There is a German version of that song, but I don't know which came first.

NRK (Norwegian broadcasting), on a late night music request radio show has played a version of this with Harry Bellefonte and a female singer (forget who) singinging this in consert. It was requested several times over a period of several days. As a beside, Burl Ives singing Jeanie with the Light Brown Hair was on the hit charts here (Norway) several years ago.

Mrrzy - your version illustrates the point I just made in another thread (Outlandish Knight), that the original punch line of the joke has been lost, and it is no longer a circular song.

Oi loikes zoider
Cos zoider makes me fart
and when Oi farts Oi gets 'ungry
and when Oi gets 'ungry, Oi works
And when Oi works, oi gets paid
And when Oi gets paid, Oi buys zoider
Cos Oi loikes zoider

I think some versions of "The House that Jack Built" can be circular, and there's another just out of reach of my (clearly befuddled) brain ... sorry can't think of it right now.

John Jacon Jingleheimer Smith comes around... so does the Flyndians, my sister's old elementary school song in Chicago...

My favorite version of this, by Ed McCurdy:

There's a hole in my bucket, dear Liza, dear Liza.
There's a hole in my bucket, dear Liza, a hole

Well mend it, dear Henry, dear Henry, dear Henry, well mend it, dear Henry, dear Henry, mend it

With what shall I mend it, deat Liza . . . with what
Well, mend it with straw, dear Henry . . . with straw

But the straw will fall out. . .
Well mend it with butter...

But the butter will melt...
Then take it to the tinsmith...

But the tinsmith costs money...
Oh well, then, don't bother...
I'll mend it myself!

some versions of "rattlin' bog" can be circular - and there are a few more. There aren't that many of them.

(now - based on past experience - several mudcatters will come along and post multiple examples to prove me wrong. or at least we can hope.)

Are there many of these 'circular' or catch-22 songs? 'Where have all the flowers gone' is the only other one which springs to mind immediately.

For GUEST: Simpleminded

THERE'S A HOLE IN MY BUCKET

There's a hole in my bucket, dear Liza, dear Liza.
There's a hole in my bucket, dear Liza, a hole

Go fix it, dear Henry, dear Henry
Go fix it, dear Henry, fix it

With what shall I fix it, deat Liza . . . with what
With a straw, dear Henry . . . with a straw

But the straw is too long . . . too long
Well cut it . . . cut it

With what shall I cut it . . . with what
With an axe . . . with an axe

The axe is too dull . . . too dull
Well sharpen it . . . hone it

On what shall I sharpen it

Whit a stone . . . with a stone
The stone is too dry . . . too dry

Well wet it . . . wet it
with what shall I wet it . . . with what

Try water . . . use water
In wath shall I fetch it . . . in what

Wasn't 'Pennsylvania Dutch' actually a German dialect? The dialect in the DT database is an old German dialect. However, in the North of Germany some dialects (Frisian) are quite close to the Frisian dialects of Dutch. 'Wenn der Topf aber nun ein Loch hat' is printed in the 1911 'Zupfgeigenhansel' with the notes that it has been taken from an older book (no date given) and that it is found 'all over Germany'. There's another song, 'Ein Loch ist im Eimer', that is quite close in lyrics and story but has a completely different tune. The differences between these two closely related German songs are the same as the differences between the version in the database and the version Diesel has posted. I'm sure that the tune in the database is the older one of the two tunes with which the song is known.

Wolfgang

Ciao a tutti.

There's another couple of lines about the straw which go:

But the straw is too long, Dear Liza, Dear Liza, the straw is to long, Dear Liza, too long.

Then cut it, Dear Henry...................etc.

Cheers

It's in the database. Mre important than that, if anyone comes up with any other truly circular songs, pleasy let me know. There's "Tree in the Hole" (called "The Everlasting Circle" in the UK - the final return part tends to be dropped in the US.) but I can't think of any others. Real songs, I mean, & truly circular. It's a pagan religious thing, you see. Jewish & Christian tend to see life as hierarchical-increasing-straight line. From the lowest to the highest. Life cycle stuff is cyclical, not circular - birth to death to next generation. But circular is different. Anyway, please think on it.

I am not arguing with you Amos as I haven't a clue over its origins but http://www.musicanet.org/robokopp/usa/dearliza.htm suggests that it is tradational German. The melody is also different to the version (?Belafonte) that I remember.

Although Belafonte recorded it, it is originally Dutch.
