Subject: St Pat's Day in the Mudcat Tavern
From: alison
Date: 16 Mar 00 - 07:39 AM

Top o' the morning to youse all...

it's 20 minutes to St Pat's here in Oz..... so I thought I'd get the place set up......

there's gallons of vile black stuff .... the jello pit is full of green jello... (with a few mandarin chunks to keep everyone happy)........

plenty of room on stage for the band, (any takers???? bags I play whistle)......... enough room for some step dancing.....

Big Mick is in the kitchen whipping up a big pot of champ..... god knows where he found all those spuds.. and I really don't want to know.

Only Irish songs today people.. or it'll be the shilleleagh (how the hell do you spell that anyway?) for you.......

I'll start the songs...

"then success to bold St Patrick's fist , he was a saint so clever
he gave the snakes an awful twist and banished them forever."

slainte

alison

P.S. there'll be a prize for the best leprechaun outfit....

Subject: Lyr Add: THE HILLS OF CONNEMARA
From: Dave (the ancient mariner)
Date: 16 Mar 00 - 08:36 AM

I'll bring a couple of cases of Black Bushmills and drink a toast to all hands today; cause I'm bloody working midnights on St Patrick's day. Well with the Irish breakfast I plan, my diet is shot to hell. THE HILLS OF CONNEMARA...Yours, Aye. Dave

Gather up the pots and the old tin can
The mash, the corn, the barley and the bran
Run like the devil from the excise man
Keep the smoke from rising Barney

Swing to the left and swing to the right
The Excise men will dance all night
Drinking up the tay till the broad daylight
In the hills of Connemara

RPT 1st verse as chorus

A gallon for the Butcher a quart for Tom
A bottle for poor old father John
To help the poor old dear along
In the hills of Connemara

Chorus

Stand your ground it is too late
The Excise men are at the gate
Glory be to Paddy, they're drinking it Nate
In the hills of Connemara

Chorus

I'll join you all today, since I'll be serving beer instead of partaking in it on the day itself (at the Irish Embassy!!)

An easy one for early in the day...

Do you love an apple?
Do you love a pear?
Do you love a laddie with curley brown hair?
Oh still, I love him,
I can't deny him
I'll be with him wherever he goes

Before I got married, I'd sport and I'd play
But now the cradle, it gets in me way...

He stood on the corner, a fag in his mouth
Two hands in his pocket, he whistled me out

Before I got married, I wore a black shawl
But since I got married I wear bugger all

Carry on!

After a 4 hour rehearsal last night, and still a full day before St. Pat's, you'd think I'd not be wantin' to partake....

Someone draw me a Guiness please. And it's only 8am. It's gonna be a long day.

I'm not sure what I was thinkin'. Four gigs, and three of them are an hours drive seperated.

Ok, I'll need more than Guinness...how's about a shot of Tully please... with a Blackbush chaser.

alison and Mick, it's great to be here in the tavern again with you all... it's been a long time! I've got my latest set of lyrics to memorize taped to my shower wall... Terence's Farewell To Kathleen

So, my Kathleen, you're going to leave me
All alone by myself in this place,
But I'm sure that you'll never deceive me,
Oh, no, if there's truth in that face.
Though England's a beautiful country,
Full of illigant boys, oh, what then--
You'ld never forget your poor Terence,
You'll come back to old Ireland again.

So, I've come back to the old Mudcat again. Lots of fresh new faces around.

How do you like this costume idea? No, that's not me in the photo, that's Eileen Martin. My outfit's green, of course, I wouldn't have a purple one on St. Patrick's day. I can't decide. Should I go with the riverdance look or not?

Subject: Lyr Add: THE KNIGHT AND THE UNICORN
From: MMario
Date: 16 Mar 00 - 11:11 AM

*envious glance* must be nice to be able to GET gigs....*sigh*

This is by a SCAdian by the name of Bertram of Bearington, whom I have been trying to track down for a number of years. maybe this will scare him up....

