Subject: Blind Willie McTell - 'That'll never hap

Anyone have the words to a Blind Willie McTell song called something like "That'll Never Happen To Me"? (I might have the name wrong since all I've is someone's take-off of the original.)

Thanks.

The song title is 'That will never happen no more'. It's on 'Last Session' on Prestige/Fantasy. The album has been reissued on CD and should be fairly easy to obtain.

Gee! I didn't know McTell did that one. I associate it with Blind Blake. I will have to look into that album!

I've been doing this song for years, but the version I learned was from Dave Von Ronk. Always tho't it was a BW McTell tune.

My memory's been know to be pretty fallable, but the words as I remember them are:

I met a girl in a caboret
Pretty poppa, are you going my way
I meant to know what it's all about
You know, she took me home just to kick me out
Broke my nose and she split my chin
Don't let me catch you 'round here again
Whippin' through the kitchen and out through the door
You know she beat me with a chair until my head got sore
CHORUS: But that'll never happen no more
No, that'll never happen no more.

Verbal scatting thru a verse.

I went to a party the other night
Got into drinkin', I was feeling all right
Lit up a reefer and I soaked up some gin
I was sittin' there waiting for the the fun to begin.
Little gal stepped up to me
Said 'Come on, daddy, let's make whoopee
Well I woke up in an empty bed
You know my pockets were empty and there's an ache in my head.

CHORUS:

instrumental break

Lived in Chicago in the winter and fall
Caused me to wear my overalls
Well I got sick and it was my fault
I was drinking tequila and leaving the salt
Met a gal in a big mink coat
Fancy car and a 40-foot boat
She pulled a gun and she took my dough
You know I didn't holler and I didn't get sore

CHORUS:

As I said, my memory isn't the best anymore, so maybe somebody has a better version of this. It's a great song, tho'.

cheers

david

I have always known this as a Blind Blake tune, Are y'all sure McTell recorded it? Eddy Walker from Darlington also sings a great version of this song.

I haven't come across the McTell version, but Blake (1927 Pm 12497) uses a couple of different verses to the ones David has typed out, so they probably are from McTell.

From a quick look at Goodrich and Dixon, McTell made no pre-war recordings of 'That'll never happen no more'. I have not heard the Blind Blake recording but, since he died in the early 1930s, if there was any influence it must have been from Blake to McTell. McTell's recording on 'Last Session' is quite short - only 2 verses. This is what I can decipher:

Spoken intro: 'That'll never happen no more'? That's another one of my little old original jives. See I, I figured that out in Chicago - sometime I use Atlanta, sometime I don't.

Met the gal at the caberet
Pretty papa I'm a-goin' your way
Man knew what it was all about
That is why he went and threw me out
Broke my nose, split my chin
'Don't let me catch you in my castle (?) again'
Beat me from the kitchen back to the door
He beat me with a chair till my head got sore
But that'll never happen no more
That'll never happen no more

Went to Chicago winter and fall
Got to make your date in your overalls
Got broke, wasn't my fault
I had to eat my pork chop without any salt
Met a girl, pigmeat spur (?)
Big fat ? followed her
Took a (my) gun, took my dough
I didn't even holler and I wouldn't get sore But that'll ...

Play it boy (instrumental)

That'll never happen to me no more (2)

The McTell version Stewie has posted looks to be pretty close to the Blake version:

I met a girl at the caberet
Said, "Pretty papa, I'm goin' your way."
Her man know what it all about,
Waiting home just to throw me out.

Broke my nose, an' split my chin.
"Don't let me catch you here again."
He whipped from the kitchen, back to the door,
He beat me with the chair until my head got sore.

That'll never happen no more.
That'll never happen no more.

Was in Chicago, winter and fall,
Woman got me to wear my overalls.
Got broke, wasn't my fault,
Used to eatin' pork chops, been eatin' salt.

I met a woman with a (big mean) smile.
Big fat mouth, neat parlored hair.
She pulled a gun and took my dollar,
Didn't even holler and I didn't get sore.

That'll never happen no more.
That'll never happen no more.

That'll never happen no more.
That'll never happen to me no more.

Brian

I wrote new words to Blind Blake's tune:

I went to town just the other day,
I met an old friend along the way,
She said, man can you come over tonight,
I said, my wife is busy but it'd be all right,
Well that'll never happen no more, that'll never happen no more.

I got over there about a quarter to eight,
She was dressed for bed, I said I hope I'm not late,
She said no sir, man, you're right on time,
Take your shoes off and open that wine,
Well that'll....

I said I've never really done this before
She said when we're done, we'll do it some more
My head was spinning, it was starting to ring,
When the doorbell did the same damn thing,
Well that'll...

There stood my wife looking angry and mean
She called my old friend something obscene,
Grabbed me by the nose and away we did go,
No shoes on my feet, I stubbed my big toe,
Well that'll...

She took me home; we had a big fight,
She did forgive me; we were doing all right,
I stubbed my other toe, getting into bed,
But it felt much better; you heard what I said,
Well that'll never....
