Dear Guest (who hopefully will return with a name),

It takes a very big hearted man or woman to admit when they're wrong AND admit it in a very public place like the Mudcat. Cudos to you, and be assured that we will welcome you into the Mudcat family with open arms (heck, I think all the folks here already have) when you return with a name. As for The Beanster -- well, I think you can understand -- and be assured that we will try to answer your questions as soon as you let us know what they were. Probably all of us have had threads fall off the board now and again without a response -- that's one of the added perks of membership -- you can trace your threads and refresh them with a minimum of hassle if you don't get an answer the first time.

Again, welcome to the Mudcat and may all your threads be answered from now on!

-- Áine

I was wondering if "Guest" would ever come back and I had my doubts.

(I luv yous guys ['Catters--and this means regulars, newbies and civil guests] and your politeness to the aforementioned guest is admirable and mind boggling to me, but allow me to just take a moment to say what I really think. For those of you who wish to, you may look away). lol

Guest,

You posted a rude, whiney message up there, dripping with Attitude and immaturity. Despite your juvenile approach (to what may even be a legitimate gripe), everyone here has been more than polite and helpful to you. It's obvious to almost everyone who reads these threads that these folks are generous with all they have to offer (their time, knowledge, thoughtfulness, support, patience, etc.) Obviously, I am p...d off at your little vitriolic outburst and despite my first (restrained) posting up there, I want to say that the group here does not deserve to be spoken to in that manner and I think you were way out of line.

(Okay, 'Catters--it's safe to read on, now).

And Guest, you get more flies with honey than with vinegar.

What's the matter with me? Ask my Mom...she's usually willing to let me know. : )
Anyway, as a high school student, I consider myself something of an expert on cliques. I am of the opinion that there is a difference between groups of friends and cliques. Cliques exist in order to exclude others and promote a sense of superiority. I have never noticed anything of the kind on the 'cat (except, of course, for the infamous Underground Mudcat). Mudcat tends to have lots of relationships formed, but I don't think it's cliquey at all. If you want to see cliques, visit a high school cafeteria! : )

Well, I've been here for some time now and have had several threads not replied to....it happens.

I sum it up as the Mudcatters not being willing to say they don't know the "answer"...besides, why muddy the thread with "I don't know, but I wanted you to know I read your thread."....???

Visiting back and "refreshing" the threads is a good way to keep them active over a period of time....even refreshing it a month later can result in an answer.....

Haven't read the "Newcomer's guide" threads (since I can't think of the actual thread titles)....if there isn't already, perhaps there should be a list of "helpful hints" to posting threads....

Well, GUEST, That takes care of that. 'Clique', 'Group', 'Family','Clan' whatever.... I found the Mudcat last week and my first reaction was "I'm Home!!!" I'm looking forward to spending too much time with this bunch of hooligans and not having to drive. I find the forum interesting to read and have no doubt that there are plenty of repeated questions but the responses seem to always be courteous and friendly. After browsing for a few days and responding to a few threads, I joined and have quickly figured out some of the navigational strategies of the site. And I'm quite new to the computer and the internet. Thanks to all the regulars out there that make this site what it is. I've been recommeding it highly to my musical friends. Dan

Anything where people share any kind of common interest or ideals....is a clique.

So what?...and who really gives a crap?

Humans have an annoying preponderance to categorize and define every little single little nuance of life...so that in some feeble way, they can further define their reasons for existence...and feel more secure about their surroundings.

Such is the nature of mankind.

Pain in the ass, and time better spent, practising an instrument.

Actually Guest (and I am going to be serious here) show me ANY group of people that does not form "insider" groups and I will eat my hat. Saw a lot of the Pope on the tube this week and he was always surrounded by his "advisors". They sure aren't little parish priests from Peoria..they're a powerful "insider" group.

When famous rock bands go on tour, you bet there's an "insider" group with them.

There are cliques in the stock market, sports world, fashion industry, certainly politics, and any other "group you can name.

But one of the things I love about folk music is that ANYONE can be a part of it if they want to. The only criteria are:

Real interest in the music, the performers and the performance.

A little bit of perseverance.

You could re-appear right now, (with a name) and by golly, you'll be part of us. Don't believe me? Try it.

Rick

If you want a lot of responce, couch your question in political terms, and in the cross fire, you may get an answer. Only kidding, before this gets out of hand! No, I agree, that my posts that did not go answered, were generally because I made to obscure a title. We realy are not cliquish at all, to my experience, unless you were asking for the words to the Horst Wessel song, or something, but even that, I think would get SOME kind of responce. Get back to us, and accept our appologies if our HUGE resource of abstract knowlege was not taped or too challenged.

Cool thing about cyber-talk is most of the traditional human senses get left out of the arena...I can't smell your breath...hear your voice...taste your scent...see your face...ya know what I mean? While I don't think the Guest necessarily phrased the comment in the best way possible (who among us ALWAYS does that anyway?)I think there is some justification for the remark. I made a quick check of 30 days worth of posts, and found at least 51 requests that were clearly marked, but received not a single response. There were six in the most recent 24 hour period (before the crash) so I would imagine that since that was a much higher percentage, some of those threads people just had not gotten to yet or were still thinking about. This was a hurried check, but I saw at least one that I could have answered, and another that I could have investigated and likely found. No doubt others could do the same.