THE KNIGHT AND THE UNICORN
by Bertram of Bearington

There was a knight, a lusty knight, a randy knight was he,
He had eleven mistresses and bastards thirty-three...
He indulged in ev'ry excess, in each licentious whim,
So you should have seen his jaw drop when a unicorn chose him!

Please go away my gold-maned friend, be gone I do declare!
My reputation will be shot with all the ladies fair.
I fear you've got the wrong man, of my friend with coat so fine...
I haven't been a virgin since I reached the age of nine!

I've led a very lusty life, summer winter fall or spring
I have no peers in "swords-manship", I will rut with anything!
So go away fair unicorn, if not I'll be grief-stricken --
The rampant cock upon my shield will turn into a chicken!

The ladies will reject me thinking I'm just bravado.
There must be twenty other knights with chastity their motto.
So go away fair unicorn, please leave me alone...
The ladies will not lay with me with you for chaperone!

Please go away my gold-maned friend, be gone and do not tarry.
You'll probably find the man you seek up in the monastery.
No wait, they're not the kind of monk who are celibately sleeping,
Instead of Mass and priestly vows, it's mistresses they're keeping!

The unicorn said not a word but with a soft "tap tap"
She curved her hooves around his legs, put her head upon his lap.
The knight looked in her deep brown eyes and said, "Why me? why you?"
Then the unicorn demurely said, "My lord, I'm horny too!"

Have you heard about the Irish boomerang?

It doesn't come back, it just sings songs about how much it wants to.

Ok, the words! But I still feel a bit leery about putting lyrics in the songbook that ain't mine. Only the music is, but here you go:

The Wild Geese--The Wild Geese--'tis long since they flew
O'er the billowy ocean's bright bosom of blue;
For the foot of the false-hearted stranger had curst
The shores on whose fond breast they'd settled at first;
And they sought them a home afar off o'er the sea,
Where their pinions, at least, might me thainless and free.

CHORUS: (this part IS mine, can you tell?)

The Wild Geese flee
The Wild Geese flee
The Wild Gees flee across the sea
(2x)

The Wild Geese--The Wild Geese--sad, sad was the wail
That followed their flight on the easterly gale;
But the eyes that had wept o'er their vanishing track
Ne'er brightened to welcome the wanderers back;
The home of their youth was the land of the slave,
And they died on that shore far away o'er the wave.

The Wild Geese--The Wild Geese--their coming once more,
Was the long-cherished hope of that desolate shore,
For the loved ones behind knew it would yet be free,
If they flew on their white pinions back o'er the sea;
But vainly the hope of these loved ones burned,
The Wild Geese--the Wild Geese--they never returned.

The Wild Geese--the Wild Geese--hark! hear ye that cry?
And marked ye that white flock o'erspreading the sky?
Can ye not read the omen? Joy, joy to the slave,
And gladness and strength to the hearts of the brave;
For Wild Geese are coming at length o'er the sea,
And Eirinn, green Eirinn, once more shall be FREE!

(lyrics by Michael Joseph Barry, Music by Mbo)

My curse is on ye, Sweenie
Ye have me fairly robbed
For ye sit there by the fireside
Yer pipe stuck in yer gob
Ye sit there bu the fireside
from the cold daylight 'til dawn
And ye never will bestir yerself
To plow the rocks o' Bawn.

there's a dear little plant that grows in our isle
twas St Patrick himself sure that set it
and the sun on its raiment in splendour did shine
and the dew from his eye ofttimes wet it
It shines through the bog, through the muck and the mireland
and they called it the dear little shamrock of Ireland

the dear little shamrock
the sweet little shamrock
the dear little, sweet little
shamrock of Ireland

........ must remember not to drink this vile black stuff again.... it's making drag out really old songs.....

Praise comes in confidently and stands the boys a round. Is that a gigbag she's got? No? But WHY is she carrying a bedroll slung over one shoulder? She wanders over to Sorcha, best bud Sorcha...

"Sorch," she says, "I still can't sleep. I give up. I'm here for the cure, and the consequences."

"It's about time, love," says wise and merry Sorcha. "What's your plan?"

