. Only 1/2 an hour away from Niagara, isn't it? Seems an FC would know where to point you if they don't have the skill on hand. Another route: chronic care hospital volunteer co-ordinator...they'll be able to find out who has a mother tongue other than English and whether they're able-minded enough to help you...could be a great mutual benefit thing. Who knows, maybe before you know it you'll be paid to run a weekly music class! Mind you, if you like this last possibility, stay away from the public places and go for high-end private facilities. $$$, you know? |
