Anybody have this song in a Stamps-Baxter hymnal or any hymnal, for that matter? I wonder if Stamps-Baxter tends to quash the works of songwriters who leave the fold...

I am looking for the copyright holder and date for "Give Me Just A Little More Time" by Albert E. Brumley. It was recorded by E.C. Ball in 1972, but I do not have a copy of that record. I have a Finest Kind recording of the song, but the author and copyright holder are not attributed there.

Does anyone know? Does anyone have a recording of the song? Can you check the liner notes to see if there's any copyright information? If you can find anything, I would greatly appreciate it if you can contact me at Mike@MikeAgranoff.com.

Many thanks.

e-mail sent to Mike Agranoff. -Joe Offer-

Thanks, 999. I changed the thread title and my lyrics entry to reflect the songwriter attribution.
I had known that Brumley wrote songs for Stamps-Baxter before going off on his own.

Hi, 999 -
This is the response I got:

This song is owned by Stamps Baxter Music.

    Here is their contact information:

This is the first time I've seen the song attributed to Alfred E. Brumley. I have all the songbooks Brumley's publishing house had for sale a few years ago, and I couldn't find the song in any of them. It's also not in the Brumley Song Catalog, which makes it doubtful to me that Brumley wrote it. On the other hand I found something that said the song was written by Brumley, copyright 1958 by Stamps-Baxter. Maybe Brumley wrote it before he started self-publishing.

I gather from Internet sources that the Marty Stuart recording of the song attributed it to Brumley. I see that the Wiregrass Sacred Harp Singers also attributed it to Brumley.

"Lord, Give Me Just A Little Bit More Time"

Written by Albert E. Brumley

I'm busy every day as I travel on my way
to that city far beyond the sky
And there is not a doubt,
that time is running out
As harvest time is drawing nigh
Lord I need a little time
To gather in the grain
Before I leave this world behind
I'm ready when you call me
But give me just a little more time

Lord, give me just a little more time
Give me just a little more time
So many precious souls are lost in sin
So many may be left behind
I gotta lot of things that I, I need to do
Before I leave this world behind
I'm ready when you call me
But give me just a little more time

Well I need a little time to labor for my Lord
Before the final judgment day
And I need a little time, to preach the Holy Word
To the sinner man along life's way
Every moment that I have to tarry here below
I'll try to make my lamp to shine
I'm ready when you call me
But give me just a little more time

Well, give me just a little more time
Give me just a little more time
So many precious souls are lost in sin
So many may be left behind
I gotta lot of things that I, I need to do
Before I leave this world behind
I'm ready when you call me
But give me just a little more time

Lord, give me just a little more time
Give me just a little more time
So many precious souls are lost in sin
So many may be left behind
I gotta lot of things that I, I need to do
Before I leave this world behind
I'm ready when you call me
Give me just a little more time
I'm ready when you call me, but give me just a little more time

Allmusic.com lists only 2 recordings of the Brumley song LORD, GIVE ME JUST A LITTLE MORE TIME. One is by Marty Stuart on "Souls' Chapel" (2005)—the same album the Billboard article was about—and one by the Wiregrass Sacred Harp Singers on "Desire for Piety: Songs from B. F. White Sacred Harp" (1997). The latter is more in the nature of a field recording, not a polished performance.

Certainly other recordings have been made, but they are probably all out of print.

An article in Billboard, Sept 3, 2005, mentions this song, giving the title as LORD, GIVE ME JUST A LITTLE MORE TIME, and attributing it to Albert E. Brumley. It is also attributed to him at Repertoire.BMI.com.

The word "Lord" will certainly help distinguish this song from the popular R&B song, GIVE ME JUST A LITTLE MORE TIME, written by Edith Wayne and Ronald Dunbar, and recorded by The Chairmen of the Board in 1970, Kylie Minogue in 1991.

I might get some time off in August. Anything going on in MV that might be interesting, in August?

I learned it from Drew Smith and Bob Woodcock, both fine autoharp players (as is Ms. Harpgirl!) and they both got itfrom EC and Orna Ball. Woodcock likes to sing the answerback as:
I'm ready (ready ready) when you call me Lord

The song has always reminded me of that passage in Robert Heinlein's Stranger in a Strange Land where the Fosterite church announces "Brother ____. Your prayers have been accepted and you will be Going to Heaven tomorrow morning at 8 AM! Going away party to start at midnight. Funeral at 9 AM tomorrow!"
"everybody wants to go to Heaven but nobody wants to die"

...and , you know, E.C might not have sung it the same way every time. I have heard performers asked why they did a song differently in a concert than I heard it on their record, and the answer was usually "..well, ummm..I guess my memory is fallible"...or "I sort of changed my mind"

It is nice to 'know' how it really was, but sometimes it just feels better another way...

About the THAT, actually I hear it on E. C. Ball, not on Finest Kind.

Oh, and here's a quote for the almighty keeper of the edit button: "Joe, you're right, Finest Kind says a-drawing, but E.C. Ball doesn't and I think since they got the words from him, he wins." - Rita Ferrara

Seriously, that would be one of the minor things that really don't matter much one way or the other. I think one could sing it either way without bringing the folk police down on you, claiming the E. C. Ball version of "That ain't the way Earl done it!"

Idle aside/semi-useless fact for the day: E. C. Ball's first name is Estil, don't think that has been mentioned yet.

