Subject: Lyr Add: A LITTLE OF WHAT YOU FANCY
From: Jim Dixon
Date: 07 Mar 14 - 01:20 AM

Lyrics below are a composite of several recordings that I listened to:

A LITTLE OF WHAT YOU FANCY
Words and music by Fred W. Leigh and George Arthurs; sung by Marie Lloyd.

I never was a one to go and stint myself.
If I like a thing, I like it; that's enough.
But there's lots of people say that if you like a thing a lot,
It'll grow on you and all that sort of stuff.
Now I like my drop of stout as well as anyone,
But a drop of stout's supposed to make you fat,
And there's many a lah-de-dah madame who doesn't dare to touch it,
'Cause she mustn't spoil her figure, silly cat!

I always hold with having it if you fancy it.
If you fancy it, that's understood.
And suppose it makes you fat;
I don't worry over that,
'Cause a little of what you fancy does you good.

Now once a year I like a little holiday,
And we've always had one, my old man and me.
But the last time that we had one, he thought up a new idea
As we watched the ladies bathing in the sea.
He said: "What a man require's a change of ev'rything,
So he ought to take his holidays alone,
Right away from ev'ryday affairs," so I said very lightly,
"Well, if you'd prefer a fortnight on your own,

"I always hold with having it if you fancy it.
If you fancy it, that's understood.
But if that's your blooming game,
I intend to do the same,
'Cause a little of what you fancy does you good."

I had to catch a certain train the other day,
And I very nearly lost it, I declare.
But the guard said, "Jump up, missus," and he shoved me into first,
And I found a nice young couple sitting there.
I could see that honeymoon was stamped all over them.
I felt sorry for the lady and the chap.
So I said to them: "Excuse me; if you want to have a cuddle,
Have a cuddle, 'cause I'm gonna have a nap.

"I always hold with having it if you fancy it.
If you fancy it, that's understood.
I'll be dreaming while you spoon
That I'm on my honeymoon,
'Cause a little of what you fancy does you good."

This I believe is an English music hall song. I've seen references in the forum to a album by the Corries with the same title and am not sure if it's the same song. The only thing I know about this one is that the chorus starts with the line " A little of what you fancy does you good,". Thanks,

Frankie
