Subject: RE: Showing Music In Threads. It Works!!!!! From: wysiwyg Date: 05 Mar 00 - 08:49 AM Hold on-- I understoodimages were not to be posted as they took up too much room? Do files like this fall under that? |
Subject: RE: Showing Music In Threads. It Works!!!!! From: John in Brisbane Date: 05 Mar 00 - 08:52 AM Alison, the praise should be heaped upon the author of the original thread. But here goes my try at it for a tune from this month's Brisbane Folk Rag.
[deleted] Please don't use embedded images at Mudcat. Thanks. -Joe Offer- Check out the HTML. So simple!

Subject: RE: Showing Music In Threads. It Works!!!!! From: wysiwyg Date: 05 Mar 00 - 08:54 AM Maybe the fact that the links aren't working means we're not to do this? |
Subject: RE: Showing Music In Threads. It Works!!!!! From: John in Brisbane Date: 05 Mar 00 - 08:57 AM Praise, as I understand it the only space taken on Max's system is a line of text.
Alison, I'm a bit too tired to get it perfect, but all you do is refer to a GIF or similar at another Web Site. I've been boning up on this stuff to write a Beginner's Guide To Notation. Someone else will have all the smarts, I'm just a beginner. Regards, John |
Subject: RE: Showing Music In Threads. It Works!!!!! From: alison Date: 05 Mar 00 - 08:58 AM I did have a look at the original.. does look simple (but then I ahve no idea about what I'm doing....). I'm just attempting to put a GIF for Slattery's Mounted Fut onto Mudcat MIDIs. Praise could be right.... Max didn't want us to use links to photos etc before.. is this the same sort of thing slainte alison |
Subject: RE: Showing Music In Threads. It Works!!!!! From: John in Brisbane Date: 05 Mar 00 - 09:01 AM Praise if I were a gentleman I wouln't accuse you of having been raised on guilt. Enjoy, John |
Subject: RE: Showing Music In Threads. It Works!!!!! From: alison Date: 05 Mar 00 - 09:05 AM WOOHOOO!! I've just put a GIF onto Mudcat MIDIs. I have to clear it with Alan and Max, but that is certainly an option if we can't put things into the threads. slainte alison |
Subject: RE: Showing Music In Threads. It Works!!!!! From: katlaughing Date: 05 Mar 00 - 09:26 AM WOW!! That's fantastic! I hope Max and Alan approve, that si soemthing i would like to see used a lot. Thanks, Alan and Alison. Praise, don't worry, Max will let us know and since it is not in colour it won't take up as much as a photo, as i understand it. kat |
Subject: RE: Showing Music In Threads. It Works!!!!! From: Alice Date: 05 Mar 00 - 10:26 AM the amphi.gif is 6k. Even though gif images can be relatively small, they still take up more room than text, and the last word from Max was not to post image files in the threads. Maybe you can give us an update on the policy, Max? Alice |
Subject: RE: Showing Music In Threads. It Works!!!!! From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 05 Mar 00 - 11:23 AM Surely the simpleset thing to do is to stick the music, or whatever, up on your own website (and free webspace is there for the asking), and then just stick a link to it on the thread, with a blue clicky thing?
That way you aren't taking up any extra space on the Mudcat. And if someone can't be bothered to click on it, they surely wouldn't be bothered to read it anyway.
For example: Making War |
Subject: RE: Showing Music In Threads. It Works!!!!! From: Conrad Bladey (Peasant- Inactive) Date: 05 Mar 00 - 11:43 AM Ok to streighten this out a bit... 1. The image (I use gifs) must be located on another server. (this means that they are not taking up space here on this one- your browser fetches them from the other server. 2.You should make the image as small in terms of file size as you can. I use l-view pro as a graphics program I create a large new image then I paste the bitmap (generated by my abc program)into the new image and crop it so that it is as small as possible. I then grey scale it and then limit colors to 2 black and white. 3. Once you create the image go get a load of free server space- geocities/yahoo whereever. upload the image and get its address. 4.once you have the address of your image then you create a new thread on mudcat and install it in the message box thusly- IMG SRC="the address of your image" put all the above line into < > (If I did it here it would show up as broken image) have fun! Conrad |
Subject: RE: Showing Music In Threads. It Works!!!!! From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 05 Mar 00 - 11:59 AM Ok, let's try it now: Please don't use embedded images at Mudcat. Thanks. -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: Showing Music In Threads. It Works!!!!! From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 05 Mar 00 - 12:07 PM No, I thought it couldn't be that simple! So what did I do wrong there?
