Subject: The evolving Mudcat? What will it become?
From: GutBucketeer
Date: 07 Mar 00 - 12:21 AM

Another thread prompted this thought. What is Mudcat evolving into?

As I look at Mudcat it's becoming more than just a Website.

A community A Virtual Town A Warren A family A New form of space and time.

It's expanding and evolving. We are creating new ways to show our passion. We have our gathering places, our pubs and clubs, back alleys, our centers of knowledge, portait and recording studios.

We have our sage advisors, our jesters, our outlaws, and solid citizens, our mudkids just reaching out to explore the world of music, and our stars. We now have our Confessor and mender/healer/universal friend.

We share in each others joy's and sorrows, support one another, challenge and tease. We reach concensus. We agree to disagree.

So what is the Mudcat? Where is it going? Max is the Creator of its center, the cross roads of our community. He is our urban planner and visionary. However, do planners, or parents, ever really know what they are creating?

Whew! My brain is over heating from all of this thinking stuff. After all I am an engineer. :-)

JAB

Never fear, engineer; there are administrators present who will handle all that for you! *G* Just worry about the big Spec Document on your desk!

The engineers complaint:

You guys just don't understand. If we had just a little bit more time, and money!!! We could make it soooo much better. All we have to do is just chang the specs here... (Just a little mind you and it will only increase the costs a tad) ... and there. Don't you want it right? Compromise...Never... You adminstrators just don't understand.

Anyway: here is a related thread.

On a more contemplative vein: I submit that the common threads -- vartious though they are -- which make this our center provide a stronger note of understanding than the forces in the other direction. SO whatever the direction we take turns out to be, it will be built on that commonality -- probably defending it against erosion, or finding new ways to perpetuate it, plus better teeshirts and mugs. I want a mug.

Mugs and T-shirts.... Ha... I want a cap!!! One that is pre-faded so I can wear it to jam sessions and look like I've jammin in the sun for years at festivals and campouts. One that says I'm an old time mudcatter that knows my way around the keyboard, and has seen a Mudcat campfire or two.

It is almost impossible to predict what path evolution will take... be it biological or cyberlogical(???)...

But the fight against evolution is futile, so evolve, or move aside to make room...

Kinda like the T-shirt says,
If Yer Not Living On The Edge, Yer Taking Up Too Much Space

I always prefered
If Yer Not Living On The Egde, Yer Not Likely To Get Bumped Off!

Amos, yer stuck with the mug ye got, and JAB, you cannot be capped.

I think any titles that are bestowed will slide off as though on Teflon, and that any that are sought will be denied, and that every consensus will de-consensus (?!?!) as the consensors (!?!?!) reach beyond comfort and concord to break new ground. Limits that are barriers will be transcended or shrugged aside, but boundaries will be woven.

Creative chaos without anarchy. Nice and messy and untidy. Clearest in unarticulated vision and/or articulated hindsight.

People passing each other coming and going from and to the vision quest. With lunch served around the clock.

What I hope it is for everyone is a place to tend to our wings between 3-D flights-- stretch, refit, mend, trade, and so on. And a place that lets in everyone while calling them to their best. Or I suppose we could just secede...

I think all it's missing is the Girl Scouts, but now that Caitrin is back to lift our cookies to a higher level, I'm not too concerned about that. Oh and of course the instant teleportation capability, but I know we just need to plan the right fundraiser and then I am going to be able to do, with all my 'Catfriends, all those things we now merely hint at dreamily in our personal pages. Hmm?

But a fish it shall always be, although it may spawn other kind.

This place is perfect, you can subscribe serious or silly, sober or sozzled; I can tell you what is in my heart, on my mind and in my thoughts, and you can share the same with me. I've learnt several new songs, passed a few old ones along, had a bloody good laugh, and a few tears, and I wouldn't have it any other way.

Thanks Max, without whom.... etc, etc. We take it for granted that you are there, maybe we should take a few minutes today and say thanks.

Mudcat will end as a psycological study in some medical journal. The study will be about folks interrelating sans body or voices and how left to their own devices become different than the rest of the world. Kinda like Darwin and the Galopogus(sp?) Islands. Creating gathering places, eliminating undesirables or excepting the idiosyncracies of undesirables because of their contribution to the communities. It will be the study of how various personalities came together dispite their differences and vast distances from each other. It will be about amazing creativity not fettered by social spacing or protocal nessecery when communicating in a actual versus virtual social situation. Emotions unfettered by fear of non-acceptance. ETC...

And it will be written by Max Spiegal.

Love, annap

We call those Mandatories at our house. Once they are thought, the univcerse requires that they be uttered as a necessary closure of the loop opened by what they are responding to. Mandatories never get a yellow flag because hey! SOMEBODY had to say it!