I agree that it sounds like "Lord, I need a little time to gather in the grain." It is not as important, but I also think it is "I've got a lot of things THAT I need to do." What she says about the chorus seems right, too. I knew they were doing something like that, but didn't even attempt to transcribe it. Now if Arkie comes up with an author and maybe a date from Dr. Bill, I'd say we're done. You're right, it was fun. But then, that is what Mudcat is supposed to be all about.

Hi. Our ISP was misbehaving last night. Bill asked me to listen to the record but I don't guess he got to post my guesses, so to speak, because Erols kept going down.

For what it's worth, I agree with almost everything above, but have a couple suggestions. Joe sent the Finest Kind recording (it's great, Joe!). The version you guys put together is almost exactly what I think E.C. Ball is saying, it's closerthan Finest Kind's version.

Just two suggestions (feel free to disregard):

Instead of "Gonna need a little time to gather in the grain," I think Ball is saying, "Lord, I need a little time to gather in the grain." I listed several times and keep coming up with that. I like it better, anyway.

Second, in the chorus, the lead sings
"I'm rea----dy when you call--- me,"
(the dashes just indicate that he's holding the note.)

At the same time, the other singers are saying
"I'm ready any time when you call me, Lord,"
So I think of the shorter version as the "real" words, whatever that means.

Every place where Finest Kind and Ball disagree, you guys have Ball's version which is the original. This was so much fun that I've made up my mind to learn the song. It's sure a great song.

- Rita Ferrara

GIVE ME JUST A LITTLE MORE TIME
(Albert E. Brumley)
as recorded by E. C. Ball and Orna Ball, 1972

I'm busy every day as I travel on my way
To the city far beyond the sky
And there is not a doubt that time is running out
And the harvest time is drawing nigh

Gonna need a little time to gather in the grain
Before I leave this world behind
I'm ready any time when you call me, Lord
But give me just a little more time

Give me just a little more time,
Give me just a little more time
So many precious souls are lost in sin
So many may be left behind

I've got a lot of things I need to do
Before I leave this earthly clime
I'm ready any time when you call me, Lord
But give me just a little more time

I need a little time to labor for my Lord
Before the final judgment day
I need a little time to preach the holy word
To the sinner man along life's way

Every moment that I have to tarry here below
I will try to make my lamp to shine
I'm ready when you call me, Lord,
But give me just a little more time

Give me just a little more time, Lord
Give me just a little more time
So many precious souls are lost in sin
So many may be left behind

I've got a lot of things I need to do
Before I leave this earthly clime
I'm ready any time when you call me, Lord

I cast a vote for "And my harvest home is drawing nigh", but that is only speculation and may just muddy the waters a bit more. Will check with my friend, Dr. Bill, if he ever shows up for work. Dale, you must have spent hours figuring out the words. That's my favorite track on the recording, but it's nice knowing what they are actually saying.

I think we have it down to just one missing word, so I will post what I have, and let Joe fix it if we ever figure it out! I would have waited, but I am going to be out of town all day. Joe hears dizzy and I hear kinda for the ????????, but I don't think either is right. It is a collaborative effort gleaned from the E C and Orna Ball recording and from the Finest Kind, who credit the Balls for their version. Maybe they just mumble because they couldn't figure it out either! Both versions are recommended. Thanks, Joe.

GIVE ME JUST A LITTLE MORE TIME
as recorded by E. C. Ball and Orna Ball, 1972
authorship uncredited

I'm busy every day as I travel on my way
To the city far beyond the sky
And there is not a doubt that time is running out
And my heart is ?????????? drawing nigh

Gonna need a little time to gather in the grain
Before I leave this world behind
I'm ready any time when you call me, Lord
But give me just a little more time

Give me just a little more time, Lord
Give me just a little more time
So many precious souls are lost in sin
So many may be left behind

I've got a lot of things I need to do
Before I leave this earthly clime
I'm ready any time when you call me, Lord
But give me just a little more time

I need a little time to labor for my Lord
Before the final judgment day
I need a little time to preach the holy word
To the sinner man along life's way

Every moment that I have to tarry here below
I will try to make my lamp to shine
I'm ready when you call me, Lord
But give me just a little more time

Give me just a little more time, Lord
Give me just a little more time
So many precious souls are lost in sin
So many may be left behind

I've got a lot of things I need to do
Before I leave this earthly clime
I'm ready any time when you call me, Lord
But give me just a little more time

Ran into some rough spots, so called out some help. Will post after I hear from them! Powerful song, though. Thanks for making me get the CD out ~~ hadn't listened to it in months, but it is always worth another listen. (mostly recorded in 1972, not 1975)

OK, I got it ~~ you finally gave me enough to dredge it up from the depths of my mind ~~ E C and Orna Ball on Rounder 11577, 1996. (recorded in 1975, but sounds like it was 30 or so years before that)

Lyrics after the basketball game, so if this tunes anyone else in on it, I won't mind if you beat me to it.

Yup, it is an old gospel thing. Perhaps Wade Mainer, or similar. I think I heard Dillon Bustin do it at a party a long while back. Been struggling with a very sick parent and the chorus just keeps ringing in my ears. Chorus is something like:

Give me just a little more time lord, Give just a little more time, , Got a lotta things that I want to do, Before I leave this world behind, I'm ready when you call me lord, But give me just a little more time.

That's what I was thinking, too, Bill. Guess we will have to wait until Tom gives us more to go on.

Would this be the same classic "Give Me Just a Little More Time" by soul/beach music group Chairmen of The Board?

Can anyone help me find the lyrics to "Give Just a Little More Time"? Any info about the song & author would help too.

Thanks, -Tom Smith
