Subject: Brewers Phrase and Fable From: Jon Freeman Date: 17 Mar 00 - 12:00 AM I was chatting to Jeri earlier and I mentioned the Brewers Phrase and Fable was a good source of finding out about expressions. I have just found this online resource: http://www.bibliomania.com/Reference/PhraseAndFable/ I think it might be of interest t other people here. Jon |

Subject: RE: Brewers Phrase and Fable From: Liz the Squeak Date: 17 Mar 00 - 02:12 AM It is indeed an excellent book, I use it a lot myself. Better though is Shakespeares Insults for the office - great to tell your boss that he is mewling and puking in his mothers arms, and get away with it because it's Literature! LTS |

Subject: RE: Brewers Phrase and Fable From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 17 Mar 00 - 02:55 PM That's a brilliant resource, especially since the one I've got is buried under a heap of book somewhere in the house. But even when I find it, having a hypertext version will be really handy.
I'm glad it's the 1894 version - the modernised editions just lack the full quirkiness. |
