Subject: 'Record Setting Cache'..wow! Treasure! From: Bill D Date: 09 Mar 00 - 09:59 AM There was this article in the Washington Post this morning, I haven't even finished reading it yet, but wanted to get it on Mudcat. Involve a 'local' fellow who has these tapes and records of bules, jazz and old-time & country music...something to look forward to, And there 'might' even be a Mudcatter who has expertise and could help...Gene? Dale Rose? |

Subject: RE: 'Record Setting Cache'..wow! Treasure! From: Dale Rose Date: 09 Mar 00 - 10:30 AM Well, I am a LOT short of that sort of collection, though there have been times that I have had boxes of records, CDs, and tapes of various configurations scattered all over the floor of what I call my computer room while looking for something. Spills out into the hallway heading toward one of the storage closets, too! Normally, (normal doesn't happen often, though)they are stored away in boxes in two closets ~~ one a walk in ~~ or stacked up in a corner by my desk. I HAVE been slowly (slowly being the working word here) divesting myself of the LP, 45, and 78 collections, but lately I have slowed down on that front. As I tape what I want from an album, I give the originals to musical friends that I know will make use of them, or to the Ozark Folk Center for the archives. Now, Gene ~~ that is another matter entirely, but I will let him speak for himself! :-))

Subject: RE: 'Record Setting Cache'..wow! Treasure! From: Bert Date: 09 Mar 00 - 10:40 AM Don't forget that there's this 'young guy' (named Max) who is starting a collection which will be made available for all of us. He takes his minidisc recorder wherever he goes, so sing for him. He also accepts recordings which are sent to him, so send him your tape or CD. And listen to some of the great stuff he has on Mudcat Radio. Bert. |

Subject: RE: 'Record Setting Cache'..wow! Treasure! From: GMT Date: 09 Mar 00 - 10:41 AM Bloody hell. I know I never throw anything away but I only have about a thousand LP's tapes and CD's altogether. Gary (chin still on floor and still dribbling). |

Subject: RE: 'Record Setting Cache'..wow! Treasure! From: Fortunato Date: 09 Mar 00 - 10:58 AM Thanks Bill, that was fun. As you probally know he's not unique. He sounds more capable than most and the collection of live recordings larger than most. Anyway, he's "out" now, I hope he doesn't regret it. I only know the Baltimore-Washington area, but there are quite a few people like him in this area, certifiable musical geniuses, hiding out here. If one wants a recorded song, ANY song, a tradtional tune or an instrument one can get it withing a few days. One simply has to know where to look. And now there's Mudcat. It is no longer arcane knowledge. I guess that's good. Regards, Fortunato (Chance)

Subject: RE: 'Record Setting Cache'..wow! Treasure! From: Stewie Date: 10 Mar 00 - 07:41 PM That's mindboggling. Here is a link to the fascinating story of a famous collector who has generously shared his collection with the world over many decades. It's a great read. In case the clicky thing doesn't work, the URL is: http://www.bluesworld.com/Bussard.html There's also a long essay about him by Marshall Wyatt who drew on Bussard's collection for his 'Violin Sing the Blues for Me'. It too can be accessed from the Bluesworld site. --Stewie. --Stewie. |

Subject: RE: 'Record Setting Cache'..wow! Treasure! From: Stewie Date: 10 Mar 00 - 08:25 PM It's a long time since I have read the article on Bussard. I just reread it and there is mention of Leon Kagarise as a one-time collecting partner of Bussard until Kagarise split because Bussard was hogging all the good finds. --Stewie. |
