Now the nutters have had their say..

I don't recall ever having heard an Irish folk & Klezmer fusion band..
Seems so obvious, but would it work well...???

'I don't recall ever having heard an Irish folk & Klezmer fusion band..'

De Dannan did a few bits in that direction, on their 'Half set in Harlem' recording, IIRC.

There are a few, very few, venues for Irish music in Israel, but the ones I have been to seem to be enjoyed by a wide variety of people from all sorts of backgrounds.

Klezmer is not very popular in Israel, often perceived as losers' music.

Klezmer groups do occasionally break into Irish tunes, but there's only one klezmer dance type where Irish rhythms fit - the sher, which is basically a square dance done to tunes in reel time, imported from outside the Yiddish world. There is no Irish tune type like the khosidl (historically the oldest klezmer dance, asymmetric 4/4), the bulgar (3+3+2 metre), the Moldavian hora (in between 3/4 and 5/8), or the many varieties of slow tune, either derived from religious songs or built up by modal structures from Ottoman music. Jig time, either 6/8 or 9/8, doesn't exist. Also the tonality and key choices of Irish music are very different from what klezmer uses.

Ok.. I now notice this is a raised from the grave thread from nearly 20 years ago..

anyway... thanks for the detailed answer Jack...

Troll activity brought it up, deleting the troll makes it a bit disjointed. You probably need to check first, before heading there, to see if the original offer is still open. :)
