Congratulations are in order for Young Barky, who last night secured the prestigious First Trumpet chair in San Diego's city-wide Honor Band, in the elite Woodwind Ensemble group. You may be able to catch a piece of her trumpet improv backing up "The Rose" on the Radio tonight, Max willing. She's damn good, and she's rightfully pleased with herself for landing first chair. Well done, mi amorcita! We're soooo proud of ya!

While we join you in saluting Barky's accomplishment, let us hope that this thread is not going to set a precedent, where Mudcatter's are encouraged to start bragging publicly about all of their children's accomplishments.

Nothing is more annoying or initimidating in real life when one encounters this situation with friends who just can't shut up about their kids, and the same should hold true here.

Otherwise this place will sink to an even lower LOW.

Well, pal, maybe you aren't being sensitive to the group dynamics involved. I understand that group dynamics may not be within your sense of realities, unless you hang out at a body-piercing bar somewhere. I thought carefully about the issue you raise, because as I rule I only brag about Barky to people I have carefully qualified as both breathing and within earshot. But for those of us who have a group here, Barky is certainly part of it, representing the arrival of the young at the door of our folk-music world, and I concluded it was within common decency to celebrate it a little.

I have a niece who is in China getting her doctorate degree. Wanna see her picture? And my nephew is about to start walking, and my sister sent me a JPEG. Gimme yer email address, you effing bore, and I'll give you bragging...I think I have some old tintypes of ancestors who were very distinguished, I could scan for you...

Amos, its OK, really. That was just a sour fart in a windstorm. Bragging on kids is good. (It embarrasses them, which is really good.)

Did I mention my daughter Emily's semi-award-winning radio play was produced on community radio in boondocks of Killaloe Ontario? (No? You're kidding, I tell everybody...Emily is getting really sick of hearing about it in fact.) They even burned it onto a CD and mailed it to her. At the same time I was waiting to get my own one-off CD master of some recording done a few years ago--but hers came first. Frosted my ass, I'll tell ya.

Well done, Barky girl and I hope we are in for Jeremiah Clarke if you have a mic that can cope...as for friend Spaw, You said it Cuz, there seems to be a few people "the silent minority" (If only they remained so) who can't seem to cope with any kind of show of emotion or feeling between friends, well tough on them, and it is, but If you can not share the highs and lows with friends maybe it is your deficiency and loss not theirs and constantly bitching that others are departing from the "spirit" of the 'cat is spurious and trivial, as well as presumptious on their part since how do they know what catters want? Straw poll , opinion, guess work, have they conducted a survey? I reckon they are entitled to their view but that is all, and this "people say... " drivel should be treated with the contempt it deserves, and people who use these statements can only get away with them by the rest of us letting them go unchallenged, Come on Spaw if you try you CAN be that contemptuous!!!! Any way many congrats Barky and a hug from someone who ISN'T ashamed of showing feelings of happiness for a friend.

Thank you all for your kind words! It was actually rather funny last night. I was walking down the row where the trumpets were sitting, and I was looking for the folder with my name on it, and when I got to the very end of the row, I almost started crying tears of sadness, because there was my folder. This lasted about five seconds until I sat down. Then I actually examined the folder, and there, right next to my name, were the numbers 1-1, which signifies first chair, first part. I was so happy, I wish y'all could have seen the grin on my face!

The really funny thing is that the guy who's second chair was principal last year, so he basically hates me. It's pretty funny.... I guess it's one of those "you have to be there" things, but he's really bitter, and even spoke harshly to the conductor.
