Any ideas where I can find the lyrics for "The Nellie J. Banks", and also for "Tales of the Phantom Ship" or titles I might try looking under?

Thanks

Subject: Lyr Add: THE NELLIE J. BANKS (from Jar o' Plenty)
From: Bob Landry
Date: 19 Jun 97 - 08:45 PM

Bill, I like your taste in music. I've been looking in DT and a few other places for these lyrics to try and save myself some time but your post yesterday prompted me to transcribe the lyrics from a tape I have at home. I think it's fairly accurate except maybe the spelling of the captain's name. I also managed to work out most f the chords starting with Em. If I figure out the rest, I'll post them later. Enjoy, Bob
^^

THE NELLIE J. BANKS
Written by Lennie Gallant
Recorded by Jar o' Plenty

She left St-Pierre on the tenth of May, Prince Edward Island bound.
For the winter's done and there's very little rum in the harbours and the towns.
And the fishermen watch for the dirty sail as they trawl on Tracadie Bay.
And they give a great shout when they finally pick her out "Nellie Banks is on her way!"

There's Captain Millington at the helm, he comes from Newfoundland.
With a bottle of brandy always on the deck, and an extra case on hand.
He's drunk and he has a leeward stance, but he sails the schooner true.
And the government cutters simply fall astern, when he shows what the Banks can do.

Chorus:
There's rum in the holds of the Nellie J. Banks, Prince Edward Island Bound.
Late in the night when the moon don't shine, you'll find her off Georgetown.

Well the government cutters the hugged the shore with a glass upon rum row.
For they know the Nellie Banks is out upon the bay, and the runner is sure to show.
And Millington keeps her four miles out, for the boundary it is free.
But late at night when the cutter's out of sight, she slips into a lee.

Chorus:
There's rum in the holds of the Nellie J. Banks, Prince Edward Island Bound
Late in the night when the moon don't shine, you'll find her off Georgetown

On an August night in the pale moonlight, with the Banks off Short point shore
A shot rang out and a man began to shout, "Heave to, or we'll fire more!"
And the morning light saw a terrible sight, the Banks was towed away.
No more will the Nellie J Banks run rum, no more will the fishermen say.

Chorus:
"There's rum in the holds of the Nellie J. Banks, Prince Edward Island Bound.
Late in the night when the moon don't shine, you'll find her off Georgetown.
Yes, there's rum in the holds of the Nellie J. Banks, we saw her sail today.
You'll find her on the night when the moon don't shine, three miles off Tracadie Bay."

Ooops, missed a couple of breaks and I was getting so cocky

Well the government cutters the hugged the shore with a glass upon rum row.
For they know the Nellie Banks is out upon the bay, and the runner is sure to show.
And Millington keeps her four miles out, for the boundary it is free.
But late at night when the cutter's out of sight, she slips into a lee.

I believe both are by Lennie Gallant from Rustico PEI. Evans and Doherty have the Nellie J. Banks on their latest CD that they did with Liam Clancy.

Frank is right, both songs are written by Lennie Gallant, and Jar O'Comfort also does a great job on The Nellie J. Banks

Lennie's web site is

however I don't think either of the songs have the lyrics posted.

Was going through the lyrics. It looks like it's slightly different than what I have:

THE NELLIE J. BANKS
Lennie Gallant

Chorus
There's rum in the hold of the Nellie J. Banks
Prince Edward Island bound
Late on a night when the moon shines bright
You can find her off Georgetown

1
She left St. Pierre on the tenth of May
Prince Edward Island bound
For the winter's done and there's very little rum
In the harbours and the towns;
And the fishermen watch for the dirty sail
As they trawl on Tracadie Bay,
And they give a great shout when they finally figure out,
Nellie Banks is on her way.

2
There's Captain Milligan at the helm,
He comes from Newfoundland
With a bottle of brandy always on the deck,
And an extra case in hand;
He's drunk but he holds a leeward stance,
As he sails the schooner through;
And the government cutters quickly follow astern
When he shows what the Banks can do.
3
Well, the government cutters hug the shore,
With a glass upon rum row,
For they know the Nellie Banks is over on the bay
And a runner is sure to show
And Milligan keeps her four miles out
Though the boundary it is three;
But late at night when the cutter's out of sight
She slips into a lee- 4
On an August night in the pale moonlight
With the Banks of Short Pt. Shore
A shot rang out and a voice began to shout,
"Heave to, or we'll fire more"
And the morning light saw a terrible sight
As the Banks was pulled away
No more will the NJ Banks run rum
No more will the fishermen say

^^
TALES OF THE PHANTOM SHIP
Lennie Gallant

On a night as black as a raven’s feather
Thunder cracks like a snap of leather
And the wind whips through the black spruce on the shore.
Waves are pounding the beaches harder
As the last of the fishermen reach safe harbour
And the wind turns cold, cuts to the core.

Out on the wide Northumberland Strait
A ball of fire skips over the waves
And those who've seen it can't believe their eyes.
There's a burst of flame and a flash of light
And there on the tide is a frightening sight
As a tall ship all aflame lights up the sky.

Tales of the phantom ship, from truck to keel in flames.
She sails the wide Northumberland Strait. No one knows her name.
Tales of the phantom ship. It's a ship of fire they cry.
Hard against the wind she sails. No one can say why.

They say she's a three-masted square-rigger
Four hundred tons or maybe bigger
With fire on every rope and spar and sail.
Out of the east though the wind blows west
She ploughs the strait on an unknown quest
Cutting through the waves with the strength of a full-force gale.

Of why she appears there's none who know
Some say it's nothing but a moonlight glow
But those who've seen her swear they tell no lies.
They tell how her bow suddenly drops down
And into the depths of the strait she's bound
And the wind goes wild with wailing chilling cries.

Tales of the phantom ship, from truck to keel in flames
She sails the wide Northumberland Strait. No one knows her name
Tales of the Phantom ship. It's a ship of fire they cry
Hard against the wind she sails. No one can say why.

Some say she's an immigrant ship of old
Highland Scots whose land was stolen
Lost at sea while seeking the new land,
Or a ghostly American privateer
Who plundered innocent harbours here
Cursed to sail the strait, forever damned.

But an old timer sang a song to me -
Six hundred Acadians drowned at sea
Deported long ago from St. John's Isle,
He says they sail this choppy strait,
Through time and tide they navigate,
Searching for the means to end their long exile.

Tales of the Phantom ship, from truck to keel in flames
She sails the wide Northumberland Strait. No on knows her name.
She sails the wide Northumberland Strait. When will she sail again?

enjoy!

Jar O'Comfort did a nice version of Lennie Gallants song. I don't think the group is together anymore but Gordon Belsher is still very active in singing/recording and playing with a great P.E.I fiddler Cynthia MacLeod.
He is also nominated for an up coming Roots Award at the ECMA.

May I suggest Shawn that you contact Lennie Gallant and explain your story to him. I'm sure he would appreciate it.
A short story from my side of the family.
A Canadian Folklore group called "Heart Rouge" recorded a tragic (in song)story of a little girl lost and perished in a blizzard up around Tignish Prince Edward Island. I believe the actual place was called Palmer Road. Anyway, Mum was was given this c/d as a gift and upon hearing the story she immediately said it was not true because this little girl was found and brought in the house by so and so. I know because I was a little girl of about five. Mum passed away two years ago at 92.

By the way Shawn, Gordon Belsher does your great grand father justice as he sings the song with the correct last name mentioned.