"It's very simple. Would you be so kind as to drink me under the table, and then, just as I start to slide down to the floor, flip out the bedroll for me to land on... I'll sleep the night away dreaming dreams of Ireland, and all my friends around~~~ a bit of an Irish wake for the awake, while yet she lives, eh? And none the wiser! Is that not a fine plan?"

Lovely weather there near Cushendall, alison. Frankly I would trade that rain for what I have coming down outside my window right now.... SNOW!! Lots of it, thick and fast. There will be a scary drive over the mountain pass to Butte for the St. Patrick's Day festivities. It is not yet the 17th in Montana, although you have been enjoying the day for a long time in Australia.
I think I will stay here dry and warm in the Mudcat Tavern.

Well, I suppose for Saint Pats I can have an E-beer, without killing myself (the oul congenital liver trouble - remember?) So, what the hell, an E-Jamisons chaser and Larry is up on his feet, eyes closed, pipes caught by Genie before they land at his feet.

Oh Danial do not cross the moor, Oh Danial I bid ye stay
I pray ye not stray from my side, til round us breaks the day
For the sun has shed, her last long bloom, and the sea does loudly roar
Tonight he will surely meet his doom, who crosses yon, Grannemoor.

Oh father pray don't reprimand, for 'tis careless I have been,
all though its true, just as ye-ve said, that last night these sights were seen
the sun is gone, the night is long the sea does loudly roar,
but I must go and seek my lamb on the mighty grannemoor.

He took his lantern in his hand, and Dewey he left behind.
He crossed that barren stretch of land, his frighted lamb to find,
but as he struggled with the heath, the torrents down did fall,
and our young Daniel sank beneath the bog of Grannemoor.

His father when he heard the news, he bitterly did cry,
He says I've lost all mine to lose, and I'd rather now to die,
they took him in to comfort him, but he ner saw springtime more,
and they laid him down, in that cold ground, of the breast of grannemoor

And now the dewey people say, they still can hear the cries,
of their young comrade once so brave, who now in his cold bed lies
and when the kneel at night to pray, they say one ave more,
(Spoken with emphasis...)For the boy whose bones are bleaching white, neath the bog of Grannemoor.
,

Happy St. Pats all,
Larry

Just in time for StPaddy's, the bruises are turning green. What luck?
How's about a pint of the black throat oil?

I'll tell my mar when I go home
The boys won't leave the girls alone
Wreck my hair and stole my comb
But tha's all right til I go home
She is handsome, she is pretty
She is the belle of Dublin city
She is courted 1..2..3
Please can you tell me who is he
Albert Mooney says he loves her
Other boys are fighting for her
There up at the door with a ring of the bell
Saying Oh my true luv are you well?
Out she comes as white as snow
Rings on her fingers and bells on her toes........

jingling to her spot FAR from the projectiles in the jello-pit....Elle

For those who did'nt see the other thread, I passed an audition today for a place in the choir of the Wagnerian Association, a first-level group in Argentina and will be singing with the main orchestras and (possibly) with the Berliner Philarmonic during their visit.
But the "amazing" thing was that I performed Amazing Grace, following advice from Mudcatters, and that's a little exotic for them, and it delighted them.
OK .. now relax .. (berp) Where's the other pint ? Yes, Guinnes - or anyone you recommend.
Un calido (30 C degrees) abrazo - Andrés

Escamillo, El Patron! Que rico, rico rico!!! Un embrazo ENORMO para ti!!!

MM, I dunno -- I heard a story once about the Hepburn set getting hepped to the question "Who do you think you are!" and making people answer it, and laughing their asses off at the answers that came out -- big stars walking around imaging themselves to be yet other big stars...

So you can be Bill Gates or Harley Davidson his own self, if you want!!! How about Twiggy ?? You could be Thomas Aquinas or Thomas Edison...take yer pick, big guy.

(tunes up old Martin>

Oh, see! The fleet footed hosts of men!
They come with faces wan.
From farmer's hut, and fisher's cot
Far beyond the banks of Bann
They come with a vengeance in their eyes!
Too late, too late are they
For young Roddy McCorley goes to die
On the Bridge of Tooms today...

(Slugs down first pint of horrid brown stuff).

