(I might have the name wrong since all I've is someone's take-off of the original.) Thanks. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Blind Willie McTell - 'That'll never From: Stewie Date: 19 Mar 00 - 02:50 AM The song title is 'That will never happen no more'. It's on 'Last Session' on Prestige/Fantasy. The album has been reissued on CD and should be fairly easy to obtain. --Stewie.

Subject: Lyr Add: THAT'LL NEVER HAPPEN NO MORE From: ddw Date: 19 Mar 00 - 05:26 PM I've been doing this song for years, but the version I learned was from Dave Von Ronk. Always tho't it was a BW McTell tune. My memory's been know to be pretty fallable, but the words as I remember them are:
I met a girl in a caboret Verbal scatting thru a verse.
I went to a party the other night CHORUS: instrumental break
Lived in Chicago in the winter and fall CHORUS: As I said, my memory isn't the best anymore, so maybe somebody has a better version of this. It's a great song, tho'. cheers david |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Blind Willie McTell - 'That'll never From: Murray MacLeod Date: 20 Mar 00 - 06:23 AM I have always known this as a Blind Blake tune, Are y'all sure McTell recorded it? Eddy Walker from Darlington also sings a great version of this song. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Blind Willie McTell - 'That'll never From: Brian Hoskin Date: 20 Mar 00 - 07:54 AM I haven't come across the McTell version, but Blake (1927 Pm 12497) uses a couple of different verses to the ones David has typed out, so they probably are from McTell. Brian |

Subject: Lyr Add: THAT'LL NEVER HAPPEN NO MORE From: Stewie Date: 20 Mar 00 - 07:08 PM From a quick look at Goodrich and Dixon, McTell made no pre-war recordings of 'That'll never happen no more'. I have not heard the Blind Blake recording but, since he died in the early 1930s, if there was any influence it must have been from Blake to McTell. McTell's recording on 'Last Session' is quite short - only 2 verses. This is what I can decipher: Spoken intro: 'That'll never happen no more'? That's another one of my little old original jives. See I, I figured that out in Chicago - sometime I use Atlanta, sometime I don't.
Met the gal at the caberet
Went to Chicago winter and fall Play it boy (instrumental) That'll never happen to me no more (2) --Stewie.

Subject: Lyr Add: THAT'LL NEVER HAPPEN NO MORE From: Brian Hoskin Date: 21 Mar 00 - 06:18 AM The McTell version Stewie has posted looks to be pretty close to the Blake version:
I met a girl at the caberet
Broke my nose, an' split my chin.
That'll never happen no more.
Was in Chicago, winter and fall,
I met a woman with a (big mean) smile.
That'll never happen no more.
That'll never happen no more. Brian |

Subject: Lyr Add: THAT'LL NEVER HAPPEN NO MORE From: GUEST,Brad Sondahl Date: 23 Mar 00 - 10:04 AM I wrote new words to Blind Blake's tune:
I went to town just the other day,
I got over there about a quarter to eight,
I said I've never really done this before
There stood my wife looking angry and mean
She took me home; we had a big fight, Copyright Brad Sondahl, free to use with accreditation. |
