Following is about a book I've had my eye on for some time (shall I be forced into amazon?). Seems like it might cover this kind of thing. Includes lyrics, music, background history.

Ev'Ry Time I Feel the Spirit : 101 Best-Loved Psalms, Gospel Hymns, and Spiritual Songs of the African-American Church by Gwendolyn Sims Warren

Dale--Thanks so much for reminding me about the Cyber Hymnal. I wrote to them last year about a tune I heard as the background music to Ken Burns' Lewis and Clark special. It was "Come Ye Sinners Poor and Needy" (in one of the Baptist hymnals) but to the tune of "Beach Spring." They said they couldn't post that version because of copyrights. Yuck!!!!! But today I searched a little and found a midi for the tune here. It's in Sacred Harp 1844, so I don't understand why it's so hard to find.

It seems that for a lot of these hymns, you need to go back to the hymn tune and search for that.

Wyowoman--Here's a link I picked up from Okiemockbird. < href="http://www.ccel.org/s/southern_harmony/sharm/sharm/">Southern Harmony And here's one from Escamillo Amazing Grace Midis

Don't ya just love Mudcat?

Mary

Thanks for this thread, all.

From the Cosmic Coincidence Control Center, this just in: Last night I was listening to a Joan Baez CD I bought some time ago to learn "Gracias a la Vida." I had focused so much on that song, which is the first on the CD, that I hadn't really gotten into the rest of the CD. It's all in Spanish and mostly really lovely (the exception being a recording of "De Colores," which I heard about every other day living for 16 years in New Mexico and am simply, personally sick of). But at the end of the CD was this wonderful version of "We Shall Not Be Moved," in Espanol.

I'd offer to send you the words but I don't think I could figure them all out. However, if that interests you, I will send you the info on the CD so you can order yourself one.

And Dale, thanks for that link. I shall bookmark immediately.

Best, WW

A few rambling additions:

Mary, I sent her an Email scan of the music from the hymnal I quoted above, a prized find at an antique store a couple of years ago ~~ not one of the little Stamps-Baxters but a full length softcover hymnal with 345 songs.

I would imagine it was the predecessor of Heavenly Highways, what I consider the definitive hymnal for songs of this type ~~ certainly when you consider that it is still in print. I found it at Barnes and Noble (but not Amazon) for $12.95, which I thought a bit high, but I see they have added a $5.00 Service Charge, which brings it back down into the range that I would expect it to be found in your local Bible/Religious Book Store.

The song was copyrighted 1939, the same as the year of publication for Favorite Songs And Hymns. For authorship, it said arr. and H. F. M. ~~ that would be Homer F. Morris, one of the compilers, along with W. W. Combs, and Virgil O. Stamps, and J. R. Baxter, Jr. themselves! It is obviously a lot older than that, but I can't find just how old at the moment.

I also checked at the Cyber Hymnal but was surprised to see that it was not included. "This site has over 2,100 Christian hymns and Gospel songs from many denominations. You'll find lyrics, scores, MIDI files, pictures, history, and more. This worship and teaching resource is provided as a public service." What I like about the Cyber Hymnal, is that it is constantly being improved and added to. Just check their Recent Additions, and you'll see that they added three songs on March 26 ~~ that's today!

Just thought I would add what I consider to be the two best sources for finding the old time hymns.

Look in music stores for African-American Spirituals. I found a simple version at this store. http://www.encoremusic.com I like this site/store because it has a search engine and usually lists the table of contents of the music books.

I looked at Levy Sheet Music and Duke Sheet Music (I think both are listed in the Mudcat Links), and couldn't find the song because I didn't know which decade to look in.

I found some chords for it here. I've seen it listed as "We Shall Not Be Moved," so maybe that would find something. Also in some hymnbooks, there is a one line melody in the psalter since it is Psalm 1.

Good luck.
Mary

That is something else I can supply. I have it in Favorite Songs And Hymns, Stamps-Baxter, 1939. I will send it in a bit, along with your other request!

Does anyone know where to get the sheet music for "I shall not be Moved"? I have looked everywhere I know and have not been able to find it. I think it is a very well known song can't figure why I can't find it on any lists.