Welcome ceits.....I've been following your "progress" on the other thread and I'm glad you've decided to stay. There's plenty of good friendship and good music here and we're glad to have you at the 'Cat. As you notice with Andres (escamillo) we are very supportive of our own! Some of Andres and Alice's threads on the singing voice have been quite wonderful and they are both active participants in the fun had here too.

Join up and you drop the guest tag and also have a personal page and other things...have a good time and ask anything you wish. Believe me there are lots of people to help you out. Search some old threads and add to new ones. Have that drink on Mario too (he's a tightwad and rarely buys).

Welcome.

Hey, any good scotspersons out there? I am now the (proud?) hopefully temporary owner of a Border Collie/German Shepherd Cross puppy, only about 6 wks old. This (stoopid?) woman let her B C get bred by a Shepherd, and then gave away the puppies too soon. A boy I know took one of them, and was taking it to work with him to look after her, but his boss said that had to stop, so as we speak, I have a crying baby in my lap that really needs to be with her mama. Plan to take her to the Society AM, because I cannot have 3 dogs, and cannot deal with a Border Collie bitch!! Been here 2 hrs, and already running everybodys railroad! Praise gets up again wearily. "Well that was nice while it lasted," she says sarcastically, rolling up the bedroll. "I know all Biskit needs is a good thorough FUGging but I'm just too tired to do it, he'll have to go FUG himself."

She and Sorcha cackle wildly as Praise leaves. And says over her shoulder, "Maybe Mbo will set the undies flyin' proud once more, since my other staunch ally is asleep and Hardiman too. Whatever!! FUG you vey much, all!"

I don't like the black stuff, though I have some Jamesons somewhere behind all the Metaxas bottles, but at least I'm having curry tonight, so that'll do to honour my Irish grandfather (well he was born in India -you can always tell a Brummie by the shamrock in his turban). He played it from the nighttime to the peaceful early morn
He soothed the soul of psychos and the men who had the horn
And they all looked very happy in the morning

Sad to say I must be on my way
Buy me a beer or whisky cuz I'm going far away
Sing a song of time long gone
But they knew that they'd be seein' him again

I was reminded by the reference to Mary Macs Wedding of a weekend party we had to warm our new (300 year old) house in Brittany. Loads of our mates had come from near and far to help with the party including one Al Groat, a bodhran beating verse wielding friend from Tipperary. Over the course of the weekend much grog had been scoffed and many a fine song and tune performed for the pleasure of our friends and new neighbours. Al Groat, whose repertoire had been drawn upon all weekend, and was somewhat past his peak started to sing Johnny jump up. He has a incredible ability to remember verse after verse of even the most epic ballad, in incredible states of blatant drunkenness. Well half on hour latter he arrived at the end of said epic ballad, Johnny Jump up. Only to waver on his stool for a few seconds then cry, " hey, I have remembered another one" at which he restarted Johnny Jump Up. He only got as far as the bit where " I fell to the ground and I couldn't get up" when someone gave him a gentle shove and he to fell to the ground, where we covered him with a blanket and he stayed until morning.

I really shouldn'r drink you know, but, its expected on St. Patricks Day. Problem is, I get sentimental on this day.. One day as I strolled along Broadway
A vision came into my view
A vision of sadness and beauty
A beauty thats given to few.
There was I in the land of the stranger
There was she, I'd not seen her before
But, somehow I knew she was Irish
A sweet Coleen from Erins green shore...

I boldly approached this fair maiden
I asked her the cause of her woe
She said "I am crying for Ireland
The land where the green shamrocks grow."

Another Harp please..

Guinness in hand, SDShad contributes another of MacGowan:

I sat for a while by the gap in the wall
Found a rusty tin can and an old hurley ball
Heard the cards being dealt, and the rosary called
And a fiddle playing Sean Dun na nGall
And the next time I see you we'll be down at the Greeks
There'll be whiskey on Sunday and tears on our cheeks
For it's stupid to laugh and it's useless to bawl
About a rusty tin can and an old hurley ball

So I walked as day was dawning
Where small birds sang and leaves were falling
Where we once watched the row boats landing
By the broad majestic Shannon

Off to hear pipers and drink Guinness! Slainte!

