Last weekend I went to the North Texas Irish Fest and most enjoyed Seamus Kennedy's songs and jokes. Bought 4 of his CD's, but none had the words to Barley Malt (a/k/a Here's to the Barley Malt or Good Luck To the Barley Malt). He sings it while downing a pint (of Guinness, of course).... Does anyone have the words ?? Highly recommend catching Seamus in concert any chance you have..... --- Bill

From the SCA Minstrel website you can click onto Bell's 'Ancient Poems, Ballads, and Songs of the Peasantry', 1857. And "The Barley-Mow Song" is the correct title for that version.

Thirty-five years ago (wow!) I remember hearing a slightly different version of the song posted above at a sing-around. Never head it before or since. It went something like

I've drunk out of the pint pot, good luck to the Barley Mow
The pint pot, half a pint pot and the nipperkin-oh
Here's good luck, good luck, good luck to the Barley Mow.

I've drunk out of the quart pot, etc

As I remember, the chorussy bit had two variants, sung alternatively. And the singer went on to boast of having drunk, not only from the half-barrel and barrel but also the river, sea and ocean.

Any one got any details?

Here are a couple of more measurements.

A firkin = 1/4 barrel
A kilderkin = 1/2 barrel.

Can work those in too if you don't run out of wind.

Seamus, you may not want to put your email address on the net (and I checked to see if it was on the program of the NTIF, to no avail) so here's mine : erskineb@methodisthealth.com I'm a working member of the Memphis Acoustic Music Association, and would love to bring you here for a concert when you're passing through. I don't know how you have time to play the net, but would be glad to hear from you on email. Your 4 performances were all great. Sorry to report that none of our group had any "wee little squirts", but it wasn't for lack of laughter. It must be exhausting to sing both sets of verses (in both dialects) to "Loch Lomond" and "Red is the Rose" at the same time THANKS ALSO TO ALL OTHERS WHO RESPONDED ! ----Bill 3-14-00

I learned this song back in the 1960s in the UK. Here's how I remember it...

Here's good luck to the pint pot
Good luck to the barley mow
Jolly good luck to the pint pot
Good luck to the barley mow
To the pint pot, half a pint, gill pot half a gill quarter gill nipperkin and a brown bowl
Here's good luck, good luck good luck to the barley mow.

Add the following sequentially, each time around.

Quart pot
Half gallon
Gallon
Half barrel
Barrel
Barmaid
Landlord
Slavey
Drayer
Brewer
Company

BTW as a drinking game, the tradition was that whoever screwed up a verse bought a round for the company.

I remember this song being part of Dick Gaughin's repertoire, circa 1970.

I uploaded my version of this song on YouTube about seven years ago:
Good Luck to the Barley Mow
but I see from some of the variants in this thread, there were some verses I could have added, but just doing the ones I did was tricky enough. I might give it another go with the extra ones now.