That is to say, taking into account the fact that in these matters I am as literal minded as a computer, and did exactly what you said there, Conrad, what obvious thing is there that I should have taken as read, but didn't, which resulted in it going wrong?
(As might be the case if you were telling me how to drive a car, and never bothered to tell me I needed to open the door and climb in.) |
Subject: RE: Showing Music In Threads. It Works!!!!! From: Jon Freeman Date: 05 Mar 00 - 12:22 PM If you go to http://www.mudcat.org/Detail.CFM?messages__Message_ID=126446, you will see how the idea can be extended to play the music too. I never used it in a normal thread because I too wast worried about linking to graphic files. Jon |
Subject: RE: Showing Music In Threads. It Works!!!!! From: Ed Pellow Date: 05 Mar 00 - 12:32 PM McGrath, You need the IMG SRC tag to point to the actual gif rather than the web page that it's displayed on. In your case you'd need it pointed at: http://www.macgrath.freeserve.co.uk/tunes%20gifs//making1.gif Like this... Please don't use embedded images at Mudcat. Thanks. -Joe Offer- Ed |
Subject: RE: Showing Music In Threads. It Works!!!!! From: Jeri Date: 05 Mar 00 - 01:05 PM I know in the past, Max has said we would like people not to link to images because it takes the threads a long time to load. I don't believe linking to music is quite the same thing as linking to photos, business card logos and things that don't really add information. But if it is a problem, one could always do a blue clicky to the image. |
Subject: RE: Showing Music In Threads. It Works!!!!! From: Conrad Bladey (Peasant- Inactive) Date: 05 Mar 00 - 01:27 PM If you make your images so that they only have 2 colors black and white loading will not take all that long. Conrad |
Subject: RE: Showing Music In Threads. It Works!!!!! From: Jon Freeman Date: 05 Mar 00 - 01:31 PM I don't think that the space that John and others have mentioned is an issue but the point is to load the image invoves connecting to another site and then downloading what ever size of file the graphic is which is obviously gong to slow down the loading of a thread and they can take long enough to download anyway. With all binary files (graphics, midi or whatever) I feel that the blue clicky thing is the best approach. Jon |
Subject: RE: Showing Music In Threads. It Works!!!!! From: GUEST,Alice Date: 05 Mar 00 - 01:53 PM I have posted images of sheet music on my website in the past and provided links to the page in the threads. I'd still wait to hear what Max prefers since he did make the request not to post image files directly in the threads in the past. |
Subject: RE: Showing Music In Threads. It Works!!!!! From: Jon Freeman Date: 05 Mar 00 - 02:37 PM Since this topic has cropped up, I have re-instated a little something on my web space to show how this type of idea can be used. This came about as a chalenge from Jack Campin and his modes work using midi and giffs. As it came about from a challenge from Jack in uk.music.folk. As he experessed an interest in my original email and indicated that I shoud try it, I do not feel that I am in breach of his copyright in anyway but as this work recieved nosponse from Jack I will be removing it in a couple of days. I reckon it works well but nobody seems to want to look at my ideas. It is at http://www.jonbanjo.freeuk.com/Modes/modes.htm Jon |
Subject: RE: Showing Music In Threads. It Works!!!!! From: wysiwyg Date: 05 Mar 00 - 02:53 PM John in Brisbane-- Did not get what you said: "Praise if I were a gentleman I wouln't accuse you of having been raised on guilt. Enjoy, John" Can U clarify here or at personal page? PS: AM enjoying! |
Subject: RE: Showing Music In Threads. It Works!!!!! From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 05 Mar 00 - 07:46 PM Clever stuff, Ed Pellow! I'm particularly impressed by not only recognising what I'd done wrong, but knowing how to find out what the gif in question was called, so you could carry out the operation.
But I think I'll stick with the blue clicky thing unless and until Max authorises it all. (And maybe even if he does - I like the idea sometimes of wrapping things up a little bit, so people have to make a minimal effort.) |
Subject: RE: Showing Music In Threads. It Works!!!!! From: Alan of Australia Date: 05 Mar 00 - 08:31 PM G'day, As pointed out above the graphic doesn't take up any space in the thread, however it does mean the thread could take longer to load. Linking to another site relies on that site always being there. I have posted graphics to the Mudcat MIDI site before, but the files are larger than MIDI files. Max hasn't placed any real limit on the amount of space the site can use, but that was in the context of the site being used for MIDI files. Apart from the size of the files there is no problem posting gif or jpg files to the site. I think it's best to then provide a link as Alison did to the Slattery's Mounted Fut gif, or just type the url.
Cheers, |