Thank you Alice, I'll tell you a secret. I have a natural ease for understanding and talking foreign languages (my father spoke Spanish, French, English, Italian, and some German), then how could I exploit that handicap for singing ? Singing in Spanish in a Latin American country ? Singing in Italian in a city full of italian singers ? No! sing in a decent English or German, and you'll be out of the mass ! That's why I prefer English and USA songs and negro spirituals when performing solos. Those who are British or Americans will be glad, and those who are not, will be amazed ! HAHAHAAAAAA !!
Well, no kidding, I really love those songs in the English language, for the language and for the music, and would sing them in any place ! But what I've said above is a little true too, for me and many singers, amateurs and professionals, don't you think so ?.:)

Andrés, regarding singing in English, I am sure you know the difficulty is that the language is one of the worst for keeping an open sound (and the best is Italian, of course). I am sure you know this from your training, as well as the sound of all the languages you have learned. When I was 8 years old, my family had two Cuban refugees come to live with us for a year and half, a brother and sister. I remember the sound of the language as they spoke it, and I studied it in school, as well as travelling in Mexico and Central America. It has been too long since I have spoken Spanish, so I've lost any fluency I had. What I did keep, which helped me in learning to sing, was the open vowels of Spanish. It helps even in singing English, because so many English speakers stop the sound on the roof of their mouth, sing through their nose, or hang onto the consonants instead of the vowels. The English words sound like so much hissing and spitting (sounds of s, t, th, k, ch) compared to Italian or Spanish.

To be able to sing the English songs will, I am sure, bring much attention to your skill.

Alice

Andres

Keep Your Hand On That Plough is a simple but powerful song. There is a version in the DT but the midi with it is in a major rather than the minor key that I learned it in.

Here is the song as I learned it -- it may have been from an old Mahalia Jackson 33, I am not sure:

Keep Your Hand On That Plow, Hold On

Em--------------------A7-----------
Mary wore three links of chain
Em--------------------------A7------
And every link bore Jesus' name
Em---------------------------------B7
Keep your hand on that plow,
Em------
Hold on

Chorus:
A7-------
Hold on,
A7--Em------
Hold on
Em----------B7-------------------
Keep your hand on that plow,
B7-----Em
Hold on

Paul and SIlas bound in jail
Had nobody for to pay their bail
Keep your hand on that plow, hold on

They began to pray and shout
The walls fell down and they walked right out
Keep your hand on that plow, hold on

Now what set Paul and Silas free
Is good enough for a  sinner like me
Keep your hand on that plow, hold on

I don't have a MIDI interface, but I can send you a small .mp3 of it if you wish -- give me an email address.

Warmest regards,

Amos

Sorcha, I'm glad to see that my English is good ! Credit to professor Mrs.Alice Vazquez from Instituto Cambridge de Buenos Aires, and credit to my parents. And to the Mudcat too, because with all this daily activity of reading and writing, I'm improving a lot. Alas, I still don't know what a POSSUM is, but I'm afraid to ask.

Praise, yes, my native language is Spanish. However, Buenos Aires has always been an international city. Some of my school mates spoke Italian with their grandparents, some spoke English, German, Arab and Russian with them. I think it's similar to New York in this regard.

Thanks Mbo ! Thanks too to you Amos, you may send that MP3 to escamillo@ciudad.com.ar

Alice, I absolutely agree - for some reason Italians have such a rich singing tradition. However, they always teach "aperto ma coperto"- OPEN BUT COVERED. When that special sound is obtained, firm but not strident, clear but caressing, then vowels of French, English, Italian and others get closer and can be treated similarly. If one is careful enough to not sing through the nose or open mouth, and concentrate "in the mask" (that's the natural resonance of the front bones of the face), then English vowels get easier. I have listened carefully to British classical singers, and although I would never sound exactly like them, I can reasonably approach that sound. Perhaps when I grow up ! I love that "singing voice" conversations, thanks for bringing up the subject.
Un abrazo - Andrés