I had an old, greasy mouse pad, so as to put off getting a new one, I put a folded, two-layer Bounty paper towel over it...and noticed I seemed to never have to clean out the mouse again!...yeah...you DO have to change the paper towel once a week or so, and it looks a little silly, but NO more scraping and digging in the mouse innards!

bbc: There are still a few gems among the sludge. I have enjoyed the shanty threads, the songbook threads, and of course the Hearme sessions.

At the risk of re-starting old (and tired) debates:

The Mudcat community is becoming distributed though with different sites taking on different roles. As this continues will the Mudcat site itself become like Grand Central Station connecting different neighborhoods and activities together and providing a meeting place to touch base with one another? Will it become a village square?

Right now, it like one large folk festival in a field with jam sessions everywhere. You roam through the night and perchance stumble on a great one. You often see many others that may be Ok but aren't what you are looking for. Sometimes a friend lets you in on where a good jam will be ahead of time. Most of the time you wake up the next morning and hear about the incredible shanty sing that occurred over in the next grove. You still have a good time and promise to come back next year for more, but keep thinking... if only I had been able to find...

Even a village develops streets, neighborhoods, and communities. The question is how will these develop in the Mudcat if it is to continue to grow? distributed/centralized? formal/informal?

You are right, it is hard to find what you are interested in and contribute as the threads flow by,,, AND,,, as even the serious threads suffer from chronic thread creep (see above). Its like listening in on an old fashioned party line with 100 different conversations going at once. The content is still here though.

AND I Still LOVE THE MUDCAT and I am not complaining. :-)

JAB

bbc, I think it is part of the Evolution of the Individual Mudcatter. Spaw & I were talking about this the other day. I was even thinking of starting a thread on it. It seems there are certain phases we go through as evolvoing Mudcatters which include some things in common with one another based on the length of time we've been here. Like the cycles of life, some general terms might be the Honeymoon, the Ardent Poster/Helper, the Pick Your Poison, the Elder WiseOne, and/or the Jaded Oldster (in time as a Mudcatter, only, not in age!). Maybe I will start a thread. I am sure Art, Frank, Sandy and a few others would have something to say on it, as well as the rest of us. Jst a thought or two. kat

Every now and then some idiotic nincompoop comes up with the wonderful idea of a group mind evolving from all human beings. Until I came here, I thought of only two outcomes of this. Either the world would be run by a gigantic committee with all that implies for inertia and running round in circles, or it would be run by one preson with a compelling personality. Since then I have found three more models. One is the group run by another group who isn't really part of it, for some purpose which it is keeping to itself. One is a group mind dominated by the lowest common multiple of human interests - see the dark side of the net/web. And one is here. Which is even capable of coping well with the nasties. It's a good model, the only good model.... but I still want out of the evolving group mind. There are people out there who aren't part of this one.

Seems to me that if man ever overcame his inhumanity to man, stopped killing each other and that brought on the Messiah, that would probably piss SOMEBODY off enough for him to thy to kill the Messiah — and probably anybody else who believed he was the Messiah.

Just a passing observation....

Gargoyle, that is really out of character for you. I question here whether that really you. Are you the same gargoyle that preaches, no, bitches and moans about my supposed efforts to shape this community? Or are you simply showing your argumentative and contradictory self with this banter? Your need for conflict no doubt. Is it my job to even try to establish the future of The Mudcat? Could or should any one person do that? What are you actually asking for here?

The Mudcat is what you make it. My only job is to make it happen.

I'd certainly like to think of Mudcat as the Borg...though not so creepy and evil. You know their catchline "Your individuality will be added to our own"? That's how I like to think of The 'Cat. A large collective of people--though we are certainly not soulless drones--who come together in our quest for musical knowledge, with each member adding his or her own thoughts, feelings, likes, dislikes, and experiences to the overall Mudcat consciousness, so that we all may benefit from them. Yes even if it has to do with "morose rock song lyrics" or sticky political and philosophical issues. Even huge discourses on copyrights, which really has to do with all music, and not just "folk/blues". Limiting one's self to only one frame of mind leads to stagnation. I know most of the Catters are brought here for the folk/blues stuff, and I'm sorry if some are offended by my choice to present other types of music...I only want people to learn from my musical tastes, just as I have learned from other member's tastes. So--as most of you probably won't understand--Queen says "The time will come, then you will see how we can all be friends..."

The very fact that I agree with you should bear witness to the honor and I suggest you take a few days off and clear your mind so you can join the "Steering Committee Unifying Mudcat By Analyzing Gross Stupidity."

Bill, I understand your point and agree that this is a folk and blues site.......and I can readily see how a lot of other stuff can trample the turf. Its great to have folks with knowledge of other forms to reference to, but Schubert and Snoop Doggy aren't the focus, just rounding out sidelights......Is that about what you mean???
