Subject: 'Doon by Stirling Brig''..Bodhran Song
From: Calach
Date: 02 Mar 00 - 04:17 AM

Hi Folkies
I know a lot of the words of the next song, but not enough to get away with it on stage....HELP?

Doon by Stirling Brig, the Wallace lay in hiding
As the English force frae the sooth cam riding
Loud the river Forth, 'tween them baith was girling
Girling oot o' sight, Below the brig o' Stirling

Can anyone help with the rest?
cheers....Calach

I've heard it on an Alistair MacDonalld (sp?? right name??) recording. I tried to locate it recently and couldn't, but I'll check back over the weekend, and if I find it, and you haven't got what you need, I will do my phonetic best.

Subject: Lyr Add: BRIG O' STIRLING
From: Susan A-R

Actually had it written out (alas, re typing is necessary, so it may have interesting stuff in it

Watching frae the wood, Wallace and Dumbardy (?)
As the English cam' wi' the Earl o' Surrey
Ane by ane they crossed, a' the brig was filling
Still they onward cam' o'er the Brig o' Stirling

Wallace gave the shout, with his men cam running
Stopped the English host on the Brig o' Stirling
Pressing mon (?) turned round, the brig was sma' for turning
Murray (?) cut him down on the Brig o' Stirling

All the English men ran intae each other
Nane could turn about, nane could gae much further
Some fell o'er the side in the ford was drowning
Some were left tae dee on the Brig o' Stirling

Surrey he was wild, could nae ford the river
Wished wi' all his mecht that the brig was bigger
Then he rade awa, lout the man was cursi'
Wallace and his men, and the Brig o' Stirling.

Perhaps you can fill in some more of the holes, but this should give you a start. Keep in mind, it's transcribed from my listening to the recording, so its accuracy is a bit suspect.

Thanx Susan, it's jogged my memory, plus gave me the bits I'd forgotten.
Here's the finished article (with the correct names for historical accuracy an' stuff)

The Brig o' Stirling

Doon by Stirling Brig, the Wallace lay in hiding
As the Englishmen, frae the south came riding
Loud the river Forth, between them baith was gurling
Gurling oot o' sicht, below the Brig o' Stirling

Watching frae the wood, the Wallace and the Moray
As the English Cam' wi' the Earl O' Surrey
Ane by ane they crossed, a' the brig was filling
Still they onward cam' o'er the Brig o' Stirling

Wallace gave the shout, oot his men cam running
Stopped the English host on the Brig o' Stirling
Cressingham turned round, the brig was sma' for turning
Moray cut him down on the Brig o' Stirling

All the English men ran intae each other
Nane could turn about, nane could gae much further
Some fell o'er the side in the Forth was drowning
Some were left tae dee on the Brig o' Stirling

Surrey he was wild, could nae ford the river
Wished wi' all his mecht that the brig was bigger
Then he rade awa, loud the man was cursin'
He'd lost a' his men, and the Brig o' Stirling.
