I've tried to find the lyrics to these two Carter Family songs. I've transcribed most of the lyrics, but there are just a few words that I can't understand. I am a big Carter Family fan; I love to sit and sing them with my grandmother, and sometimes, it helps to have the lyrics. The words I cannot understand is where the blanks are.

Bury Me Under the Weeping Willow:

My heart is sad and I'm in sorrow
For the only one I love
When shall I see him oh no never
Till I meet him in Heaven above

Chorus:

Oh bury me under the weeping willow, yes
Under the weeping willow tree
So he may know where I am sleeping
And perhaps he will weep for me

They told me that he did not love me
I could not believe it was true
Until an angel softly whispered
He is proving untrue to you

Repeat Chorus

Tomorrow was our wedding day
But oh Lord, oh where is he
He's gone to seek him another bride
And he cares no more for me

Repeat Chorus

Oh bury me under the ________ _______
To prove my love to him
Tell him that I would die to save him
For his love I never could win Repeat Chorus

The Poor Orphan Child:

I hear a low, faint voice that says
Papa and mama's dead
And it comes from the poor orphan child
That must be clothed and fed
And it comes from the poor orphan child
That must be clothed and fed
And it comes from the poor orphan child
That must be clothed and fed

Chorus:
A.P.:
Reach 'em by the hand 'till they
Reach 'em by the hand Savior
Reach 'em by the hand 'till they
Reach 'em by the hand
Reach 'em by the hand 'till they
Reach 'em by the hand 'till they
All reach the glittering strand

Sara:
Savior, reach 'em by the hand
Savior, reach 'em by the hand
Savior, reach 'em by the hand
Till they all reach the glittering strand

They call the man his children now
Poor little boys and girls
Who once had mother's loving hands
To smooth their golden curls
Who once had mother's loving hands
To smooth their golden curls
Who once had mother's loving hands
To smooth their golden curls

Repeat Chorus

But now we see the wond'ring curls
Hang careless 'round their brow
They say to us my papa's dead
And I know mother now
They say to us my papa's dead
And I know mother now
They say to us my papa's dead
And I know mother now

Repeat Chorus

Oh Savior, every orphan bless
Wherever they may roam
Let _____ _____ ______ ______ ______ ______
___ bless the orphan home
Let _____ _____ ______ ______ ______ ______
___ bless the orphan home
Let _____ _____ ______ ______ ______ ______
___ bless the orphan home

Repeat Chorus

Also, if you think any of these lyrics are wrong, please voice your opinions. I am probably wrong. LOL

Thanks

Peter, the lyrics to Bury Me Beneath the Willow are in the DigiTrad data base. I just looked. And probably Weeping Willow too. I'm a big Carter Family family fan as well.

This is the missing part straight from a Carter Family Album of Smokey Mountain Ballads #3 I hear a low faint voice that says, papa and mama's dead,
It's coming from the orphan child that must be clothed and fed,
It's coming from the orphan child that must be clothed and fed,
it's coming from the orphan child that must be clothed and fed.

Chorus: Saviour lead them by the hand,
Saviour lead them by the hand,
Savior lead them by the hand,
till they reach that glittering strand

Oh now we see those wandering curls hang careless round their brow,
They say to us my papa's dead and I've no mother now
They say to us my papa's dead and I've no mother now,
They say to us my pap's dead and I've no mother now. Chorus

Think of the many children now, poor little boys and girls
Who once had mother's loving hands to smooth their golden curls,
Who once had mothers loving hands to smooth their golden curls,
Who once had mothers loving hands to smooth their golden curls. Chorus

O Saviour, every orphan bless where ever they may roam
Bless every hand that lends them aid and bless the orphan home,
Bless every hand that lends them aid and bless the orphan home
Bless every hand that lends them aid and bless the orphan home. Chorus

Thank you for those lyrics! I have listened over and over and never could figure it out. I am very glad I found this place too. As to Bury Me Beneath the Weeping Willow, there is just 2 words I can't get. Although the lyrics are listed here, there is a verse that the Carter Family sings that isn't there. Anyone know?

Straight from their songbook.

My heart is sad and I'm in sorrow for the only one I love,
When shall I see him? Oh, no, never till I meet him in heaven above.

Chorus: Oh, bury me under the weeping willow, yes, under the weeping willow tree,
So he will know where I am sleeping and perhaps he will weep for me.

They told me that he did not love me but I can't believe it's true,
Until an angel softly whispered he is proving untrue now to you. Chorus

Tomorrow was to be our wedding day but Lord, oh, where is he?
Oh, he has gone to seek another bride and he cares no more for me. Chorus

That's it. I can't believe I don't have a complete copy of that song on CD. Don't have the other one on any of my CD's. Guess I will have to get one with these two songs on it.

It's on their first reissue from Rounder, Anchored In Love. As of now, I don't have any 78's, but I ordered one from eBay: Bury Me Under the Weeping Willow. How would I get some of their songbooks? I've never seen one before. I do want to thank you for all the help; I have been looking for those few words to The Poor Orphan Child since last summer.

If anyone else knows the words that fit into this, I would appreciate it very much:

Oh bury me under the ____ ____ To prove my love to him Tell him that I would die to save him For his love I never could win

"Violets blue," I think it is, but it took a few listenings! Margaret

Ebay has a book listed every now and then. They usually go real high. Another suggestion is to go to the Carter Family web site. You can request a list of CD's and Souveniors. There are two song books listed. One is $10.00 The other is $20.00. Don't know what they are like because I haven't order one yet. The person you need to contact if Mrs. Flo Wolfe.
