I'm looking for positive songs. Spiritual is good without refference to Jesus inparticular, something more universal. I want to avoid drinking, sex, war, death etc. Things good for families with children. Thanks,

ok positive songs it is then.
From a Scottish perspective (Cos that's what I have) try the following:
Bright Blue Rose; Michael Marra, I think
Both Sides The Tweed; Dick Gaughan, tells of Scotland and England living in peace together.
Forever Eyes Of Blue; done by Scots rock/folk band RUNRIG.
The old Balgeddie Road; by Gordon Menzies of Gaberlunzie.
Scotland Will Flourish; by Roy Williamson, who wrote the new Scottish National Anthem.....Flower of Scotland.
Ok, I can hear you all saying WHAT??????? But to me these are the most positive songs in MY repetoire.
Yours from Edinburgh......Calach

"Frog Kissing", written by Buddy Kalb (who also wrote Mississippi Suqirrel Revival), recorded by Chet Atkins. Has a good moral about loving/accepting people, and is just silly enough to be fun to boot.

I'd like to help you, but most of my stuff is country and bluegrass....

We introduce "Long Black Veil" with the observation that this is often thought of as a Bluegrass song, but it isn't, really, because the chick survives.

Peter.

I take it you've already clicked on "Kids" at the top of the page? (Mind you not all the songs in there are wholly "positive" - kids often love scary and messy stuff.)

Well, this ain't exactly folk in the strictest of academic definitions, but I'm surprised no one has mentioned the songs of Bill Staines. Some titles right off the top of my head are: Lovers And Losers from "Rodeo Rose" Flowers in the Snow also from "Rodeo Rose" Faith of Man from "Sandstone Cathedrals" (I think) Buffy's Quality Cafe (album?) All God's Critters (album?) Ol' Pen "Rodeo Rose" (I think) Down the Road (either Sandstone Cathedrals, or Rodeo Rose, I'm not sure) Aw heck, both albums "Rodeo Rose" and "Sandstone Cathedrals" are good.

Two that come to mind for me are Stan Roger's "Mary Ellen Carter", and Gordon Bok's "Turning Toward the Morning" each in its own way expressing hope.

How about "Touch of the Master's Hand". I don't know who wrote it, but Sally Rogers sings it.

There are a couple of Bob Franke songs I really like: "Thanksgiving Eve" and "Hard Love".

These songs are intensely spiritual without being explicitly Christian (or any other sect for that matter). The above songs are all on DigiTrad.

Then there's John Gorka's "Branching Out", which is not on DigiTrad, but I seem to recall seeing it somewhere on the 'net. . .

A good one which a guy at the club I go to 'owns' is 'Sister Josephine'. Words are in the DT, but no chords. I'll see if I can add those (and poss a tune too). Very very funny song. Another funny one is 'The Barrel' (aka 'The Sicknote', 'The Bricklayer's Song', or ' Why Paddy's not at work today').

Grab.

For the feminists amongst us:

"Did Jesus Have a Baby Sister" - by Carolyn McDade?

A lot of non-feminists might not find it to be positive. I always wonder if it offends Christians. My mom sings it and she hasn't been booed off the open mike with it yet...people even request it. I guess for some people at least, it's a fair question with no clear answer. It's always in her Xmas set. I guess after "Christmas in the Trenches" which she can barely complete without choking, and sometimes has to strum/pick while reassembling composure, everyone's in the mood for a lift.

Did anyone mention Cris Williamson's "Song of the Soul" yet?

I love this thread. There are so many darned sad songs: war, lost love, lost homeland, lost hope, it can take some serious (?!!) thought to come up with balanced sets.

CH

Forgive the overt, perhaps self congratulatory, commercial sounding tone of this addition, but I'd like to submit one of my songs which I get requested to sing entitled "When We Rise." It too is an obviously spiritual sort of song, and has been recorded on my tape "Down County Road 1045." Copies are avaliable from Old Sod Shanty Music, 1409 New Jersey St. Lawrence, KS 66044. End of commercial
