Subject: Trying to think of a song
From: Barky
Date: 16 Mar 00 - 05:34 PM

OK. As most of you heard, I think, I'm going to be singing something on the radio next week. Scary for me, funny as all hell for you guys. But I need help. I don't really know what to sing! I was thinking of Greensleeves. What do y'all think? Thanks!

You should sing whatever you sing when you are most relaxed, whatever you sing that has notes you can hit and hold strongly, whatever you sing that lets you grin while you're singing.

What songs do you know that fit that description? Which ones would be more fun to do on the radio than anywhere else? Which ones would let us see you as yourself?

See, Praise... that's the problem! I can't hit notes and hold them very strongly... I'm not a particularly good singer.... I'm more of an instrumentalist.. =)

Personally, I think Greensleeves is a baddy to try to sing because of the 1/2 tones and accidentals. Try something EZ, like I bought a cat that is in full steps

Thanks 'Bo-ster.... (that doesn't really work very well, does it? *BG*) I won't do Are You Ready To Rock, I don't remember it very well. OH well. I still might attempt Greensleeves... that's one of the first songs I learned on guitar, so I've been singing/playing it for about three years.

Greensleeves is a great song and a great tune. If you want another set of words which are sung to the tune try OH SHEPHERD, OH SHEPHERD

The important thing is to sing what you know and feel comfortable with, and that is saying something you feel like saying. Have a picture in your mind.

What jumps into your head when you're walking down the street or just passing time? What songs do you sing absent-mindedly while your doing other things? Those would be good places to start. Whatever you sing, sing it with love and passion and you'll be just fine.

You're right, Mbo. That would probably be a lot of fun. I'm wrapping things up at work right now, so if you want to start one, I'll add to it sometime tomorrow from home. If you haven't started one by then, I'll start it myself. We'll be heading out tonight to celebrate St. Patricks day and so I won't be online. All the best.

What the sad thing about those two songs really is, Joe, is that NEITHER of them consist of really just one note. Johnny One-Note starts out "Poor Johnny one-note" going down in a kind-of jazzish scale. Oh well. Although One-Note Samba does start on F and stays on F for a long time, then switches to Bb for a long time then changes more.....

Barky, Do you know "Constipation Blues?" Not heard on the radio quite enough. A few words and a lot of grunting to 12-bar blues. A little comic delivery and you're a star.

Caution: this advice is certaily worth what you paid for it!

But seriously, if you're dead nervous, go with something that's a no-brainer for you, and sing it with all your heart. Make sure to have a copy of the lyrics in large print, 16 point or so, in case your nerves give you a brain fade. Practise a few times with the lyrics in front of you if you're used to doing it from memory.

If you're having trouble identifying that no-brainer song, here's a little "let's pretend" to help you get on track. Let's pretend that now, RIGHT NOW, while you're reading this, in walks the musician or producer of your dreams with a request for you to audition for them RIGHT NOW. Don't think, man, just sing and sing well -- you want that dream job, don't you? That song'll probably work for you on the radio.

Another option: get a vocalist. If you're in the Toronto area, I'll do it. No kidding. The only condition is that since we've never played together before, eye contact must be available during the song. Even Buffalo, since I have friends in St Cath who'll surely put me up to cut down the driving time.

That's nice dad... Anyway, Mbo. (Just kidding dad! You know I love ya!)

(One of Phantom's letters to Andre and Firmin):
"Gentlemen, I have now sent you several notes of the most amiable nature, detailing how my theater is to be run. You have not followed my instructions. I shall give you one last chance.
Christine Daae has returned to you, and I am anxious her career should progress. In the new production of "Il Muto". you will therefore cast Carlotta as the Pageboy, and put Miss Daae in the role of Countess. The role which Miss Daae plays calls for charm and appeal. The role of the Pageboy is silent - which makes my casting, in a word, ideal.
I shall watch the performance from my normal seat in Box Five, which will be kept empty for me. Should these commands be ignored, a disaster beyond your imagination will occur!!!
I remain, Gentlemen, your obedient servant,
O.G."

Beat that for memorization! =0) (There's a challenge for ya!

Barky...well...I CAN'T ARGHHH!!! Sorry, I love The Phantom of the Opera, but I'm much more well versed in Cats, Joseph and The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, and Les Miserables. Here's my off the track re-challenge!

The naming of Cats is a difficult matter, it isn't just one of your holiday games. You amy think at first I'm as mad as a hatter when I tell you a cat must have 3 different names. First of all, there's the name that the family uses daily, such as Peter, Augustus, Alonzo, or James....um...DARN! George or Bill Bailey, but all of them sensible everyday names. There are fancier names, if you think they sound sweeter, some for the gentlemen, some for the dames, such as Plato, Demeter, Electra, and Admetus, but all of them sensible everyday names. But above and beyond there's still one name left over, and that is the name which you never will guess. The name that no human research can discover, but the cat himself knows and never forgets! When you see that a cat's in rapt concentration, the reason I tell you, is always the same! His mind is engaged in a rapt concentration on the thought, on THE THOUGH, on THE THOUGHT of his name...his effable, ineffable, efanineffable, deep, and inscrutable, singular name name name name...

Barky I NEVER thought of that before! No...stunod is and old Italian dialect word that my Italian great-grandparents used to say. It's kind of a family tradition to carry it on. It basically means the same thing as CRS, going senile, losing your memory (ALL ALONE IN THE MOOONLIGHT...) etc etc. There are other words too..but noone seemed much interested in them.
