I was chatting to Jeri earlier and I mentioned the Brewers Phrase and Fable was a good source of finding out about expressions. I have just found this online resource: http://www.bibliomania.com/Reference/PhraseAndFable/

It is indeed an excellent book, I use it a lot myself.

Better though is Shakespeares Insults for the office - great to tell your boss that he is mewling and puking in his mothers arms, and get away with it because it's Literature!

Brewer's is the top of my "Stranded on a desert island" list. I haven't been without mine since 1968.

That's a brilliant resource, especially since the one I've got is buried under a heap of book somewhere in the house. But even when I find it, having a hypertext version will be really handy.

I'm glad it's the 1894 version - the modernised editions just lack the full quirkiness.