Unfortunately, it is a whole lot easier to prattle on mindlessly (yes, we all do it, some more than others) than to do a thorough research project, which may or may not be appreciated. And yes, sometimes the information requested is right there at hand FOR THOSE WHO KNOW HOW TO LOOK. Some people just have not yet developed those skills yet, though as some suggest, there are others who just want someone else to do it for them. I'd like to think that contingent is in a distinct minority though.

So maybe what I want to say is that the "regulars" or whatever term you want to use, should try to do a better collective job of at least attempting to help out those who request lyrics by at least pointing them in the right directions. It is no good saying, "Oh, NOOOOO, not another request for (fill in your most irritating request here)." While it may be the 3rdh, 8th or 10th time you've seen it, just remember that it is probably the FIRST time that particular person has asked and it may well be their first week on the internet, so they are still unaware of the wealth of information that is out there FOR THOSE WHO KNOW HOW TO FIND IT.

I think I have said all I have on my mind for the moment. Excuse me while I think a bit more about the request for I'm In Love With Two, that's one I should know, but just can't quite place.

Let me just add that there aren't any "you people" here -- just a bunch of individuals trying to help each other out. A decent regard for the voluntary and human nature of this environment would be adviseable. Sorry you got upset but give "us" a break and repost your question in as clear a way as you can, and see if improving your communication skills might not be part of the solution.

What was it you wanted to know?

Well, it's interesting that "Guest" has received some very informative answers, but hasn't come back to join in the dialogue, perhaps to say "but I tried that" or "oh, I didn't realize that". I don't answer a lot of querys because I'm not that knowledgable. And it is very true that the name of the thread has a lot to do with whether or not I click on it! So Guest, did you get any help with this thread? Let us know! Margo

Well, GUEST. There's a lot wrong with me, I'm musically, vocally and comically challenged for starters.
However, though I am amazed at the breadth of knowledge here at the 'Cat, not all my requests have been answered, I've even ended up sometimes finding the info' elsewhere and posting it here for the benefit of everyone else.
You win some, you lose some, it doesn't matter whether you're a GUEST or not but whether the request is clear and there's someone out there who can answer it and happens to see it.
Try "refresh"-ing it, not everyone has time to look at every thread or to look every day.
If you personalise your thread with a name or a pseudonym you might get drawn into things, Praise might even welcome you in verse!

In answer to BigRed's comment about the life span of a thread and them getting lost, I would imagine that most of us only view one days posts (although more can be viewed by changing the "Age") and I for one sometimes simply miss some without even considering whether I can contribute to the thread. Sometimes if a thread appears to have been missed, it is worth a second try. The standard practice is to make a second post to the original thread which says "refresh" - this will bring it back to the top of the list.

Joe Offer is currently working on a Mudcat FAQ thread. Some of the points raised here are already contained in that thread. It might be worth a read.

Sometimes a question doesn't get answered, maybe because it's not expressed very clearly, or the thread-title is too general ("NEED HELP BADLY" turns up a good bit; lots of people don't bother looking at those) or because nobody knows the answer!   If your thread disappears, you can always find it again, either by changing the "Age" filter on the main Forum page to a longer time-period and pressing the "refresh" button, or by searching for your thread title in the "Quick Links" box at the top of the page.  You can then bring it back to the top of the list by adding a new message to it.  There may be answers on it by the time you find it again.

It's always a good idea to make the nature of your question as clear as possible in your thread-title, and to provide as much background information as you can: a lot of people recently have been asking for "the lyrics" for entire albums, without being able to say for sure who recorded them and what they were called.  That's a little too much to ask of people who come here to share what they know -or can find out- in their spare time, and (unless they're logging on from work) at their own expense.

It isn't a "clique" thing (or I wouldn't be here), but it usually takes a little while to work out how to get the best results from a place like this.  You might find it useful to have a look at the experimental FAQ that's being discussed at the moment:  click here.

If I've been telling you stuff that you know already, I apologise; "Guest" doesn't tell us much, though.  If you sign your name, people will have a better idea whether or not they've seen your question(s). Don't give up.

Malcolm

What's the matter with "us people" is that we ARE... just people. This is not folkie heaven. It's earth. We're not any dumber than you are, Guest, we just do the best we can most every day. Like I am sure you do.

And it's just a bunch of earth people doing The Schmielzo Polka. C'mon and dance with us! And you don't even have to apologize-- since you are anonymous, you can give yourself a name and start right over with some of the excellent suggestions above!

I'm sorry you've been feeling left out. I just found Mudcat tonight and have been enjoying reading the threads a lot. There seems to be no commitment to joining, so I joined, posted a question, and while I haven't gotten a large response yet, I have gotten one helpful hint. Maybe the answer to your question is unknown here... have you tried broadening or narrowing the topic to try and get more responses?

Eluned

"Discoverd Mudcat about a month ago and immediately joined and started a thread on "lesser known folk groups". I had over 50 resposones even though I was brand new. It was great! (and most helpful and educational) Maybe your posts are to difficult, to sketchy, about to obscure a subject, repetitive of other recent threads, do not strike a responsive chord with "folkies", or just at the wrong time. A thread seems to last only a day or two so if you do not hit the right people (those interested in your thread) on those one or two days, it simply gets lost. Hang in there! Check out the recent threads about newbies and you will gain a lot of info on how to use Mudcat to its fullest. Also, JOIN! Its got to be one of the best deals on the web.
